Built a flatcar load using a old spent rifle cartridge and thin wire for cables. DO NOT TRY THIS PROJECT IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO IDENTIFY A USED CARTRIDGE FROM A LIVE CARTRIDGE.
That is a great idea, sir. You could probably saw the front off of something small, like a .22 LR casing, and stack a few to use as pipe sections. Did you need to do anything beyond soaking the casing in water to get the paint to stick? Sanding? Degreasing?
Simplest things are just the things that you can do to make it interesting. Great conversation starters at train meets.

A light sanding and a wipe down.
