The first thing to remember when dealing with any injury: GET IT DIAGNOSED BY A GOOD PHYSIOTHERAPIST. We can't stress that enough. It's absolutely invaluable to have a good physio who understands both you and BJJ at these times. Once you've gotten diagnosed and know exactly what the issue is, you can start to make decisions on how to best go about your training.

I’ve had the same injuries over the years rest and wearing a sturdy knee brace with metal hinges works best. When rolling change your stance hide injured leg and don’t let them grab your ankle to prevent further knee injuries or pain. My knee brace was worth every $$$ because it allowed me to continue rolling 🤙

Absolutely. Using an external brace can definitely be a good solution in the short term. I guess the strategies presented in this video are more looking at what sustainable strategies are in the long term. How is your knee now?

Thank you. I had a somewhat serious accidental knee reap last night and am trying to process how bad it is. Without insurance its hard to see doctors for me for anything but I may check with the physio office next to my chiro after my appointment today. Love you guys' show and will join the program soon.

I tore my meniscus in November of last year and haven’t gone back to the mats because it’s never felt stable. Granted, I’ve been working out consistently on the knee since then so it may have never had time to properly heal, but I’m desperate to get back to training. Side note- Andre galvaos post fight speech on his tear sounds like my symptoms to a tee…..
This is by far the best advice video on bjj specific meniscus tears and guidelines on what you should be doing. Many many thanks

Tanner, so glad the video was helpful for you. Sorry to hear about the knee too. If you have the means id suggest getting it assessed and potentially scanned through a physiotherapist. If you can find out exactly whats injured your rehab will be that much more effective.

It never heals. Rehab it but it never heals. The surgery options are getting better so there’s hope if you can get the right surgery.

First injury ever on my knee, haven't checked it out with anyone but this video motivated me to do just that. I want to train for the rest of my life lmao.

Great video. What guards do you recommend. I'm playing half at the moment but as soon as there is pressure I'm trying to let it go and manage distance to retain or changing guards constantly.

My understanding is that bottom half guard was developed by Gordo after he suffered some kind of knee injury.

Yes that is the common understanding. We just have a slightly different approach to getting knees right.

I shredded my meniscus trying to wrestle up from turtle while sitting on the tops of my feet. By not getting on the ball of my foot, I allowed the knee to pronate inward making it susceptible to tear when I had to bear another guy's weight onto myself trying to wrestle up. Once I get back I'll rework my turtle game, to only be on the balls of my feet, to protect my knees. Sure, people can grab the ankle and initiate a leg attack, but leg attacks are my jam so I don't care.

I’ve stopped for a year and still have issues. It felt good, but then I put pressure on my knee by going into side control and even that was too much. Sad.😞

Do you have any advice for getting back to jujitsu? I dislocated my knee cap so I have took a few weeks off of training. I think I may have torn a meniscus or something, it's driving me crazy not to go train but my knee don't feel stable and I still feel like it would pop out. Is this a common injury in BJJ and wrestling, I train both the same time.

    • @bulletproofforbjj

Hey Brandon, sorry to hear about your knee. Yes, unfortunately knee injuries, and more specifically meniscus injuries, are very common in BJJ. You should go and see a physiotherapist as soon as possible and get a proper diagnosis. They will be able to do some manual tests to determine what the issue most likely is. Depending on findings there, they may want to do an MRI. Once they can see what the issue is, you can start your rehab. Hopefully it's nothing major (and it usually isn't) but it's always good to take caution. I have had enough injuries to know ; ). Also, it does suck not being able to train. But it sucks way worse having a wrecked knee for the rest of your life. Take care of yourself now, so you can be a savage tomorrow.

Great advice. I love training BJJ but I continually have issues with my knee. I’ve had some success in S&C following the knees over toes guy’s workouts. Your video made my realize that every injury of mine occurred playing open guard. Avoiding that position is obviously a good countermeasure but easier said than done, especially as smaller guy where I feel like I’m always getting smashed by teammates. How exactly can I change my game to get me out of these situations?Thank you for putting this information out there.

Hi coach! I had acl injury few months ago on judo, actually on warming up runing. Unfortunutelly i cant go to surgery because of work time etc. Im doing squats, extensions on gym, without problems. Pls,tell me? Is there any chance i can do bjj? If your answer is yes, which one GI or NO GI? Where is less chances to hurt my knee. Thank u in advance! All best to u and ur family from Montenegro/Europe🇲🇪

      @bulletproofforbjj  Рік тому +1

Hello Boris! It's not possible for me to say if you could do BJJ or not. I would get an MRI, speak to a specialist and ask them. If this isn't an option one thing you could do is start to introduce some light multidirectional work into your training (kicking a football around casually, or similar). If you can move in this way and not cause yourself any pain then you might be OK to train BJJ. On the flipside, if you keel over in pain the moment you try and change directions jiu jitsu probably isn't for you.
