Is there an adjustable timing chain gear ? I've rebuilt a few engine in my day and I have never ever degree a cam. What exactly are you moving or adjusting to degree the cam ?
@@JustinMiales yes they do make adjustable cam gears as well but that’s for super fine precise tuning like racing applications. For a street build the crank gear is all you need, I have the three keyway which gives the stock 0 location in the middle or advance/retard 4 degrees in the other two if needed. They also make a crank gear with several keyway adjustments if you need it, again for more preside tuning not usually needed for most applications. As far as what I’m moving, it’s alittle too much to get into here but you’re checking the cam with your cam card to make sure everything matches to the manufacturer specifications that they say that cam is spec to. Sometimes you’ll buy a cam and it could be 4 degrees retarded and you would know unless you check the specs and seal for it could be advanced too far as well. By degreeing the cam you just basically double check behind the manufacturer to make sure the cam is what they say it is and that you get the best performance out of it for what it is ground for. I hope I explained that well and could help. If you’re still alittle confused by it, because trust me I was when I first started learning about this stuff, then go watch my video again or even check another channel out, they may be better at explaining it for you than I do. Thunderhead 289 has a great video covering how to degree a cam, so I’d recommend checking his video out as well. Good luck, hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Larry, great explanation of a sometimes confusing procedure.Happy New Year,
