So John was quite familiar with Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson who co- starred with gulp Frank Sinatra and Gina Lollobrigida. So Dick Powell must have let Steve do the film -1959. John Sturges was greatly responsible for Steve becoming a film star giving him roles in Steve’s best films from early in his career. “Never So Few”, The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape -1963. But Steve and John would have a falling out over the film “Lemans”. According to Steve’s first wife Neale Adams””John growing frustrated over Steve’s behavior and demands on the set of “Lemans finally said “ I’m too old and too rich to put up with this crap” so John quit the film and flew back to the USA.McQueen was making The Sand Pebbles in 1966 so he wasn’t available for the sequel but I doubt he and Yul Brynner ever wanted to work together again. But Robert Fuller now 90 who took over the role of “Vin” in the sequel said that on his first day of arriving on the set in Spain. Yul asked him “ do you play cards”. Fuller replied “ yeah I play cards”. Do you drink” Yeah I drink” Yul who was sitting outside of his trailer got up grabbed and sort of half pulled him and half body slammed him into the trailer and they drank a bottle of Johnny Walker Red but both went to work the next day. A little bit different than the relationship between Brynner and McQueen!!
