- I've never really been a fan of the iCloud system for backing up my photos, so I didn't have photos from my phone backed. That was until I discovered Photoprism and Photosync, which are way better and completely self hosted.

Head up, if you are on Android and don’t see the Photoprism option in PhotoSync then use WebDAV as it’ll give you the same outcome.
you can also install the Progressive Web App from your browser for iOS and android. AFAIK no syncing for the PWA due to permission limtiations.
WebDAV just complains about an error. Able to sync from the Photoprism app but it is stupid painful in that you have to select each photo one at a time. Back to the drawing board I guess.
please make a video for android ...please please please
Unsure how it was 1 year ago BUT using webdav triggers an auto index for photoprism, so you don't have to go into the app and click index. It gets triggered after 4-5 minutes after you synced.
Too bad photosync cannot display photos on photoprism. I feel there's plenty of programs to sync but very few to actually sync and view at the same time.
You can select a folder to sync and it will auto sync all photos that are in there. I selected my camera roll folder. You need to have bought the feature though.
Finally someone showing a valid alternative!
I need powerful search function in my photos or the backups is worthless for me.
I love these NAS videos . Just got a NAS a few months ago and your videos have been invaluable
the main issue with Photosync is that since I'm trying not to pay an eternal subscription to Apple or Google, the app being based on a subscription model makes no sense to me. My main motivation to set up something like this is that I want to own my data and not to pay some company for my entire lifetime or worse, have my data held as hostage until I pay
So you want someone to do all the hard work for you and give them nothing in return?
I think they might have a payment option that is one off payment, just doesn’t have the automatic backup feature
You can sub to premium lifetime for $25 or do $6.49/yr. Totally get why you’d want a full on FOSS solution, but I think it’s a small price to pay the people who made the app. At least it’s no where near the same cost as a big corp solution
Folder sync is an interesting alternative
Tested and worked instant, i hosted the PhotoPrism on my unraid linux setup. Great thanks for sharing and showing the features of the tools.
I was just looking to self host Photo Backup on my RPi.
Thanks man for the video!
It worked really great for sharing my Christmas photos with all family. I took photos, uploaded to the folder, my wife did her picking of the best photos and created an album, then we just emailed the link to that album. Hopefully in the future they add multiuser. Having my wife and kids get their own user name would be safer...she likes deleting. I made the database read-only for now.
Great review and covering all possible uses cases. Great! 😊
How is de-duping handled with photosync -> cloud providers? Mostly thinking that I'll regularly want to dump my whole iPhone to b2, but might still have 75% of them on my phone. I don't want to have to manually select X days of most recent photos. Also curious if I delete from phone if it wipes the remote. Backups are tricky.
Just come across this video. Fantastic video, really helpful, thanks!
Apparently now PhotoPrism supports multi-User? Any chance of an update :D
This is great!!!! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the video. How do i point it to store the photos on my NAS ?
Tryed to add SAMBA volume to the docker compose, but got an maria db error.
This looks sick! Docker sounds intimidating so I may just start with Photosync. I've been spending the past couple days trying to create a home media server on a 2011 mac mini my dad had lying around. I was planning to buy a Direct Attached Storage and setup RAID on a few hard drives for storing my own photos, videos, and movies. But I can't find any way to view photos on the mac from my iPhone using native Apple apps! So I think I'll build a PC with a bunch of hard drives and use photo sync to store all the photos and videos my wife and I take. That way I don't have to pay for iCloud. Once I've got that all setup and photosync going, maybe I'll be ready to look into docker. I saw Jellyfin is supposed to also be able to handle home photos and videos.
Does photosync preserve all the metadata when you export the photos? When I try to combine my families vacation photos their iphones strip all the metadata and they all show up out of order.
I set this up a month ago. It's great 👍. I'm putting together a new server specifically for it. Just a think station thing from eBay with a new drive. It's great.
How about support for multiple users? The support for that seems to be limited on Photoprism. Any workarounds?
Appreciate the video. I currently have several different file shares of photos and videos. Most are backed up to cloud services, but it is a pain trying to find pictures or managing them.
I am using Photoprism as a docker container in Portainer however I want to create a backup of this Photoprism so if anything goes wrong with current stack then I can atleast restore my photos files. Can you create a video of how to create weekly or daily backup of Photoprism to hard disk or another volume in a docker environment.
it has been year just checking is this still the best option to self host?
Thank you sir. Prism has been my photo app and it is rock solid. Now I am moving to immich which I don't have to mimic with other apps. You should try!
Can i define how much local disk space Photo Prism uses on my Android device for photos and transfer older pictures to my Server and just leaves a thumbnail locally?
Do you know if I can use it as a complete iCloid Photos replacement?
I know I can send photos to my NAS, BUT, what about two way sync? If I delete something in my Prism NAS instance, I'd expect not to do manually delete in the iCloud Library,,,
Thank you very much, may be i can switch from Syncthing to Syncphoto... :)
I have used Photosync for a few years and was impressed enough to buy the Pro version (I didn't even know there was a Premium option). The only thing that really drives me crazy is the lack of multiple select from source: I have to either do ALL or select one by one - no swipe of range option (that I've ever seen). Clicking on 100+ photos is tedious, and that's not even a busy day.
I've been trying to ditch dropbox camera backup for a week or two now
tried syncthing - no selective sync for getting photos BACK to your phone
resilio sync - has selective sync but has no preview for photos/files via the app so no way to know which photo is which when you're trying to get them back onto your phone
maybe photoprism is what i need
Can photo sync work with nvidia shield tv pro media server?
For a noob like me, can the connection be done through Cloudfare tunnel instead of doing reverse proxy and etc.?
A SMB share and FolderSync on Android works pretty well to back photos up, or whole phone data, on a schedule if you want. Not the only solution, just another one. Still neat to see Photoprism. Thanks.
@RaidOwl What if I already have a photo library on a NAS? Can I point PhotoPrism at my photo directory? to add labels to? I don't want to duplicate files.
Does the PhotoSync sync the photos in the background on iPhone or do you need to open the app to sync them? I used to use Nextcloud and it would only auto-transfer (aka sync) when you opened the app.
Yes, you can set it to automatically sync and it’ll do it in the background.
I have PhotoPrism up and running. I can access it from anywhere. What I can't do is login or whatever on PhotoSync. I'm not sure what the issue is.
How do you get rid of duplicates?
Do you know what makes me feel dumb?
PhotoPrism doesnt find photos in the "originals" folder, but if it point the "import" line to the same exact folder, it finds those no problem, i can even point the "originals" to a folder inside of the folder i'm importing and it the import will copy all files to that sub folder, repeatedly(i dont care what happens to the files on this machine its just for testing so i dont screw up my main library of ~170k photos)
How does it identify photos that are already backed up and the ones that are not?
When syncing the photo to the computer, does it also save the date a location of where it was taken?
Yes it's already part of photos metadata
Thank you. I will give it a try on my Raspberry pi 4 8Gb. Keep up the good work.
Is there a way to do this with cludflare tunneling?
if So do you plan on doing a video about tunneling in general to access homelab outside the home instead of opening ports
Yes and I already have a a Cloudflare Tunnel video haha
@@RaidOwl awesome, an android guide would be great. Please share any links if you know any. Thanks again.
When I first installed this I could transfer videos... Now I can't transfer videos that are longer than about 15-20seconds..... anyone have this issue?
Docker install darktable to edit RAW files, darktable saves edits to XML sidecar files
Did you do anything special with NPM to get it to work with Photoprism? I can connect to Photoprism with the IP and port but not with my subdomain URL, locally or externally. NPM is working without issue on 11 other apps.
I guess you have to activate websockets on npm for WebDAV, I had the same issue
I have the same problem. I connect through local IP with no problem but i cant using subdomain URL. Did you find a solution?
@@lcbdias Unfortunately, no. It just never worked for some reason. So I went another route for this sort of thing, and only use photoprism locally with the IP and port.
Hmmm? Happy to pay for an app, but built Photoprism server to get away from Google Photos storage limitations and monthly fees times 3 accounts, but auto sync worked well. Now Photosync wants to trade recurring storage for photo app fees. Is there any iOS app with auto sync that doesn't charge a monthly fee?
You can buy PhotoSync lifetime for $24? I just did yesterday.
Why not use PhotoPrism Uploader instead?
Awesome video. Can we share our photos stored in photoprism?
Yes you can
Hi, is it also syncing deleted photos. So if i delete a photo in photoprism or on my computer, does the software recognise it and deletes it everywhere else?
This is a setting that be changed to whichever option you prefer.
What are the advantages of PhotoPrism over NextCloud with Memories app?
I've set up Nextcloud ... "photo" make mistake on date and time in timeline ... VERY BAAAAAAD, set up memories and it work better with dates, set up Recognize ... It didn't work, maybe (surely) I'm not able to do a good job. Try yourself maybe you are lucky or are more skilled.
Awesome
This is awesome! Thanks
@RaidOwl does Photoprism have to be exposed? Can it just be used on LAN and every time you are home it just uploads?
It can definitely work without being exposed 👍🏼
great Video, I just wanted to start looking in these kinds of solutions, since I want to get rid of my 10€/month icloud subscription. This seems to do exactly what I am looking for. Will install and test it before I extend it to wifey's phone for the ultimate user experience test.
If you have a family, all generating a lot of data in the form of photos and videos this should be a no-brainer if you have the skills to set it up. I bought a Synology NAS a couple of years ago but did not get to actually installing any apps on it until recently. Now I am running several apps including Synology Photos where I have 17K photos/videos backed up and searchable. It's been a revelation!
Other alternatives
FOSS:
Photoview
LibrePhotos
Piwigo
Immich
Damselfly
non FOSS:
Synology Photos
Synology Moments
could be a great video comparing these google photos alternative.
Excuse me for being new, what’s FOSS?
@@Dirty_Bear22 Free Open Source Software :)
More to that FOSS list:
Lychee
Photonix
Lomorage
You can find some Feature comparisons on librephotos docs page.
Any difference between this and Nextcloud sync?
Nextcloud sync isn’t up to the job on a mobile - stops after a short while. Works fine from a Mac/pc.
Can I add more then one storage location in docker? No multiuser support?
Not yet I don’t believe
@@RaidOwl I am looking for multiuser support too, I hope they can do this, I want my photo for different users can be got to it too, but I think the enterprise plan has it, but the community edition is doing it.
Nested albums are essential to me and I would also need to add some custom fields per photo (not keywords).
So, my hunt continues...
maybe piwigo, I'm studing on that
can you set this up without a reverse proxy? What is another way if possible??
Cloudflare Argo tunneling
@@RaidOwl please make a cloudflare tunneling(argo) tutorial for those behind CGNAT. thank you.
Yes i need this too.. i stressed too much opening port and then found out my isp is behind cgnat.. Highly requested video..
Any chance you can share the themplates?
docs.google.com/document/d/1lmoIOq_Xffuu6ESZc265cmYNmCKbTxuB0-o6utOKqGQ/edit?usp=sharing
use Lomorage to backup the photo instead of photosync
Does it save the date of the photo of when it was taken when you use lomorage?
@@Emily-bm1er yes, it save the original file and date is in the metadata
I already have DAM software. I don't need a Docker instance, using up CPU cycles doing all this extra stuff. I just want a way to have my photos automatically uploaded, and merely dumped into a folder for later retreival. I know that doesn't make for a "sexy" UA-cam video. But I think that is all most people really need.
Anybody tried lycee photo management ?
I looked into Lychee, and it's pretty neat. But be aware it's solely a photo gallery and doesn't even plan to support videos.
I think it'd be nice as a "Check out my pictures and nothing else" kind of gallery though. :)
совершенно непонятно куда тыкать, и зачем, если есть truenas? просто у меня нет iphone, может потому всё это через непонятное направление...... и что это??
no pictures found, what can i do?
I just use syncthing
Great but pretty plain Android support. And Premium only works on iOS.
Good video, though, premium features for Photosync is iOS only. Also, the pricing is a bit over the top with 7 tiers and no lifetime on Premium. One thing you did not touch on was is if the app needs to be purchased for each device you intend on using it on.
PhotoSync Premium - Yearly $6.49
PhotoSync Premium - Monthly $0.99
PhotoSync Pro - Lifetime $5.99
PhotoSync Premium - Monthly $0.99
PhotoSync- Premium Lifetime $14.99
PhotoSync Premium - Lifetime $24.99
PhotoSync Premium - Yearly $6.49
I used the same account on my iPad and iPhone so that’s a good thing. Thanks for the insight!
Premium has a lifetime option? You just listed it?
Synology Photos is also a great alternative
That's what I use (DS916+) with 40 TB, and the app is free for all devices and uploads in full resolution.
If you have a synology of course! (Yes, i know about the xpenology project)
Since it's recognizing faces through A.I. Can you teach it, so that it doesn't continue to think you're a building. Ha ha
Tip iPhone photo Backup~ each album
Sigh, I'm not a person 😆
Will never use photoprism. They want $7 p/month for uncompressed photo… IE, if you use the version this guy is talking about, your photos will be compressed to under 1mb each. Making this option utterly worthless.
was just trying it on truenas scale sadly is not able to make multiple account to share the service with the family
Yeah that’s an annoying limitation for sure
