Here's how to use smart objects to make non-destructive edits:
.
But many operations - paint or retouch, for example - aren't non-destructive. The problem with only half doing it is that at some point in your workflow you're going to come across an operation that can't be applied non-destructively, you have to bake your work and effectively trash all of that work.
Smart objects are a hack, are shortcut workaround that lets you say, "Photoshop is non-destructive". It's a poor implementation.
Thanks for leering
You can't paint non-destructively.
And you can't heal non-destructively. There always comes a point where you have to bake, photoshop's non-destructive workflow is flawed.
Kim Aldis Why not heal or paint on a duplicate layer?
Stacking is AWESOME!
I had no idea this existed.
Thanks for this. I'll be referencing these in the future.
I always forget to convert to a smart object. Picked up a couple of new things in this vid. Keep up the good work.
Woa. So that's the use of smart object!!

Wow. This is fantastic. Is it possible to remove noise from a single image only ?
Thank you SO much for this. I've been trying to understand the use of Smart Objects and, while I now understand it better, I'm left with another question: Why not make every photo we open in PS a Smart Object by default? Does it inflate the size too much? I've been trying to find the "downside" to this tool but can't seem to find it.
HELP. it only shows the first option for me. @ 4:00 and when i convert the stack into a smart object after loading them in, it still won’t let me click on the ‘stack mode’.
this could have been a one minute video guys..you owe me 3.5 mins back :p
