Billy, thank you for this video. I'm on your second book and it's been a wonderful journey learning Korean with you so far. I hardly ever comment on anything but this video really inspired me to write to you. It makes you genuine, super real, and connected with your audience. I'm actually Korean but lost my native tongue when I was a child. Now I'm in my 40's and determined to finally fill a void that I've been carrying all my life. Learning a new language isn't easy as you get older but I'm proving you can teach an old dog new tricks! Cheers to you and your lovely family!

Thank you so much and I hope that the boost in popularity of Korean culture helps with your book sales and subscribers😂😂😊😊😊

I love Korean too. I have been teaching myself. I can’t believe I just found your channel. I googled, “How Korea saved my life” because learning Korean and watching Korean shows has been helping me feel more fulfilled in this life. I love everything about Korea, but never been there, and have a couple of Korean friends I practice with.

oh my god is jeremy the cutest or what?!
i have always wanted to learn an eastern asian language since i'm truly fascinated by the culture. japanese was my first love, but unfortunately i couldn't progress much with self-study. i came across your channel several months ago to get ready to take korean classes at my college. after literally beating hangul in 90 minutes with your videos, i realized (while it does take a lot of work) korean was not as difficult as i expected. it actually became incredibly fun rather than scaring me. i still talk about you when people ask me how and where i started! thanks to your channel i fell in love with the language even more and managed to ace eight credits of korean in one semester. my 선생님s are proud :) cannot wait to learn more.
thank you so much for your dedication and love for your work billy. loving this language and culture more and more everyday. keep it up! much love.

Really inspiring! I've been learning Korean for a year and a half and sometimes I feel like I'll never be fluent. However, seeing the success you've had in Korean is really inspiring, I hope to be as good as you one day! 날마다 한국어를 연습해야 해요!

If you want, and if you work hard, you can get better than me. It all depends on how much you're willing to study and if you keep going without giving up. Practice as much as possible and when you look back in the future you'll see how far you've come :)

I am so touched! I would have never imagined you were married to a Korean girl and had a son! The more time passes, the more I believe this channel is the major source that's helping me understand Korean. Go on doing what you enjoy, it really helps a lot of young learners!!💛

  • @Padafee94

I'm also one of these people who started their Korean adventure with you (currently using your Korean Made Simple 1 book and videos to grasps the basics). I don't even have any goals nor groundbreaking plans why I want to learn Korean - I just wanted to try something new and made it fun.
My parents brought me up in a conservative way and before learning new languages, all I could hear is ''it's a waste of time to learn a language if you're not even going to use it''. They only ever approved of me learning English, but used coercion rather than encouragements to get me where I am. As you can imagine, it took me time to open a notebook and start practicing Hangul. Your videos truly helped me change my mindset and allow myself to see studying as fun! I don't see learning Korean as a means to an end, I see it as a journey, and having no plans related to its usage, I'm curious where it will take me :) Hopefully in a year I'll be able to visit Korea (I'm planning to volunteer at a language cafe in Busan and perhaps stay there for 2 months) and I'm sure by that time, my casual learning will bring me some hilarious and awkward stories to talk about :D
Thank you for sharing with us your journey and keep up the good work!

First of all, I’d love to thank you for all the great job you’ve done on your channel. Before I even started learning Korean, I’d been terrified of learning an Asian language, thinking it was way too strenuous and time consuming for a European. When I discovered your channel, I realized it was possible to master!
Speaking of Korean changing my life, I made Korean friends because of the skills I picked up. Not only are we close, they correct my grammar all the time. I also get discounts at the local Korean restaurant as I chat with the owner in the language. Last but definitely not least, here’s a funny/awkward story. I lived with a Spanish family for two weeks in August to improve my Spanish. It was a married couple in their 50’s, so I wanted to be really polite to someone who was older than me. I kept using formal pronouns for a week, although Spaniards rarely, if ever, use formal speech. That’s when I felt the impact Korean had had on me since I applied the logic of Korean in Spanish.
P.S. Jeremy is super cute! He reminds me of my brother when he was his age, haha.

Oh, bless you! I tried so hard to learn hangul from another UA-cam channel, and while it wasn’t awful, I couldn’t quite get it. I watched your 90-minute video about Hangul and it got me hooked! I’ve watched the last half a couple more times just to help, but it’s so amazing when I can just read a couple words out loud, then listen to it and my pronunciation is accurate! I’ve never learned another language before but Korean seems like the perfect one for me.

danchy thank you for your words of encouragement! :) my family and friends think I’m a bit crazy, but becoming bilingual has always been something I wanted to do and after exploring many different languages, Korean was the only one that I felt passionately about! I can’t wait to make them look foolish in a couple years when I’m speaking fairly well!

Seriously grateful for the work that you do. I work around Koreans on a weekly basis, and every time I mention to someone that I'm learning the language, they seem tickled to death that I'm even trying, despite grammar and pronunciation errors. It's gotten me many Korean friends who check my grammar and teach me little things about the culture.
Right now, I'm at a point where I'm less intimidated now when I go into ethnic food stores for 김밥 materials than I was three months ago, but ultimately, I want to be at least competent enough in the language to be able to not have to think about what I want to say, and just speak. Buying your book was step one! 감사합니다!

Hi Billy, I know my comment is more than two years late. I just saw this vid as a recommendation on my YT wall.
Anyway, my sis gave me a copy of your book. I highly enjoyed it. Honestly, I like how your book is presented. There are cultural facts about it. Your book is presented in such a way that is very empathetic with how non-Koreans could learn, being an outsider yourself. The pronunciation rules are still a struggle for me, but you make it easy to understand. I have another book, but the pronunciation rules were very complicated. I also bought your 2nd and 3rd volume of the book so I can study after I am done with the first. As for now, I am currently increasing my vocabulary because I realize that I cannot make various sentences without a varied vocabulary. I had to know more action verbs and descriptive verbs than just "to eat," to go," "to like," and "many."

Great video.! I learned Mandarin to an extremely fluent level just like you did with Korean and I’ve made so many good friends.. waiting for more opportunities! Might learn Korean :-)

So emotional! Omgosh! Thank you for sharing your story! I have to admit, I haven't purchased any of your books because I saw some pages of your first book and it looked too hard for me to do. (But I have watched quite a few of your videos! ;) ) I know ZERO Korean but I am so interested and want to learn it soooo much, it just seems overwhelming for me--and scary. But after watching this and also, seeing your live chat today, I have decided to buy your book tonight and see if my stupid brain can absorb anything and actually learn Korean! I have only seen a few videos but now, I am making it my mission to watch all of them! Keep up the excellent work and your wife and baby are sooooooo cute!!

lovinglanguages1 I have absolute faith you can somehow do it. Whether you learn it quickly or slowly, have fun with it...breath life into it...you know?

Thank you so much, Miguel! I tried learning Spanish once but gave up because I could understand more than I could speak it. I could never figure out how to construct sentences to say, even if I knew what was being said. So I just figured, language learning was not my thing but I still loved hearing different languages and then I heard Korean and fell in love! It hooked me and ! am dying to learn it! So I am going to do it, no matter how long it takes and not give up!

Very nice video! Actually I'm not learning Korean right now at all but as a linguist, you're giving me the input to learn it because you're such a very positive and friendly guy AND because you're passionate and I really feel this passion burning in you. So, thank you and if I start learning Korean, you'll be "responsible" for this!

    Aw…I loved this video!
I just started to learn Korean 3 months ago. Wasn’t planning on it. I was going to learn French, but my Daughter(22) wanted to learn Korean and I wanted to encourage her SO I’m learning Korean! I’m 53 so I’m old BUT I’m taking it slow. I’m amazed at how much this old brain is soaking up stuff! I am grateful I came across your channel! You have helped me to not completely rip all my hair out! BATCHIM!!!!! And I love how you explain stuff. You have made it easier for me to learn!
To a lifelong learning of an amazing language!
    Your fellow Korean learner, Stefanie.
