I'd like to see your published research. That's a sweeping statement, and it means you KNOW ALL the intentions involved, have counted ALL those churches, have determined what exactly DEFINES a 'mega-church', and can show the correlation of responses from REAL PEOPLE running those churches with your definition of profit and comfort, and how THOSE 'purposes' as you call them, actually PRECLUDE any OTHER motivations, and have also CONFIRMED that with DIRECT questioning, and investigations to verify the truthfulness of those statements. Then, there is the question of time frame for your study. Were they ALWAYS so greedy and lustful, and are they still? Curious also to know of all your interviews with those congregations. You should DEFINITELY publish THOSE. SO. You must be in charge of a VERY WELL FINANCED operation, similar to a very successful author or attorney, or even an investigative reporting team or a law firm. Please show us your findings so we know what you say is not just wild superlative and generalization undergirded by ignorance and sour grapes. Could you please do that for us?

It’s not the size of mega churches or even the money itself that’s bad, it’s rich pastors buying Gucci and million dollar private jets when they should be giving back to the community. That’s the whole point of churches not paying taxes, to use that money to help the poor needy etc.

When I hear “mega church” I don’t quite associate the term with the size so much as the nature of it. A Catholic church in a metroplex can have a large amount of people, but I don’t assign the term megachurch to it because most people associate the term with churches run by preachers of questionable faith and teachings who teach profit and prosperity over Jesus’ word and take the Lord’s name in vain and fooling people with false warnings of demons in places they’re not and performing false miracles. Wolves in sheeps’ clothing who host Starbucks in their premises and don’t “Give to God what belongs to God.”

Thank you for this biblical answer. Its upsetting when Christians look at a mega church and automatically think it’s of the devil because of money. If you read your Bible yourself then you can know if the “mega church” preacher is teaching you wrong according to the Bible. The Holy Spirit lives in you and He will give you that knowing when something’s wrong. If a church is broke and can’t even pay for themselves, how can they be expected to help others. It’s the “love” of money, not the money. Why is it ok for an CEO to make trillions and that’s excepted, but not God’s children. Read Proverbs 13:22..... some know how to call it in.

It's because as Christians we are betrothed to Jesus. U cannot love the things of the world and love Jesus as well. That's spiritual adultery....we are a peculiar people, a holy nation of priests...not just a few elite people who run the organisation. Read about the rich man who asked Jesus to be his disciple. Look at the example of the apostles who gave up everything to serve the kingdom of God. We are one people not 44000+ denominations and corporate branded entities. 2nd most of these mega church's use use brand names,,,,they are what they say they are...e.g destiny church is destiny church and not part of the Church even if most of the people who go there love Jesus. U cannot serve 2 masters.....3rd most people that attend these institutions have no idea about even basic Christian life, cannot prophecy or know how to work with the Holy Spirit, heal the sick or cast out demons etc

Yes--I agree. Those who reject God and his church, and despise his followers are often not very logical or factual. Easy to lay out blanket criticisms, which means they wind up being the very hypocrites they so despise. Jesus is the answer to ALL of that. Can you imagine saying you won't go to church until you find the perfect one? You'd never go! Perfection was never a requirement! Jesus accepts all sinners, and brings good out of all our sins.

I think that the modern concept of a mega-church is more like a business model rather than a church. As such, this makes it more prone to embrace false or diluted teachings. Not only that, but this model has an appeal to smaller churches that want to grow.

The real question is can mega churches function as a church? I would say no. Because there is much less if any accountability in a large congregation. In mega churches thousands of people just come and go and are not a part of the church. It's like a big Christian Entertainment Center. For the most part that's what they are. Church should be about meeting people's need. Entertainment is not a need. One of the greatest needs is relationships. Much easier in a smaller church.

I have been part of a large church that had to grow its facility. So seven million dollars were spent on enlarging the building. That seven million was borrowed, and thus it became a huge focus for the session to recover that money through growth. Thus, the sermons became more and more "seeker" oriented, and those of us desiring solid food were getting hungrier and hungrier. My family finally left and went to a small church where the teaching is rich and nourishing.

Here are 2 areas Dr. Hershael York did not address : FIRST area >> 1 Corinthians 14:26 makes it clear every brother at a church meeting is to have an opportunity to contribute to the meeting -- this is not possible for a mega church. I'm not saying a mega church service is against the Scriptures. God has been and continues to be glorified in mega church services, but they don't allow for every brother to contribute -- so are mega churches effective in letting every brother contribute or not? SECOND area >> Matthew 18:15-20 makes it clear the third stage of the discipline process for a sinning unrepentant brother is to tell the entire church of the matter so the church can talk to the unrepentant brother (notice it does not fall only on church leaders -- the entire CHURCH is to be told of the matter and the entire CHURCH is to speak to the brother). Are there any mega churches that obey this command? Dr. Hershael York says what matters is obedience and effectiveness; and what we see are mega churches that are NOT EFFECTIVE in following 1 Corinthians 14 (notice verses 36-37 say what Paul is revealing about church meetings is the Lord's command) and THEY DON'T OBEY the entire teaching of Jesus about disciplining a sinning brother.

EyeToob you're right the flock is left out. People get so tired of a guy getting up in front and just giving his opinion or interpreting the Bible there is no real Fellowship. I've gone to Church's for a year and not go back and not one person calls or even knows that I'm really gone. There is no Intimacy in megachurches at all unless you're in The In Crowd. I think Christ talked about that putting the elite here you sit in this seat because you're special and tell the guy that's not special you go sit in the back you're not worth it. and I've given money and been involved with small groups volunteer so wasn't like I didn't try. And then also I've had pastors look at me when I'm volunteering and say you don't know what you're doing do you actually put me down because he's so much on his high horse that he thinks he can say and act whichever way he wants while he has his hand in my pocket I don't think it's supposed to be like that.

+EyeToob: The imperative (verbal command) in 1 Corinthians 14:26 is not "to have (something to contribute)" but, if someone has something to contribute, they are to always do so in a way that "builds up, or edifies, the assembly." Not everyone need contribute something.

Hopefully you've found a church with healthy fellowship and is open to letting the flock contribute to meetings. If you haven't, don't get discouraged. Keep seeking -- you will find a good church even if it requires moving to a new location. There is a movement of house churches that encourage New Testament meetings. You might want to look into it.

I went to a mega church. It was very effective because it had a lot more resources and human power to meet not only the needs of the local body, but the community and globally as well. There were various places for people to get plugged in and serve. It even dealt with sinning unrepentant brother both before the whole body and in it's small group. Needs can be meet in a mega church depending on how the mega church is set up. I've also been in a small church. I think it is all about the individual's preference.

I think there is a disconnect in the comments on how we define "mega churches". To me, it's just a church that has grown above a certain threshold, however that number of attendees is vague. Many here associate the term with televangelists like Olsteen. However, that packages more in the term than is warranted. This video is right on: obedience is the key factor, not size.

  • @mrnoedahl
    @mrnoedahl 4 роки тому +7

It's much easier to be effective and obedient in a smaller congregation. Churches should grow like a tree Branching out and splitting out. That way every church can grow yet stay small and effective. Also mega churches tend to feed the ego and the salary of the pastor. Hey look at me. Just like we have the United States of America, in which the country as a whole is divided up into individual states. So as to be more effective and more accountable to the people. The founders were very wise to do this. Separate yet United.

1:14... I have never heard this before, and it doesn't make sense. Both the Jewish leadership and Romans were trying to squash Christianity from the get-go. When exactly was the early church at liberty to hold regular meetings in the temple to the point they overflowed it's capacity?
With regard to size versus effectivity, the problem is too many people say these are the same thing. How do you get more people in the doors? By telling them what they want to hear, not necessarily what is Biblical. The early churches went off on all kinds of tangents in their teaching. That's why we have half of the NT... Paul and others trying to keep everything on the straight and narrow. The problem is these days we don't have Paul running around. When the teachings go sideways there's either no one to put it in check, or no one wants to because the errant teaching is bringing in more people, which is incorrectly viewed as being "effective".

Takes nothing into account of the differences between the Jerusalem church and those among the diaspora. Were the 3000 of Pentecost residents of Jerusalem or visitors from all over? How long would they have remained in Jerusalem while on annual pilgrimage? In talking about Church organisation, no mention is made of the plurality of leadership in early church. How can the biblical model be superimposed on the current church without considering the differences.

But God knows who are his and every believer should carefully evaluate their faith to see if it is genuine - the bible provides instruction on how to do this.

This is a shallow answer to a relevant question for modern, American evangelicals. Obedience and effectiveness? That's the Biblical standard? If so, how do we determine obedience and effectiveness? I would have thought checking in with Paul might be useful for his answer. Paul's view of the church raises serious challenges to the modern mega-church movement in the States. I would say that an ideal Pauline church cannot be a mega-church. I should add: "mega-church" is more than just an attendance figure. The word connotes a multi-faceted cultural phenomenon.

I think you are mistaken in your use of the word 'church' because the 'church' in Jerusalem means all the Christians in Jerusalem. I think what's unbiblical is this idea that we have lots of different 'churches' in one city. There is only one church of Christ, that is the followers of Christ. I think Christians need to get away from this kind of tribal affiliation to certain buildings, denominations and preachers and start fellowshipping with each other.

Dr. York... Love the discussion, diving back into the scriptural prescriptions given to us, re organizing TheChurch and accomplishing its task. Question: Drilling into your comment re the (multiple) 'churches' (even using the term 'plants', I believe)... 1. Are you really saying those are 'churches'? Or really just parts of TheChurch at Jerusalem? (Think of our American 'small-groups' -- we don't generally call them 'churches' per se. Right?). 2. More to the point: Do you see scriptural evidence of those 'churches' containing requisite leadership organization? That is, each contain (dare I ask, autonomous) a plurality of Elders? Plurality of Deacons?

I think his explanation of mega churches is wrong. The people that were gathered in Jerusalem were gathered there from many different parts of the world for the annual feast of Pentecost. It's like Muslims today gather in Meca for their annual pilgrimage. These people, when they were born again, hung around a little while to learn about this new faith before eventually having to return to their own cities and countries. They weren't Jerusalem dwellers. Good estimates of the entire population of Jerusalem put it at maybe 25,000 people. This was the headquarters of the Pharisees and the Jewish religion. As big as Pentecost was, everybody, didn't become a follower of Christ. We see that later, the Jewish leaders beat up Peter and John and told them not to preach Jesus (Acts 4-6). There's any indication that the Christians took over the temple or were allowed to use it to preach Christ. The facts he presents are not logical.

    • @kristine778
      @kristine778 2 місяці тому

Good point about the dynamics of Pentecost. It doesn't seem that there is any indication of Christians taking over the temple per say, in what he was saying. The temple was HUGE. Multiple gates. Multiple very, very large area for meeting, inside and outside. There were many areas where preaching could and did take place on a large scale. Eyewitness gospel accounts tell of Jesus preaching in the temple daily. [As well as it "being His tradition to read at the synagogue (public gathering)" when He was there.] Peter and the others following the same example of preaching at the temple as well. They could not stop the preaching of the Gospel.

First of all "mega" is relative. That aside the "church" in Acts (especially on the day of Pentecost) needs to be viewed as universal and not local - especially as 'local" is seen today. It would be impossible to have what is seen today in a local "mega" church. They didn't have facilities until Constantine. They met in homes - that at most would hold 8-10 people. So the church at Corinth for example - may have had 200 people but they met in various homes. The only biblical model we have is the book of Acts. Here we clearly see that as a church grew they multiplied outward - not inward. In fact the modern (post-modern) "mega" church is a phenomena that is only about 60-70 years old - simply because banks didn't start giving loans to churches until the 50's. A local church to take out a loan is not only presumptuous but unbiblical. The huge amounts of money spent on facilities is mind blowing. Is that really what God wants me to give to? What of the huge salaries of the "CEO's" of these mega churches? It is all out of whack - and far from what the Holy Spirit gave us in the word reading a "local church".
What is the purpose and function of the local church? The professor mentions often here the Great Commission. Evangelism is the individual witnessing of Jesus Christ. The local church doesn't run around like a pack of dogs witnessing - it is individuals. The local church is the educational program of believers. As believers we are to grow. That growth comes from learning what God says in his word and doing it. We have trials and struggles and stress - and through obedience of the word we learn how to respond favorably to the issues of life.
The mega church (again relative) is man centered - and entertainment focused. Just look at the ministry of the word - is the pastor-teacher expositionally teaching the text? Do we even know what that is in our day?

You are right my brother. The Lord has been blessing many of us with understading regarding the true nature of His Ekklessia/Qahal and the false deity that is the "Church". The Church serves itself, on the back of God's peoples labour; its just like ancient Egypt!!
But its about time. Time to go out of her once again to where God leads us. I do not know yet how or when or where to but we have to be VERY vigilant from now on. Dont miss his call. God bless you

Most churchs are not equipped for damaged people. Ironically these mega churchs do well.
My last church had 2 fornicator woman working for Jezebel. One was a newly divorced older gal shacked up with a newly divorced man from the music praise group. The other was a divorced pretty mom with 3 kids Shacked up with divorced man. the older gal tried suicide and asked her boy freind to inject poison into her. She died of cancer.
The young mom quit church and kicked the guy out for a few more suckers to ruin them too. That church folded.
I knew both these gals personaly and was pursued aggressively by both. It was the devils best trick.
The pasture didn't have a clue and all he did was smile to get approval.

Ecclesia in Scripture translate to a group of people! The problem with any church is you're not being taught what you need to know and thus are being mislead! What was Yeshua and his disciples doing while on this planet? They were following the Appointed Times of Lev. 23, the Sabbatical & Jubilee years of Lev. 25 plus the other Commandments found in Exodus!
Joseph and Mary when she was really close to giving birth to the Messiah were up in Bethlehem why? They were getting ready to celebrate the fall Feasts which include, Atonement, Sukkot and the 8th day all found in Lev. 23.
They couldn't find any places to stay in Jerusalem and went to Bethlehem and had to stay in a barn (so to speak) because all of Israel had come to Jerusalem and the surrounding towns to celebrate the Feasts because they are Commanded for all generations and forever!

Good illustration. God added to the Church daily. He's the same yesterday today, and forever. Mega churches are no sinful in themselves. Moses had the first Mega church: the tribes of Israel. If a church stays small, then that church needs help because something is wrong their manna. They have not turned their water into wine through their obedience.
On the other hand you can have clusters of the same small Church in different areas. It's about how God wants to strategically placed them.

The vid is on point. Good job. As for those who doubts the church just because the pastor has a gucci, have you read your bible? Abraham, isaac, jacob, joseph the dreamer, job, david, solomon, etc. These are just examples of wealthy followers of God and people in their time envy them. You see, God promises his people to be prosperous and that includes our pastors and if they are "corrupt" as you put it then don't worry because they'll either answer for it here or in hell because God sees and knows what we are truly after. Simple as that.

No, when Jesus went to pray ihe went to the house of God.
When Peter and others saw Jesus with Moses and Abraham, no one ever made an Idol of Moses nor Abraham to be placed into the house of God and was never a practice. Nor Jesus instructed it to be done.
It was a religious prohibition from God.
Hence, Jesus said I did not come to abrogate the law (Commandments of God given to Moses). Nor the prophets.
    Amen.

Kedar (second son of Ishmael) Let the inhabitants of the rock tremble with joy, let the crests of joy
shout forth from the top of the mountains!

Mohamed Sahloul The testimony of the Holy Scriptures is plain that Jesus is God in flesh (the Son) and the Holy Spirit is also God who speaks, guides, and dwells in believers.
Do you not claim that the Scriptures were once the Word of God that became corrupted by man? If the Bible was divine revelation from God but became corrupted as you believe, how can you say or believe the Quran could not also be corrupted? I believe God preserves His Word and that it is trustworthy and true. The testimony from the Scriptures about Jesus is truth.
