As Daniele Garozzo (2016 Olympic Champion and 2021 Olympic Silver Medalist) has retired in 2024, all members of both teams have retired. This was Garozzo's first World Championships as a member of the Italian Senior Men's Foil National Team.
Italy had defeated Russia in the Bronze Medal Bout of the 2014 Kazan World Championships the year prior. Around this time, reigning Olympic Champion Italy was losing its mantle as the most dominant foil team on the circuit. Team USA has beaten them in a few match ups, while France and China were both also becoming stronger opponents. France had won the 2014 Kazan World Championships, while China was the team that defeated Italy in the semifinals at the same event.
Both Andrea Baldini and Andrea Cassara were losing the form they used to have. Valerio Aspromote was switched out to Daniele Garozzo as a member of the national team this season.
This was Russia's first World Championships final for at least over 2 Olympic cycles. Dmitry Rigin got good this year and won the 2015 Havana Grand Prix, and Artur Akhmatkhuzin won a Bronze in the individual event at the 2015 World Championships, but they are still not favored against Italy.
