Captive Ring Baby Rattle - No special tools required! (Wood turning)

- In this video I make a wooden baby rattle toy from cherry wood. The captured ring rattles around on the shaft and gives a fun sensory experience for babies as they are learning their motor skills. I really enjoyed this project as a beginner project as I was able to test out making beads, vee cuts, tapers and of course, the captured ring!
It was pointed out to me in the comments that these style of captive rings have the possibility of breaking and then becoming a choking hazard. So if you make one, please make sure to only allow it to be used with adult supervision. If the ring looks fragile do not give it to your baby.
Here is the video I found most helpful when learning to use my skew chisel • The Skew Chisel with A...

Nice job on the captured ring! BUT… captured rings make for dangerous baby toys. Due to the grain direction they crumble easily and become a chocking hazard, especially when combined with slobber and teething. Some of the best wooden baby rattles I’ve seen have a cavity filled with something non-toxic, such as dried peas. Great video, though! Scott
Thanks Scott! I hadn't heard that before but that makes sense (and aligns with the few that exploded on the lathe😂) I'll make sure to only use it with adult supervision 🍻
@@TheGrantAlexander Exactly! They can be used by an adult as a “cat toy” for a baby, but just keep it out of the baby’s reach.
@@TheGrantAlexander BTW, making a child safe version would make an excellent follow-up project. #JustSayin
Good idea Scott, I made a dowel centre style rattle for my first son (ua-cam.com/video/qmaNF6l5eyE/v-deo.html) and I had thought of making a Marimba style rattle but all I had around the shot were ball bearings (bb gun shot) which didn't seem like a good idea. I might have to look for some dried peas on the next grocery trip!
Great instructional! I’ll be making this for the grandchild!
Awesome! Hope they love it 👍
Man you are getting good on the lathe
Thanks man! It has been fun learning so far! Lots more to learn though, 😂😂
I can't believe you just got this lathe! You look like a pro
Thanks Dean! I've watched a lot of videos😂😂
Very nice demo. Thanks for sharing.
@@ncwoodworker thanks for watching 😁
Nice turning Grant
Thanks Pascal, I hope all is going well down in the Philippines. Stay safe
The skew chisel used to frighten me but watching The Wood Yogi repeatedly convinced me that's it's the most versatile tool for the lathe. Great job Grant, very enjoyable. I'll have to try one of these...
The skew is still the scariest that I have used, but it is also the most versatile! I have actually done a few rattles with only the skew, but because I only have that one wide one it gets tricky to get under the ring to detach it and leads to more failures 😂😂
Wait that's not a caravan?! I just came here for the Bowler thing ;)
hahah! You are just jealous because you don't have a lathe!
You made that look so easy as if you are an old pro at turning. I happened across the comments and saw how this is unsafe for kids. That is a bummer. I say use a food grade epoxy and cover it all up. LOL!
Thanks! It has been fun learning so far. I'm not too concerned about my son using these rattles, I will just make sure to never leave him alone with it 😁
Hi Grant,
I also bought a lathe today. And I need to increase my wood turning experience. A great toy for your second beautiful baby. Now I learned how to make a rattle for a baby on a lathe. It could be a novice job. But I'm more of a beginner than you :-) Because I just bought a new lathe. :-) Thank you for sharing. I wish your family healthy and happy days. All the best. Cheers Grant.
I'm excited to see what you make Mehmet! It's fun to add the lathe to the list of tools that you have in the shop. Hope you have fun with it! Cheers, Grant
Brilliant! I know you're going to make some really terrific stuff Mehmet!
Great sanding trick!
Thanks!
Great job! I've been doing lathe works as well...so much fun.
Thanks Rob! I am definitely enjoying the lathe, just wish I had a heated shop 😂😂 felt like -33C the other day ❄️❄️
Nice work. I always thought captured rings were like magic. Good job showing the process.
Thanks Dave! Now you have seen behind the magic trick are they still just as magical?😂
Yes!
@@davebauerart good to know 😁
Very cool bud! It's so satisfying watching the wood melt away on the lathe!
Thanks man! I agree and it's even more fun to do in real life. You should get a little mini lathe🍻
@@TheGrantAlexander I definitely want one - need to find the space for it though first!
You have the space, you just need to clear some of that leather working stuff away😂😂
@@TheGrantAlexander Fair point haha
How's she goin'? Nice job making this rattle and good instructions too!! I hope the baby likes it!!! Take 'er easy!!!
Thanks Mike! Was a fun project for sure😁 baby can't hold it yet but he approves😁
Some lovely skew work there mate, nice job!!
Thank you! I have been practicing 😊
You make it look so easy!
Thanks! As they say, practice makes perfect (and if you don't have time to practice, just edit the mistakes 🤣)
Thanks for the video. I haven't had much luck with a captive ring tool. Seems to make a lot of sense to try it with the carbide!
Good luck! I had some luck with just the tip of a skew chisel as well, but it was easier with the carbide and ended with less wrecked rings🤣
The skew chisel looks like a butt-clench-level tool, but that's probably just appearances. I've never seen a drive spur before. That was a nice little nugget. Two lathe things I didn't know that I learned today.
No it isn't just appearances, the skew is a butt clench tool for sure! Super easy to ruin your project with the improper technique, but the results when used correctly are soo nice! With a sharp skew you don't even need to sand most wood!
Very nice work. Turned out amazing!
Thank you very much! 😁
Man, it looks so fun to work with a lathe... And your work looks good! Keep on.
Thanks so much! It was a really fun project 😁
@@TheGrantAlexander My father has a large old lathe... 30 years old. He never used it for carving but only for painting rounded railing legs. Maybe one day I'll try to use it for carving :)
@@XDIY nice! Looking forward to it👍
Nice job great video thanks for sharing
Thanks man! Much appreciated and thanks for signing up on the clamp patreon 🧡🗜️
Great video, thanks.
Thanks Marc! 🍻
Cool video Grant! I really want to learn wood turning some day.
Thanks Scott! You really should you have learnt everything else 😁😁
Awesome video and in great detail. Will definitely give this one a go 👍
Thanks! I hope to see the pics over on Instagram 😁
Super boulot c'est top 💪💪
Merci beaucoup! C'était un projet amusant!
Great skew chisel turning Grant. You showed some good techniques and skills. That’s something I really haven’t gotten into. I’m working on perfecting my techniques with my gouges including sharpening them first. Since I learned years ago on traditional tools I haven’t tried carbide tools yet either. They do look like they’re fun to use.
Thanks Don! I feel like the carbide tools are a bit too easy! Almost like cheating. But the skew and the gouge (when properly sharpened) leave a much nicer finish. When I do the skew right I don't even need to sand. No matter what I do with a carbide tool I start at 120 grit minimum😂
@@TheGrantAlexander that’s what I’ve heard about carbide. I can get a fantastic finish just using a spindle roughing gouge. It just takes a very light touch.
I’m glad you’re enjoying turning. Maybe sometime we can figure some kind of collaborative effort turning something.
@@wb_finewoodworking that would be fun!
Such a cool project. Keep up the great work!
Thanks! You keep changing your name I'm always confused 😂😂
@@TheGrantAlexander uggg.. I know. I have commitment issues with my channel name lol!
Well it makes me check out your channel home page everytime, so there is that😂😂

아기한테는 정말 특별한 장난감이네요. 만드는 영상이 보기 좋아요🤗👍.
매우 감사합니다!
Nice work! Thanks for the video.
Thanks Tom! I appreciate you checking it out 😊
👍 nice job.
Thanks! 🍻
Awesome work and great instructions Grant! Have a great day you too 🍻
Thanks Boris! It was a fun project. Hope your 2022 goes well 🍻
C'est un cool petit projet ! 👍😉
Merci JD! 🍻🍻
Well done!! That explains what that big chisel is for 👍🏼
Thanks Christy! I have seen them before as well and never really knew how to use them! It is really an art, but when it works well the finish is really nice!
Great job mate, short to the point and quick as well. Love the commentary on this one, it was an added bonus!
Thanks Harki! It's always a hard balance between showing too much and not enough, I'm happy to hear your comment as it's exactly what I was going for! 😁
Good looking rattle there, Grant. And some nice tips in between, getting that ring in the middle is no easy feat.
Thanks Suj! I was surprised how easy it was when I first tried it, but it appeared to be beginner's luck as the next few didn't work out so well😂😂 but it was a good learning experience 😁😁
Awesome job Grant. You have gotten really good really quick.
Thanks Rory! I watched a lot of videos while the little one slept in my arms, so I will give the credit to the dozens of people that I watched! lol.
something weird happened at 2.45 where you talk about a tool to shape the ring but the video allready shows you sanding the finished loose ring. I got confused there for a minute and went " oh , guess he wont show how to detach the ring " which is why I watched in the first place ;) But then it was explained and all was well ;)
Also: keep clamp
length is arbitrary, I listen for as long as the episodes interest me, which is all the way through mostly
topic schmopic. Do specific ones from time to time, but I rarely choose an episode based on the topic.
Thanks Yves! I am glad that my explanation cleared everything up! lol. Appreciate the comments about CLAMP I have shared them with the boys.
I'm new to turning and I recently turned a gobblet with a floating ring on the shaft. It never occurred to me to use double sided tape to sand. Hope you don't mind but I'm going to run with that option from here out. Thanks
I don't mind at all! I learnt that technique from someone else and put it in the video to share 😊 Happy turning!
Have you tried tape after you part the ring. Painters tape the ring wile you finish the piece
Yes I have done that before. Good tip 👍
Wonderful work Grant - I would put this above beginner grade! The techniques are eally well demonstrated really well in this film.
May I take this opportunity to wish you and yours a happy, contented and safe New Year!
Thanks Eryk! It was a fun project with lots of different techniques to practice 😊Thank you for the well wishes, I hope your 2022 is wonderful!
@@TheGrantAlexander Should have checked for tautolgy and spelling in my comment . . . my one working eye is not too good today - are you any good at optical work? LOL! Hope to be back in my workshop soon after hospital stuff.
@@erykfreethinker7147 i don't think you want me working on your eye, I don't think I can sand away any mistakes I make😂😂
