The edit of the one drill bit going into the wood and different being pulled out didn’t go unnoticed! Nice job!
This whole show is similar to a magician slowly revealing the secrets to his trick thereby making you want to stay to the last minute. Nice trick.
For me it was the photo shoot with Andy the shop assistant. Chefs kiss. ❤️🏳️🌈❤️🏳️🌈❤️
Paper is ‘always’ strongest at the perforations!!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻for the future, harbor freight sells marine grade heat shrink kits that already has glue in it ,that melts when you shrink it. As well as most electrical supply houses.
Just loved the photo shoot at the end. Your content is the best. Thanks for posting
I've found the perforations in Charmin toilet paper to be very reliable. Not perfect, but about as good as can be reasonably expected, I think.
I’m still trying to figure out why you didn’t just jump off of the ladder and grab the middle of the backdrop to then ride it gracefully to the ground like a pirate - cutlass (or other implement of art/destruction) clasped firmly in your teeth… alas, that opportunity has passed now that you have created this system. 😂🤪 I always look forward to seeing your videos!
Your videos are a real _treat_ to watch!
This ought to work better than your previous "system."
Regarding fitment of that bearing, a trick I've used successfully is to heat the bearing - I've wrapped it in a wet towel & stuck it in the microwave; also used a toaster oven. Learned this from AvE's videos. (I've also stuck the axle/rod/shaft in the fridge or freezer.)
PS: Thumbs up and thanks for posting!
Nice work! Glad to see my namesake get the full workshop photo shoot treatment.
Hint for cutting rope: Wrap the rope with painter's tape (enough to go around the circumference maybe twice or three times) at the place you're planning the cut. Cut in the middle of the tape, heat the ends to melt, then remove the remaining tape.. The tape wrapping holds the fibers together, keeping them from fraying while the rope's being cut.
I am sure you know, but you can get photo backdrop vinyl which granted is heavier, but it lasts a lot longer and you can clean it. I forget where I bought mine years ago, but it was a 10-12' wide and 30 some odd feet long. Lasted for years and was in good enough shape when I closed my studio, I sold it.
There was me thinking the hot glue in the shrink wrap was genius! 😁😉
great video! Colby would be proud
very nice build Wesley. Thanks for sharing the dumbs! We are all dumb, we just hide it..
If you're not my fav runway model, I don't know who is! I really like what you did with the thumbnail.
There is "outdoor" heat shrink that had hotmelt clue pre-applied to the inner surface, which works well for the end of ropes.
(I'm going to assume Wesley already knows this and just didn't have any in stock)
I did not, thanks!
@@WesleyTreat searching McMaster-Carr for"adhesive-lined-heat-shrink-tubing" will find it, but it's available at less costly suppliers as well.
@@pileofstuff These ropes does not always need glue, as the bond you get by just melting the ends and squeeze them together really makes the ends meet (sorry, needed to use the last one there...).
You are one clever dude.
In case you didn't know it already, they make adhesive lined heat shrink that's basically just regular heat shrink with hot glue on the inside that melts when you shrink the tubing. They have it on McMaster but you'd probably have had to order like 6 feet of it lol.
There is also the euphoniously named Star Brite 'Dip and Whip' which you dip the end of the rope in and it forms a tough covering on the end. Much used by the sailing fraternity and the dipping and whipping brigade too. Thou I wouldn't know about that.
Nice upgrade!! Good idea to loop the end weight it with a pipe
Andy needs friends! I would suggest a policeman, a soldier, a biker, a cow boy and a native American. 😆
I have the cowboy and a farmer, so I'm partway there. 👍
🤣
and they could all be eating nachos, man
Where would they possibly stay?😳
Cool man ! Really like your stuff ! 👍👍👍👍👍
Excellent video and presentation. I'm not sure what you do for a living but I am sure that you must be very good at it. Thanks for the video.
Thanks!
@8:20 yes mate, postal stamps!
Cool results, always fun to see the problem solving design process.
Can you put multi colored led lights behind paper to give you different colored backgrounds?
Fun idea. I'm not sure how well it would work, though, because the paper is very thick.
Wesley this turned out very well. Hopefully you get great use out of it for many more years to come. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep Making. God Bless.
Matthias Wandel would approve of this solution
Another great video! I need one of those signs for my workshop. Keen to see what is next
Nice to meet you Andy! Where's the Indian, cowboy and police officer?
Excellent, huh, I totally get you on the perforation thing.
Very good!
That’s dope! Well done sir.
Nice design! I worked at a video post facility and we had something similar in front of the cyc. Used it all the time.
There's an Isaac Asimov short story about the imperviousness of perforations, and speculating that medieval armor could be made entirely of perforations!
7 seconds, give or take a few hours to build the whole thing :P
I really gotta put in the work one day to up my backdrop game. Nicely done!
Great film and build. Way better than the original. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Simply brilliant 👏👏
I remember Andy, he was in the Village People
Good name
What size of bit did you use on the CNC to cut the teeth on the pulley? I don’t have a CNC, but I’m thinking that I can replicate your design with the tools I have (I.e., band saw, router, drill press, etc). An elegant solution to a common studio problem!
You got a like and subscribe just from the hot glue oops mement :D Im not alone in doing that. PS I really want a dumb moments sign for my workshop now as well.
You could have simply heated up the bearing (or chilled down the aluminium rod) to make that fit work. (Maybe :-) )
Is that a 15ft long bois lélé?! Please say you're going to do a video on making that.
Well spotted! It's going on a tiki sign here in Dallas once I finish it, and there should be a video. 🍹
Another great project. And another great video. I have an off topic question. I have the same type of shop you do . I was wondering if you could tell me what the white insulation stuff is on the walls. My shop is plain metal and to darnn hot to work in. Thanks for any advice or help you can offer. And thanks for the great content you provide.
Thanks! It's some kind of spray-on insulation my dad had done when it was built about 15 years ago. That's all I know, sorry.
Always love your videos! I noticed your work pants and saw how functional and dapper they were. If you don't mind sharing what kind they are? I'm guessing DOVETAIL Workwear? Do they sell men's sizes? How do I size and fit for men?
They have size charts that will help you figure out what you need. I wear the Britts and they fit great. 👖
Cool
Really nice solution! Why did you choose paper as the material and not (washable) cloth/fabric? I'd love to understand your choice
I wanted to ask the exact same question.
Especially because he puts it on the floor and puts stuff on it.
I would imagine that it doesn't stay clean for long.
-And I would assume that such a huge roll of paper isn't inexpensive.- Edit: they are surprisingly cheap. A 2.7m x 11m roll (I guess that's approximately the size in this video) can be get for just 80€ or so including shipping.
Tyvek housewrap would work well, provided you can find it blank/un-printed on at least one side.
Thanks! Cloth is good for portability, but in general, photographers prefer paper for its smoothness. Cloth ripples and wrinkles more easily.
HI ANDY!
Like I always say, nothing is more permanent than a temporary solution!
kudos, love it. Hose clamps in lieu of zip ties?
Thanks! That occurred to me, but I didn't have any. I doubled up the zip ties and I couldn't move the bearings without a lot of effort.
Omg, what timing! I am currently wrestling with this very thing, just on a smaller scale. 😆 Love it man, keep it up! Also..
FIRST!!!!
So how does this work do I get a customized plaque or something??!
You get a Post-It with an ink stamp
@@WesleyTreat Promises Promises. 🤪💌📬
Nice work. You could have saved your burnt fingers and just connected the rope by heating both ends and smashing them together. But then, how would you segue into a Starbond promotion? You're dedicated to your craft my friend. Your new roller needs a new sound. brr......brrrrr.......brrRRRRR....BRRRR...BRRRRRRBRRRRRBBRRRRRBRRRRBBRRRR!
Thanks! I tried that, but unfortunately it didn't work. The core didn't melt very well. The glue and shrink tube worked surprisingly well.
My roll has a bend in it. My wife likes it.
She just doesn't want to hurt your feelings.
I think it's called a "white lie"
"Oh hey hot glue in heatshrink, that's smart! Glues AND shrinks at the same time, why didn't I think of tha- oh."
Do you think another free hanging pully on the bottom with a bungee cord you can step on to give tension to the rope loop would make it easier to use?
I'm going to add a pulley with a weight. The pulley I had didn't fit. 😢
If you're looking for your "Red Makers Knife", watch Jimmy's latest video about the wood and leather chair. It shows up twice.
Ah, he's got the full red edition. Mine had only one red face.
I need the workshop dumb counter sign
Let's see..... sand the hardened bearing race or the soft conduit to fit? I've got time....😆
It took about 30 seconds to sand the bearing. Sanding 12 feet of tubing evenly would've been a challenge.
@@WesleyTreat Fair answer.
Nice work Wesley! Im curious about that candy machine you showed in the beginning of the video, is that for a restauration?
Thanks! I've done a number of them for a client. (Search my videos for Big Green Smoke Machine.) This one belongs to them and I've been storing it through the pandemic.
@@WesleyTreat Excellent, it is a machine that was used in a Video game :) - thanks for the quick reply
Xyla Foxlin would be a better assistant... hehe
Hey Wesley. What happened to GONK....?
👍👍👍👍
Where did you get Andy? I’m a teacher, and I was looking for workshop mascot.
A buddy sent him to me. Search "Fisher Price Husky Helper" on eBay. 👍
What is the horizontal drilling machine at 3:51?
My dad's old Shopsmith 👍
You are aware that you can melt the ends of nylon rope to each other to create a connection that is about as strong as the rope itself?
Yes, as long as the rope doesn't have a shitty, unmeltable core like this one.
@@WesleyTreat That is hard to judge over the video. By the way, while a melted joint (when possible) is usually as strong as the rope itself, it is also brittle, so it snag or break on the pulley regardless.
👍😎👍
Perforations, in my experience are a rip off.
