You can also attach the counterpoise to one of the the belt clip screws - they are connected to chassis ground in the radio.
Wow, great results. Thank you for the video and the tests! Very helpful.
My gosh, that is an incredible difference! Thanks for sharing the video.
Very good video. Nice to see someone actually test it
That's awesome. Cheers from Australia 🙂👍👍👍
Got the same radio. I’ve got 35 miles with just a 10” antenna. Haven’t tried it with a counter pose wire yet. But great little radios.

Use this mod with a 771 antenna for even better results. 👍
Did it work as I ordered 2 771 antennae for my son's and my baofeng?
Now imagine how much better it would be if you actually put a decent flexible antenna on with the counterpoise!
Nice watch
Woah . I will have to try that . It helps tx also looks like 👍
Brilliant ! What on earth made you think of doing that ? Just passed my Foundation and only have a Ailunce HD1. Live in highrise flat. Any ideas for a indoor antenna for UHF/VHF ? Dafydd M6ULU
Would you please make a video of how far you can transmit with that added wire
That’s very interesting. What gauge wire did you use? Sounds much better afterwards.
I still have to get my licence. Have you tried this on 446 pmr frequency? Would make an interesting video for a range test. Thanks. Wayne
I always suspected this being the major flaw in portables, if you hold it in your hand the effect is the same and probably improves the counterpoise in a way. Now we see first hand prove of the amazing quality bump it has if you attach a wire. I wonder when they supply ready made antennas with a wire attached. Does it do the same as a choke coil? Did you experiment with spiraling the wire around the base of the antenna? Try that for a change, probably cleaner to look at. THANKS !
I'm thinking you may be able to move the wire and antenna into a v shape. ... And have it slightly directional
For any new hams that might be watching, the Counterpoise length is critical because it is cut to equal a 1/4 Wavelength on 2 Meters. I wonder if adding a SECOND shorter wire for 70 Cm. would have a similar effect on that Band? THAT's the next video you should do.!
Thank you , I was thinking a shorter wire for 70cm with a spade on the end so you can connect the other length to make the 2 meter counterpoise, Ill work on it :-)
Bruce, I've read elsewhere that a 19.5 inch counterpoise wire is approximately a 3/4 wave length for 70 cm (actually about 71%), so should work to extend the range on 70 cm as well. I haven't seen this done, so a test would be nice!
Can you wrap up the cord
have a buddy in Scotland modifying a FCC regulated device and Interpol came and extradite him to the US he's doing 15 years in a federal penitentiary because of all these kids that were modifying their CB radios and interfered with some type of FBI special agent operation
what if i have a small walkie talki and cant take off the antenna
Does this work with vhf 2 way Radios?
does this tail help with "reception"?????????????????
What length would you cut the wire for 70cm?
I would try 16.5 cm this would be the bottom half of a 1\2 wave dipole
With ur counterpoise
I can't confirm the stated improvement in TX. I tested a bunch of very good Laird, Smiley, TYT VHF-antennas that are getting me to a 140km far repeater with 10W. HT. As for the 18dB you should check your S-meter, there is no way to achieve such gain with a counterpoise on a HT. My assumption why it's working for you: the stock Baofeng antenna you've used is mega bad.
+1, A proper counterpoise isn't just a random wire for the specific frequency band. The counter needs to match the electrical characteristics of the attached antenna, and at best is only cleaning up the SWR for +3dB (while capable of being pointed as a directional, I should add). I've done tests of a Baofeng F8HP and counterpoising as well, the UV-5 ants are bad, but the V85 is decent.
Someone help me use it on a baofeng BF-88a
Hi there I have been playing around with counterpoises on my yeasu ft60 e and have found a 3 s point increase in incoming and outgoing signals, I use a 19.5 inch length of coax cable terminated with a solder on eyelet looks a bit neater but it's supprising the difference in signal using a rats tail good video and interesting. 73 da de da
18 db for about ten cents worth of wire. Now I'd say that is in the true ham radio spirit.

Okay, I've been searching for 40 minutes and I can NOT find the song playing in the background. Would you be so kind as to tell me what the name of the song is?
Also, great video!
LOL you wont , its my daughter ... ua-cam.com/users/TheAlexandraLeigh
@@soundwaves1545 Wow, that's awesome! Your daughter is amazingly talented!
how long does it need to be cut for uhf
16 cms
How far away wete u plz
About 3/4 of a mile , with a bit of a hill in the way
Every ham has that green pad with the yellow lines, weird hu?
How many cm should the cable be?
no answer? I lookin too
For 2m band its about 19.25 - 19.5 inches (around 49 cm) and for 70cm band its about 17,1 cm length (19,5 inches *7/20). I think you can combine the two. The gain will be depending also on the antenna in use - it has to match. Best is to check it with a NanoVNA for SWR and input impedance matching 🙂
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
How much long for 70 cm band
Somebody already replied 16.5 cm.
@@Waynethepainsmurf thanks
Would this work on the receive side too ?

Is it acceptable to attach it to the belt slip screw on the back of the radio.
or to 1 of the screw for attaching the belt clip..
99 yes because scrue fit on corp/ground9
Exactly how much more range did you get???

hello i just go a handheld scanner wat dose it do wen u put a eire on it

@@stfuplsok 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Should be 19.65 inches.
What about for marine frequencies of 156.300 to 157.100 when I'm 10 miles offshore - ? How long should the wire be for best TX and RX?
And should I use my Abbree 42.5 inch fold out antenna instead of the rubber duck that came on it - ?
Nice video, it showed as as spam since I think you're going around sharing it in the comments of videos. Generally a good idea to reach out to the creators you want to cross-promote with before just posting links on their videos.
Thank you Josh , great channel by the way
what kind of wire would you have to use
+Russell Ferris good question.
Hi Russell , I have used just basic speaker wire
are you planning on making a video on this>? i searched on your channel and havent found one.
Suggestions please for other videos
No way! Bouncing s1 to a 40 over? Shut the front door!
I agree, I do believe this will help, but that is quite a jump in gain. Needless to say, I am gonna try it to see what happens
it will give u a better receive ,, thats all .. maybe u should get a new antenna
*reception
this is a first generation Baofeng antenna and its real bad.
S1 to s9+??? I dont belived
I found it hard to believe as well

That is dramatic
Legit looks like a snake oil type of thing ha ha.
It’s not, it’s basic electrical engineering. Here in the US building these are part of most General (Level 2) Ham Radio License study guides.
They are called a counterpoise. They also work really well for using the radio hands free with a push to talk.
@@agmsmith4079 you don’t have to explain it, I simply said it “looked” like it. Not that it was.

And why does that work? Such videos bring nothing without explanation. Just bluntly imitate something, you learn nothing.
So sick of all the BS. A single piece of wire is NOT a counterpoise! :- In electronics and radio communication a counterpoise is a network of suspended horizontal wires or cables, used as a substitute for an earth connection in a radio antenna system. What you are talking about is a dipole. Are there no more technical ham radio folks around anymore?
Do you believe the result of his test?
Why do people keep doing this stupid version of the mod ?
You only need to attach a wire to one of the belt clip screws ! They're grounded too !
The teenage girl background music doesn't help us hear you !
PS: Only THREE countries in the world use inches to measure ! FFS
go be angry somewhere else also metric is just another measuring system that will get replaced in the future like all the rest.
@@TykeMison_ Metric will get replaced ? You Americans ! lol I'm guessing you don't even know it dates back to the 1790's and only the US, Liberia & Myanmar use Imperial ? LMAO
It really took you EIGHT months to come up with that comment ??
