I gotta confess...every once in a while I check back here just to hear all these f*cking riffs altogether...
Yep...here again..oh boy
@@marcosantoniogaleradasilva8279 same here
Hey how y'all doing? ✌🏻
Where's my boy J-Homme? We need more QotSA ASAP
@@marcosantoniogaleradasilva8279same
Finally someone who REALLY knows how to REALLY sound like Joshua Homme.
Ñañuco Nope. He should have to the neck pick all the time. That's the key of the queens sound.
"he should have to the neck pick all the time"
Midwest Livin' switched, dude.
That was Kyuss.
joshua is not qotsa
That satin black 335 fits the Homme vibe so perfectly, this vid sounds great
Well that’s actually one of his guitars that he uses along with the Motorave.
"How to sound like Unknown Mortal Orchestra" would be the most rewarding and greatest one in history.
+JustSpencer yes yes
JustSomebody it's impossible, it can't be done.
God damn song for the dead sounded fuckin so sick
the best job I've seen anyone do at emulating homme's tone
+Lawrence Stowe Thanks, Lawrence!
Livingroom Gear Demos Anytime my man! keep it up! i never new that catalinbread pedal existed to get those ampeg tones! very handy!
I’d say a little too much gain, but perfect other than that. That little sister solo section was 👌🏼
unfortunately a lot of his tone comes from those Ampeg amps. I have one and if i dial it correctly its about as spot as as it can be aside from me using a different guitar, but the drawback is that the amp needs to be IGNORANTLY loud to get the natural overdrive from the tubes. My little Ampeg combo is easily the loudest amp I own and I also have a 100w marshall lol. Their tone is based on the volume of the amp, not gain from a pedal because just about any tube amp with have "distortion" when it gets loud enough
And that is how the magic is done.
Cheers from Brazil ,mate.
+Douglas Dias Cheers!

Livingroom Gear Demos how do you make such cool delay/reverb sounds at the start of the video. I would love to know!!
Nice playing and that matte finish 335 is gorgeous man.
Btw for anyone seriously interested in developing a QOTSA-like tone, the most integral pedal is a set-wah (or parametric filter whatever you wanna call it). It's pretty much his base tone for everything else. It's how you get that hollowed out drone without having to add an unruly amount of gain.
I think he used to use the MXR Q-Zone, but they aren't in production anymore. Stone Deaf Electronics makes one called the PDF-1 that I'm fairly certain he uses now. I bought one, flipped it on, sounds like Josh. Add fuzz, delay, and octave effects where needed.
1:20 that’s the speed of SFTD if Joey’s playing with you
Great song choices throughout, and Little Sister is spot on!
Oh my! This is FANTASTIC!!!! You've really captured Josh's tone (at least according to my ears).
This is the second video I see from you where you play A Song for the Deaf. I thought I was the only one who's obsessed with that song.
spot on, way better than the dudes over at andertons who tried this
John Doe well this one does not have a budget
Aidan Lefeld Yeah but doing something on a budget doesn't have to be sub-par. In fact you don't need to buy these exact pedals if they're too pricy, you just need something very similar at a low price point.
John Doe Agreed but Catalinbread SFT is essential in my opinion.
PublicEnemy-1 Or you can buy a bass cab similar to it, that's all it's doing
John Doe Or I could go SFT which is what most people have recommended to me over the years. I mean if that's all it's doing then why not go for SFT? Seems to me like most people agree it's a Homme essential no?
Excellent job my friend, sounds exquisite. Mr. Homme keeps his board well hidden, cheeky devil.
Still 80x better than "busting the bank"
the BY busting the bank version they did was a huge improvement
Living Room "Pedals Series" And Potent Pairings are the Best
Youve come a long way from this video, its like being a father watching his son grow up 😪😭. Keep up the great content bruv
haha thanks Jay!
Fuck, when you launched into the chorus for A Song for the Deaf it reminded me how great it was, compositionally and tonally. Top work man, out of all the 'sound like' attempts on YT, you nail it better than anyone
Thanks, Theo!
how to sound like queens of the stone age: spend like 5000 on equipment, play guitar for 30 years. two easy steps
bgreco100 Most of josh' guitars cost close to or more than 5000 so... yeah, more like 30.000 at least
bgreco100 I can get an almost perfect tone with 1 really old multi effect pedal and a peach bandit 112 with lows all the way up with highs to 2/10 and miss halfway, running fuzz on the multi effect pushing 30 of 30 gain and a limiter effect on using a Gibson sg on the neck pickup and turn the tone knob all the way down and when I want their other not so low tones I turn the knob up and turn lows down a little and highs up and drop the mid.
haha but he started with some random used one he found at a store.
APAL880 Yeah an Ovation Ultra GP that’s like the gold standard of les Paul copies. They aren’t cheap now either.
@@hannesh.3349 his producer once said that they went to a store and bought a lot of cheap shit for songs for from the deaf
Enjoyed the video, very nice tone as always. I'm a massive QotSA fan and you got really close. Maybe just a bit too defined, where Josh's tone can be a bit looser in the bottom end. That's what ears pickup anyway. Keep these videos coming :)
it's actually extremely close if compared with josh's live tone since it was tad bit more defined than the album tone
Agreed, it would have to be a bit more tight a focused live to cut through I suppose. I listened to Songs For the Deaf the other day and the tones are so varied from track to track and the guitars aren't as high in the mix as you would think. The bass is more prominent, so it would be hard to nail the tone on the record. Much easier of Lullabies or Rated R or self titled as there is a bit more consistency.
There's a cool video from the producer (who actually got fired from SftD) on youtube where he takes you through how they approximately got the tones (doesn't mention exact gear as he respects Josh's privacy on gear). Really interesting and worth looking up.
I swear that all you need is a Big Muff 😂😂😂😂 these suckers spent hundreds .
josh rarely/never used muff though but he did use stone deaf pdf alot, so if you wanna rip off his basic tone get a lp, tele or semihollow style guitar, clean amp, catalinbread sft (if you failed to get some ampegs in your area), stone deaf pdf, and reverb pedal, but thats only covering first 4 qotsa album and some others since the later stuff (ESPECIALLY TCV) the tones are weirder and you pretty much had to guess by ear and shitload of other pedals
Guy Mann that’s great to know man, good job on debunking .
I would say a little less gain, to let the sound "breath", and it should be perfect !
Really nice job.
The same on the Kyuss era would be nice too !
This is such a sick video. And the ebony Es-335 is my favorite guitar of all time. I was stoked when I opened this video and saw that. Nice job dude.
+Lex Thistlethwaite Thanks, buddy!
one of the hardest tones to nail. but this is just about the best I've heard anywhere bro, straight up.
You already know of my love for Mr. Homme so just wanted to say you now officially have my love too. this is fucking rad.
+Ryan Harding Hah, thanks Ryan!
Tones are excellent and accurate but you've also done a really great job of mimicking the playing. Awesome
thanks, Andrew! Check out part two that I just released as well!
How to sound like Josh Homme: Dress in black.
JK, great video!
Home doesn't wear black. Red more than anything.
Bruh thats robert smith you talking
PSA for all those looking to get Ye jho sound:
I spent two years trying to nail down his tone the best I could with pedals and ended spending an embarrassing amount of money trying to accomplish it that way. I recently picked up an early 70s ampeg vt22, had it serviced, and OH MY GOD IT JUST WORKS. The closest I ever got before this was with the catalinbread sft, and it did a good a job as any pedal can do trying to emulate a 120 watt monster.
Anyway the point I'm trying to get across is pick the right tools for the job when you can. Pedals are great and can help you be super versatile but if you're really seeking a certain sound it's often better to simply use the right amp and guitar combo when possible because that is always going to get you 90 % of the way to your ideal tone.
Hope this helps someone!
Awesome. Really enjoy these videos. Keep up the good work!
+Christian Elnegaard Thanks!
Awesome vid, not just full of correct and useful info, but you didn't bang on like so many youtubers, well played that man!
Thanks!
I don't usually like watching these sorts of videos but you absolutely nailed this!!
Fantastic sound man! You got it down perfectly. Nice playing as well.
Sound like Adam Jones from Tool! Cheers
Alucinante. I'm in shock of how HALLUCINATING this sound.
The slow version of ¨Better Living Through Chemistry¨ sounds so good.
Such amazing tone. Thick and luscious.
wow, u rule!!!! i was singing with you all the time!! u rock, man!! cheers from brazillll!!!
Thanks!
Nice job man! Definitely sounds like Homme. Great video!
Thanks!
Great video, straight to the point, no bullshit intro or outro. Thank you.
Thanks!
Forgot to mention the key part that took me years to figure out - crank the mids all the way up and you're in QOTSA heaven! I find that using the neck pickup also helps
+Luka Nikolic I think using the bridge pickup and turning down the volume knob on the guitar is better. I've almost never seen Josh using the neck pickup.
Your video makes me wanna get a satin ES-335 and leave in c standard lol! Nice job with sound man!
Love your channel. One of the only ones I actually subscribe to. Thanks for all the videos
I had to pause to see the unmentioned Octo Puss Prime pedal! awesome video. I wouldnt mind watching you play all of their stuff.
I think I lost my headache after watching this!
Great tone, mostly accurate playing. Good work
Bro u NAILED IT
Thanks for posting another "how to sound like"
+Seth Reinhardt Thanks for checking it out!
Livingroom Gear Demos Is the Pedal Projects Klone V3 a transparent overdrive?
I absoloutely love your videos man, seriously you nail everything! You know your tone sir!
+Eimhin Murphy Thank you, thank you!
Bro your how to sounds are sick, you should make a Kyuss one. I am very curious if you can emulate that special guitar sound of his guitar at that moment.
The beginning of Better Living through Chemistry sounds amazing
Awesome! Great playing and all that gear, so nice!
For everyone saying you have to spend too much money: Josh is also known for playing and recording with an Epiphone Dot. You can get that or an Epi 335 for ~$400 used
Man that is incredible stuff , really enjoyed .
+murtsworld666 Thanks for checking out!
Thank you so much for this video! You play beautifully!
singing along all these songs ❤❤❤ awesome bro
pretty sure he never used that much gain... maybe reduce pedal gain a little (tiny bit)
But good job (y)
It's in the ballpark and zero people in a club would give two shitz
Awesome job dude, very nice tone. Only suggestion I would make is maybe the gain is a little high, and a noise suppression pedal (or maybe a compression) would clean it up nicely...IMO. But overall excellent job.
LOVE LOVE THIS VID. MADE ME BUY A ES TO DO THE SAME THING. Now just to learn to play like that.....
Killer playing and great tones!
Just a tad less gain, but you're pretty much there.
Wow! You really nailed it.... again!
Someone should do a video on how to get the first qotsa bass sound, that sound is amazing 👏
Ive been looking for a very long time and your #1 man. Wow just wow. Ya nailed it. To bad I dont have any of this gear.
Thanks! You don't need it all. Start with the Catalinbread and maybe an EQpedal or a mid heavy overdrive,
Thanks. I took me a couple times watching it buI put it together and have already looked into the SFT. Very cool pedal.
Great demos, man! Love your page.
Much appreciated!
Damn good job! I love QOTSA and you nailed it
Awesome job, love this!
Amazing job man! Octo Puss Prime is a good alternative has the fulltone ultimate! Your video is going to help me:) thank you very much
Solid. Great choice of songs too.
I'm not often impressed by guitar players on youtube. But that was fuckn sick.
That was awesome!
+Amanda Chappel Thanks!
Excellent song choices
Sounds so epic !!
Great video, remember to use weird Japanese vintage guitars and other underground guitars - not deemed as quality. The finest guitars I have seen Josh use is like his Fender Telecaster, Motor Aveguitars (still awesome) and Mayton. Otherwise he uses a lot of interesting guitars. Most notable is his small collection of Ovation guitars he used a lot in the beginning of Queens and especially during the Kyuss-era
the Mayton got expensive after the word got around that he used it right?
Very nice vid mate, cheers
Thanks!
nice job man! Congratulations!
Nice one man. Cool set up and great playing \m/
Thanks!
Sorry, but you are officially the UA-cam QOTSA tone consultant.
This really was great, thanks a lot.
Good job dude. Sounds pretty fucking good to me.
Thanks!
Great job dude, really nailed it
Thanks!
AWESOME! I thought it was impossible to sound like him. I would love a video showing how to sound like Stephen Carpenter from Deftones, though.
Awesome ! 👌🏼
yeah! you nailed this one man !
Thanks!
This made me listen to Queens instantly...
You need to have mids on full. All mids on full!
And then have a EQ pedal will all mid boost
Excellent!
PERFECT!
I am jealous of all that gear you have
Still waiting for the Deftones episode
that delay sounds so sick I need to get one of those
Baby Duck would love this video.
Tangled up in plaid that's a blast to play
It is, indeed!
credit where credit's due......AWSOME QOTSA TONE!
Very beautiful guitar
Bro you're a genius , thanks you .
the little lead riff after the choruses on a song for the deaf are played more legato, like just pick once and let hammer on's/pull off's do the rest!
Oh the fender is all tube so thats a pretty big factor, that with the muff is just. Uhh. Then tune it down to queens tuning, yea
Could you do a vid on how to sound like Theresa Wayman and Emily Kokal from Warpaint ?
That would be amazing. Btw thank you so much for your amazing content !!
just continue doing "how to sound like". great video, great tone
+Pedro Antônio Parreira Will do and thanks!
Hi, pal! This attemp to get the real sound of QOTSA was so accurate.
How about the strings? What was the gauge? Did You use any baritone guitar?
Duuuuude! Great job! :-)
+Pulseband Dude, thanks for checking out! :)
+Livingroom Gear Demos hey! :) can you also do a "how to sound like KYUSS" would really appreciate it! Your " How to's...." are the best on youtube haha cheers!
damm you nailed it!
Thanks!
