"I want to be a force for good, in other words I know that there are forces of evil, forces that cause suffering to others and misery to the world, but I want to be an opposite force. I want to be the force with which to do good" . John Coltrane

wise words! I say be motivated by love, not romance, but pure love, the kind of love that babies have towards their parents and vs versa! Love is the most powerful force in the universe and causes darkness to flee!

Him and Art Blakey both. I remember one night at the Jazz Gallery when Blakey's Jazz Messengers (the great sextet) and Coltrane's quartet were appearing together, alternating sets, and at one point both groups joined forces for a couple of tunes. When it came to drum-solo time Art and Elvin went into orbit---too bad the set was never recorded, because those two put on a regular clinic! "Fantastic" is a gross understatement for what I saw and heard.

Years ago I saw an interview with Elvin Jones, when asked how he kept perfect time while being so active and innovative with his own improvisation while literally every other player was doing the same but especially the long complex improvisation of Coltraine and he said he constantly tapped out the time signature using the high hat symbol then demonstrated how he did it while playing insane rhythmic improvisation of his own. It was extraordinary, blew me away!

To Samuelklappper: This is a masterpiece , no doubt. It's funny that it was realeased 50 years after Coltrane s death, probably discovered by accident....To be honest Coltrane is too subtle for me, but this piece really grooves!!!!!
