There are many lessons here, but the big one for photographers is, study filmmaking, even if you don't plan to shoot video. The lighting, the framing, the story...it's all there, and at a much higher and more developed level than any kind of photography class or books.
"Bored with local news"? For me, as a shooter for a decade with a small weekly in my 50s, it was the most satisfying jobs I have had in my life. I got to watch kids grow up, leave home, and come back home. I had the opportunity to really get to know my community and the first responders. Everything about being a small town photojournalist was challenging. In the end, the print industry died and I had to return to a previous career to pay the bills. But that time as a local photog was priceless.

99% of photographers dream to have just one photo that is legendary. Most shoot all their lives and never achieve the notoriety of the "Afgan Girl" photo, or it comes after they've passed on.
This is a fascinating interview of a great talent. I was a street photographer for years, mostly around Times Square but was not nearly as successful. I learned several ways of approaching people some similar to Mr. McCurrry. People actually approached me which surprised me. But i hate to travel.
This woman loves herself, and is desperate to get into the interview and interrupt, rather than letting the photographer tell his stories in his own far more interesting, less gushing way.
Steve is a legend and I love and am tremendously inspired by his work. That said, it’s unfortunate that even in 2023, the western gaze still dominates the photography world, and the discourse that comes out of the work.
Am I the only one who finds the interviewer annoying? She keeps interrupting needlessly with a phoney laugh. Why can't she let the subject fill silence.
Believe it or not, there was a time before the internet existed. Assuming you weren't returning with the film in person you asked someone you trusted to carry it back or even approached a member of a crew at an airport heading home. This was a simpler age and no one worried about being asked by a stranger to carry something onto an aircraft.
It is worse than you think. They are wearing lav mics. This means they blended in the ambient. Put his audio in the left channel. Put her audio in the right channel. And at some point said. Yes!

Not as interesting. Hence why a majority of photographers go to non Western countries to take photos of people. Even Henri C B said that after a while, he got bored of shooting the same looking people and that this was why he went to Africa.
McCurry is a DISGRACE for the photography world. All those photos have being photoshopped and edit to ad or remove elements, he also made a carrier while destroying the life of the Afghan girl.
Alexandra, I am just curious. How do you know this? Are you assuming or do you actually know from informed sources? Please inform me because I want to know.
It’s common record, just google fake photographer, and the name will come up. There are a lot of articles about it but reputable new sources. I’m baffle when people don’t know about it.
Joseph Thomas // He used his and her teachers power and authority to take pictures of her and traumatizing her in the process. In her culture especially at the time women weren't supposed to be in the same room as a man that is not family or some other authority figure, they can't remove their burkas, they can't look someone directly in the eyes and he selfishly violated all of that without considering her feelings or respecting her beliefs. He then used her likeness to gain money and fame without ever informing her or sharing the wealth he made off her photo. He also lied about her in the article he wrote where she's only mentioned twice. It was traumatizing for her then National Geographic did it to her again using the same photographer. She also believes (and is probably right) that the photo he took is the reason she was taken from her safe home that she loved and was brought back to the war torn country she was born in and flaunted like a show pony. She's been very vocal about the whole thing and how much she hated him. She was 10 in the original photo. He did not ask for permission from her father or anyone else to take the photo.

Yes. I look to TV and cinema to see how to see.
What a great interview! What a honour to interview Steve McCurry. He is my favourite all time photographer.
She keeps interrupting him though
Greatness is always preceded by an enduring commitment. What an inspiring man.

Steve McCurry must tire of telling the Afgan girl photo story. Every interviewer askes him to talk about it.
Look for the real story behind this picture, its absolutely disgusting.
Not true
You’ll always be remembered by one great photograph, if you’re that lucky
Don’t refuse that
Dude is disgusting. The Italian Govt just saved her in the fall of Afghanistan. He is a total colonialist.

Really nice interview. So glad that Steve feels happy, and it shows.
Take a note guys , the gear he use .... Nikon FM2 and Nikkor 105 mm Manual lens and film slide , and the quality? .... wow!
I have that 105mm with a D200 dreaming to take a photo have close to that

Great video, made me change my feelings on Steve McCurry. Thanks

Very nicely done. Thank you.
Great interview! Best of the series.
Great video put together! Much appreciated.

Stop interrupting.
The interviewer is boring, interrupts him all the time! She is nervous and doesn't stop talking.

I just curious how he sent his pictures in war zone on that time?
The place that no electricity, roads, and even internet.
He has shipped the films.
He has been known to sew the film into his clothes in order to smuggle it out of certain countries.
