I"m betting the Pilot was proud he managed to land that thing on such a small strip. This would of course been before he realized he was in the wrong place lol.
I’ve done approaches into MacDill AFB for runway 23 many times and I can see how the AF pilot may have mistaken the wrong airfield for landing. Peter o Knight’s runway 22 lines up nearly perfectly with runway 23 at MacDill and it’s easy to confuse the two runways, especially if you’re doing a visual approach on final for runway 23 at MacDill, aren’t familiar with the area, and the Peter O Knights airfield being uncontrolled. Glad to hear the pilots landed safely and were able to take back off again. Definitely a call sign review is in order lol.
A similar incident happened in 1977 involving 4/F-105s transiting to MacDill. The weather was partly cloudy with showers in the area around Tampa Bay. MacDill had been using Runway 04 but due to the wind shift, from the SW, Runway 22 become the active runway about the same time the flight of 4/F-105s were inbound. In 1977, MacDill had a PAR approach but couldn't get their equipment aligned quickly enough for the inbound F-105s so, the flight lead requested a Visual Approach to runway 22 from Tampa Approach! Tampa Approach approved the Visual Approach, the flight lead reported the runway in sight, and the fight was handed off to MacDill Tower for the Visual Approach. The flight checked in with MacDill tower for the Visual Approach, however due to the low visibility, the tower controller stated to the flight lead, "not insight, check wheels down, wind ___, cleared to land runway 22 MacDill." The flight lead responded, "Runway 22 in sight, base, gear down, cleared to land rwy 22!" As noted in the video above, the runway at MacDill is nearly 12,000 ft but, the runway at Peter O' Knight is only about 3,000 ft ...and the F-105 would use about 2,000 ft just to get the wheels on the ground due to their speed! When the flight lead landed and realized his mistake, he unfortunately had already deployed his drag chute. Flight lead quickly dropped his chute, instructed the other 3 aircraft to go-around, and executed a touch and go! The flight proceeded to MacDill and landed uneventful, minus one drag chute for flight lead which had to be retrieved from Peter O' Knight ground crew. A note of caution for both MacDill Tower and Tampa Approach: Never assume the pilot has the correct runway 22 in sight for a Visual Approach for these 2 runways. Because of the close proximity and the runway alignments for MacDill and Peter O' Knight, it's very easy to make the mistake and land at the wrong airport. While I was working at MacDill Tower in the late 70s, we would have at least 10 civilian aircraft land Runway 22 at MacDill each year and the pilot thought he/she was landing at Peter O' Knight. Never assume the pilot has the correct runway in sight for a Runway 22 Visual Approach and I'm positive this is exactly what happened to the C-17! In 1977, it was the responsibility of the Tampa Approach Controller to monitor the aircraft to it's destination but failed to do so in this case but, the tower controller correctly stated to the 4/F-105s "Not in Sight, cleared to land" for the Visual Approach since the pilot stated he "had the runway in sight!" On a side note: While working traffic on a busy Friday at MacDill in 79', with F-16s everywhere, a DC-10 cleared for a Visual Approach to rwy 36L at Tampa, landed on rwy 04 at MacDill in the middle of a severe thunderstorm!

Agreed, and we should credit the construction firm that made the runway able to handle something exponentially heavier than what was requested and what it was probably certified for. One of my kids is studying civil engineering and has gotten me to appreciate the complexity behind any flat piece of asphalt or concrete.
The crews are use to landing at shorter runways and can take off from that airport easily, but some of the equipment may have to be removed depending on what they was carrying.
Still tho, you gotta imagine when they tell the AF control tower they are coming in for landing and control tower doesn't see them anywhere near then why didn't they speak up?

The Pilot's mission involved if he was to get shot down he was to inject himself with a poison. Turns out, Gen. Mattis (!!) was on board the flight - on way back from Italy. The pilot first mistook a 3rd airport (NOT Peter O Knight) for McDill...and two other crew 'corrected' him (incorrectly) saying no, that's Peter O Knight when in fact that airport was Tampa Executive airport. So when they saw Peter O Knight, due to a very long flight and fatigue, and thinking they'd just passed Peter O Knight (when in fact it was Tampa Executive they'd just passed), they assumed this one was McDill AFB when actually it was the REAL Peter O Knight. Gen. Mattis evidently laughed it off saying no harm done, he'd made many mistakes as a young military man, put in a good word for the pilot saying it is much ado about nothing (super cool of him to do so). Anyway that's a bit more information for whomever is interested. Here's a link to the story... www.tampabay.com/news/military/macdill/air-force-blames-pilot-fatigue-for-c-17-landing-4-miles-from-macdill/1272014
Did you say C17? Oh yes these planes can and will take off on short runways that's what they have been doing in combat. But it's Fox so let's sensationalize the story first.
This same thing happened with a Southwest flight near me in Missouri a few years ago. A flight from Chicago to Branson (BKG) landed at the small general aviation airport rather than the large regional airport. Both airports are on the same compass radial coming from Chicago but the small one is 3 miles closer. If a person didn't familiarize themselves with the layout of the area beforehand it could be very easy to see a runway in front of you and assume that was it. They were in contact with the tower, cleared for landing, and then suddenly disappeared. Took a few minutes to figure out why the tower lost them. Both pilots were reprimanded, they stripped the airplane of all extra weight, bused the passengers to the other airport, and a few days later had one of their senior pilots come in for a pretty dramatic short field takeoff. The drama was enhanced by the cliff that sits at the end of the general aviation runway.
The C 17 is designed for short takeoff by directing engine thrust onto the flaps. Empty her out and put just enough fuel for a short hop and she'll fly out of there no problem!
+Soundmman 1 Yep, strip out every last possible gram of weight on board, and just minimum fuel. If in doubt, wait for a change in the weather with a good headwind, and she'll take off on a dime.
+Brad Wake The C-17 can make a STOL take off in about 1200 ft with minimum fuel and no cargo. It is designed to land/take off on unimproved, minimally controlled airfields under 2500 ft. length -- with a load. The flaps behind the engines extend further, vectoring the thrust downward, creating a lot of extra lift. The statement that a jet that size can't take off from that short an airstrip does not hold true for the C-17. Peter O. Knight airport has a 3500 ft strip. About three times what it needs to rotate out at a good angle of climb -- unloaded.
I'm not even remotely military, and even I know that is how the C-17 can operate. Hell, She can fly out of there quicker than a few Saab STOL jets I know.
"Since when did the air-force start using that casual looking planes? Look! There are even civilians boarding the planes!" "I think this is the wrong airport man" "Nah we are good"
Why is this even in my recommended is the real question. I mostly watch Darksouls, cities skylines and rainbow six siege, and this shit ain't looking like none of that
Large USAF cargo planes, like the c-17 and c-5, often need longer runways because of the massive potential weight of their loads. For the same reason, they are also designed for insane amounts of lift. What that means is that these planes can take off after a disproportionally short distance if carrying minimal payload. The C-5 was even designed to be able to take off and land in rough and undersized forward air bases despite being the largest airplane for much of its service.
I don’t think the C-17 can be fitted with JATO or RATO rockets for short field takeoffs like some earlier planes either, I assume because they designed it with so much lift and power to do short field landings and takeoffs it didn’t actually need them anymore. I’m always amazed when these planes fly above my house because they fly pretty low and slow compared to airliners giving the impression they are flying incredibly slow.
@@alexburke1899 They are also designed to fly great at very slow speeds so they can accurately and safely drop parachute loads, like airdropped supplies or even vehicles. If you drop those from too much height or speed you risk wind moving them to an unsafe area.
There was a similar problem when a Boeing 747-8F landed at a small airport, like this, about 10 miles from where it was supposed to go to. They took almost all the fuel off, all the cargo plus one or three other things off, bought in some highly experienced test pilots and crossed their fingers. The bird took off with runway to spare.
I remember when I was in the Air Force I'd have to fly as a passenger in a C-141 Starlifter from Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma to Rhein-Mein, Germany, then down to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A couple of times the air crew let me watch what the pilots were doing..I'd have to climb a little ladder and would stand behind the cockpit. While flying over the Atlantic(in the middle of a 10 hour flight) I was amazed how busy both pilots were. They had their flight plans and maps kind of like when we opened a map on a long road trip in our station wagon. They seemed to have a much tougher job than what I expected. I can't thank the air crew, crew chief, and pilots enough for doing such a great job, they always treated us passengers with such professionalism. I can see how pilots can land at the wrong airport near a military base, their job is way harder than it looks!
Been a passenger of dozens of C141s and C5s, but once I got to fly in the jump seat of a C130 from Massachusetts to Andrews AFB. Very fun. Btw, much of the fun is bc on cargo planes beside the C5 in my experience, it's nice to finally see out a window... any window. 😂

More on the lines of "when you don't use at least Siri to guide you." They most likely got clearance for a visual approach and land rwy 22. Unfortunately, KTPF has a rwy 22, too.
@@Simon-bg3st Reminds me of a post where someone in a car was trying to get somewhere and the route they got would have made them drive through an IKEA
This aircraft has whats called (Vortex Generators)" Propulsive Lift System" that uses diverted engine exhaust and mechanical blowers under the wings that create artificial lift to take off on VERY short runways. All they have to do is get ride of the cargo, seats and non-required fuel and it's off the ground quick. Might not get much climb in the beginning but at least they are out of there.
I say take all the classified crap out of it and turn the plane into a restaurant or something like that Call it the mistaken lander or something like that
When I was a cop at Beale, we had a Cessna land at night-after the tower closed. He just taxied through the restricted area and parked next to the U-2s. He said he thought he as at the municiple airport. We searched him, checked his license, then sold him some fuel and sent him on his way.
Back in 84, the U-2s where black and the TR1 swere white (or vice versa). Since we were in peacetime, during the weekends, the flightline was emplty except for the cops and the fire department.

Yeah, unload it and with minimum fuel, why it can takeoff going backwards even, or standing still. It's a C17 we're talking about here
I'm not even remotely military, and even I know that is how the C-17 can operate. Hell, She can fly out of there quicker than a few Saab STOL jets I know.
so what happened in the end?

It's impossible to land at Mckenzie Airfield with the cargo plane or jet, there's stuff to make you blow up on both sides.
you can land anything there besides the cargo plane
Yep, it was no problem ua-cam.com/video/805M1svwp_8/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
@@alexburke1899 They are also designed to fly great at very slow speeds so they can accurately and safely drop parachute loads, like airdropped supplies or even vehicles. If you drop those from too much height or speed you risk wind moving them to an unsafe area.
the c-17 is designed for short takeoffs, even with large loads. it was designed this way fro short airstrips in warzones.
Test pilots definitely a different breed.

And then UA-cam decided after 9 years it's finally time for me to watch this.
