    Thank you for your instruction on tying up a mule. I would surmise that this measurement would work for horses also.

      Also generally works with goats as well. Even though goats are smaller that was about the distance ratio I would use when I used halters to tie ny goats (I never tied my goats by their collars unless it was just to adjust for a moment and I was always within reach, even then I preferred to just have someone hold their leads in that case). A lot of people, even some others who raised goats, would tell me I tied them too close and needed to give them more slack. I would explain that if I gave them any more slack then if they got startled they could either get their neck twisted over their back if they spun around, get the lead around their throat, or get a leg caught. All of which could cause serious or potentially fatal injury. About the worst that could happen tieing them at the length I did was them bruising their sides or at worst slipping and getting slightly hung up, both which would be very minor injury at worst.
