@@TiagoCatarino I do enjoy building with System bricks, mostly 18+ sets. The Creator Expert cars designed by Mike are absolutely brilliant and the build is very enjoyable, sometimes they have more functions than a few Technic sets... I even build Superhero and City occasionally, there're simply themes that don't motivate me at all, like Harry Potter 😜
Technic is more interesting for me as I enjoy the sturdy structure, things "work" there, I'm not brick building a statue (khm well there are exceptions 😂). I enjoy gears, mechanisms, stuff with function and playability beyond storytelling & minifigs 🙃

Having grown up with bionicle and technic I actually find modern technic sets a lot easier to disassemble. There's something about the pins or maybe the liftarms now that just feels a lot smoother as they attach, detach and rotate, though it comes at the sacrifice of clutch power.
I remember having an absolute nightmare trying to disassemble the "Robot" technic set (8852) from 1987 after it was gifted to me used so I think that there has been a trend towards softer pins in technic sets.
That said I think my hands have callused well from all the technic-ing to the point that I don't really register it anymore.
If you ever need someone to disassemble your technic sets I would be happy to oblige 😜

  • @razorwireclouds5708

I think this is an habit of "old days" LEGO builders, I remember from my childhood, no LEGO set was kept intact for long because sure they were fun, but I could use the parts to build Robotech ships, or Transformers substitutes etc. That was quite true for old Technic sets, because they were not so complex and also had alternative models both in the instructions and on the box to inspire builders. I get it that with such modern Technic sets it doesn't make any sense though :D

Yeah i feel the same, old Technic sets was far better in terms of the building experience, offered a great balance between function with the fun of building using the interlocking features from system pieces, which that experimentation was a lot more fun, you could take things apart without shredding the skin off your fingers. I also do not like how modern Technic sets basically hide all the functions away, while the old ones kept it open for the most part which made the sets far more interesting.

What is awesome about the lego technic set is “for the kids”. I have 3 kids 11 and under and they love lego but the creator line of vehicles will fall apart quickly when played with, the technic line is great because they can be even dropped and not fall apart. I used despise this line until my kids started to play with Lego and then I realized the technic line is the best for them.

  • @FireManiac58

My favourite technic sets are typically the sets that aren't technically technic, but underneath standard bricks use technic to create complex mechanisms hidden away. Like the steering on the creator expert vehicles. I wish they did more with that idea, making full sets with lots of functions with a standard-brick "chassis" or outer shell

I am a Technic (and motorcycle) fan. I haven't build this, but I have built the similarly-sized Ducati Panigale V4R (42107). Presuming that this BMW set is similar to the Ducati, the impressive thing about the shifter is that it is multi-speed. Put the gear lever in the down position, turn the rear wheel, and you can see it is moving the engine's pistons at one speed. Put the gear lever in the up position, turn the wheel, and you see it moving the pistons at another speed (higher gear ratio). Put the gear lever in the middle position, turn the wheel and the engine doesn't move (the gearbox is in neutral). The totally geeky motorcycle thing is neutral is between first and second gear on real motorcycles.
But the Ducati is only 600-ish parts, much less than the BMW, so maybe a less annoying build. It may sense that a BMW set would be so complicated, just like their bikes.
Anyway what I have found to be the most annoying LEGO build was the International Space Station. I hear the colosseum build is pretty bad, but I haven't done it myself.

The hardest Technic sets I've built were the red Super Car from 2011 and the blue/black Race Jet. Some of the instructions left me scratching my head, and I've been playing with the advanced- style sets since I was 6.

I've liked technic since I was 9 as I am a gearhead at heart. What I like about it now it that for the most part, some of the technic sets result in highly playable toys my 3.5 year old can sort of participate in building (he likes the connectors and the panels as much as his brick legos) while its a giant jigsaw puzzle for me, who is still a gearhead. Beware the remote control stunt track racer! Way too fragile. Had to glue it together to make it survive impacts.
My son loves motorcycles so I might get this. It looks like it can survive a pre-schooler.

I just finished building it and I gotta agree, it’s quite a shame they hid away the engine and transmission components. At least in the Bugatti you are able to see the engine moving and you can see the transmission shifting if you look very closely. That’s probably my only complaint with the set though. That and having to place down so many stickers lol

  • @pewpewdragon4483
    @pewpewdragon4483 2 роки тому +2

Really excited when I first saw images of it, but upon closer inspection, the entire BMW aesthetic unfortunately comes from the stickers alone; its just a white motorcycle without them which is a bit disappointing. And as for the engine block, it really doesn't look all that great, the contours are a bit messy due in part to the nature of technic's colourful pins and whatnot but also to the blockiness of the beams. Quite happy to see more 'realistic' motorcycles from Lego though. Kind of prefer a smaller scale, but I also think the size of individual pieces is actually decent at this scale.

o my God, Tiago, I feel so understood! It's such a comfort to me, to hear, that even former Lego Designers struggle with technics! To be fair, I remember being surprised with how complicated the Ducati Lego set was. I’ve done some of the bigger technic and Lego sets, so when I got the Ducati I didn’t think it would be a challenge. But due to the strange geometry and limited space to fit all the mechanisms, the Ducati was a fairly complex build. I’m guessing this won’t be much different from that lol

Actually, great review! Maybe not so much about the set, but more so about the system. I am a Technic fan, though more one of the old, brick based days when it indeed was all about function and less about looks. To be fair, I do think this set looks great, and even disregarding the new pieces it would be nearly impossible to build something like this the old way. But too much of it relies on a ridiculous amount stickers (especially considering the very high price), and indeed, when it's done you hardly see anything of the cool mechanisms underneath. And I do very much recognize your complaints about the building experience, with the current system you often hardly have an idea what you're building, everything only comes together when you're finished, it almost feels like magic. Massive respect for the set designers capable of thinking all of this through, but a lot of it feels so counter-intuitive.
That said, nowadays sets actually are a lot easier to take apart than in the old days. Yes, you might need the manual to un-build it. But that's just a slight inconvenience compared to the horrible black pins from the old days. The horror....The horror... 😅

I've never been a MC guy, but when LEGO did the 8860 homage for the Technic 40 years anniversary I had to get all three donor sets and build them first, and I found the motorcycle the most satisfying build (despite an "evil" assembly at the core which requires pliers to disassemble). That led me to get the Ducati, and again I was not disappointed (though I really dislike all the stickers, so those stayed untouched - it looks nice without them too). This new BMW is certainly on my wishlist, but that list is quite crowded, so who knows...

I built that huge orange Porsche a few years ago and found the design intriguing. I also built the heavy haul copter and likewise, so I have a bunch of these sets to do. But I do agree with you, after all that amazing work on the gearing and switches, so detailed, so well thought-out, to just hide it was a disappointment. So I have to explain that, yes, the gearing works and it even works to the almost identical ratio as the production vehicle, but I can't demonstrate.

I completely agree with your feelings: I miss the "old days" where Technic bricks were just LEGO bricks with holes, plus special parts like gears, studs etc. Many Technic pieces moved to the standard LEGO sets to do some nice things (BlackTron vehicle for example). Nowadays Technic is an isolated world, I see no way of using those fancy parts in a traditional LEGO set, I even see it difficult to disassemble something like this to do... what? All Technic sets were fairly simple, they showed the mechanisms and that was part of the fun, new sets with loads of specialized pieces are just a way to build a very complex, very "realistic", very "un-reusable" toy.
