    I am a recreational diver and the date window on my dive watch is a must. Reason being is that I need to include the date when filling out my dive log, usually on vacation where I've lost track of what day it is out on the ocean. Especially since I don't usually bring my phone along for fear of losing it overboard.

    No Russell, the dial colour vs the hands color do not add to visibility. Take it from a 20 year scuba diver. (Haven't been under the water for the past 20 years, but you know what I mean.😂) The Doxa was one of my first more costly dive watches after quite a few Seiko divers and it was disappointing enough for me to sell it and put it towards a Seamaster (which I never wear diving in case I scratch it😂). Colours disappear under water Russell, even the colourful fish unless you're actually shining a light on them. Water has a major effect on colour as you go deeper. The Doxa orange will be a darkish grey in low light under water and it's difficult to see the hands. Lume was very important in the days before dive computers and I cannot understand how the Doxa became a famous dive watch...unless they paid a lot of money for marketing. It's crazy that they still haven't improved it, but I suppose it doesn't matter any more.

    • @waffle911
      @waffle911 Місяць тому +13

      Yeah, Doxa divers never made any sense to me, either. No lume pip on the bezel for tracking elapsed time in darkness, disappointing lume overall, hour hand that kills legibility in general use, and what was Jaques Cousteau actually looking for when he concluded the bright orange was the optimal color of all the colored dials they were testing for dive watches? How is this in any way a "professional" diver?

    • @jaykwonzzz
      @jaykwonzzz Місяць тому +3

      @@waffle911 Devil's advocate: what color would work better? Doesn't white disappear the same way? I don't dive much, so I have no idea. I will say that perhaps it was more along the lines of "orange disappears less and is more contrasted out of the water".

    • @knottheory79220
      @knottheory79220 Місяць тому +1

      My understanding was divers actually used for diving were always these bright colors because most watches have black hands on black dials, which is completely illegible under water. If the bright orange goes to a dark gray, the black dial would be completely unreadable under basically any underwater conditions right?

    • @ericb8888
      @ericb8888 Місяць тому +14

      Blue is the last colour visible at depth , hence Rolex Chromalite.
      DOXA chose orange as they tested it in Lake Neuchatel which has muddy sides and bottom and orange shows up well in shallow silted water .

    I've got about 15 watches I tried to sell last year. Sadly, the whole exercise of trying to sell, was as successful and enjoyable as trapping my dingly-danglies... in a car door.

      Agree with ya @thatguy. Trying to deal with us/other watch geeks is a lesson in insanity and frustration. Everytime I deal with one I can feel my IQ getting lower. What's that old saying about doing something and expecting a different result?
      Whenever I get a new watch I have already made peace with the fact that they are going to collect dust on a shelf and will be probably be thrown in a box and donated to Goodwill after my death. No way, and I mean no way, will I waste time or expect family members to have to deal with watch geeks.

    Congratulations. That's one cool looking watch, and a classic. It definitely does not look too large (unlike the many overly large smartwatches you see these days).
    In-house movements are highly overrated, especially for smaller brands that only recently started making their own movements. An ETA 2824 is pretty much bulletproof because there are a lot of them out there, and any commonly occurring problems have been fixed decades ago.

  • @HydrogenAlpha

    Having an ETA movement is a plus, not a minus. Who wants to get robbed every few years when it's time for a service?

    Welcome to the Doxa fam! The sub 300 was my grail as well and first Swiss watch. Since then I've gotten a Rolex GMT, a Submariner, and a Speedy. And yet, the Doxa still gets the most wrist time by far. If I had to only keep one and price wasn't a factor, I'd definitely keep the Doxa.

    Hard to argue, I recently bought a Clive Cussler and it is soooo comfortable, but I have the wetsuit extender that I sometimes ease by one notch during the day. The small hour hand makes it harder to read as a daily wear, until you get used to it. Haven’t dived with it yet, so underwater legibility for the custom dial has yet to be tested, but rest assured that there are few more comfortable divers… that includes my 3 Seikos, Seamaster, Sea-dweller and Vostok. Enjoy your Doxa, MWC!

  • @Specdrum89

    Congrats on the 300-grailwatch achievement Russell! My grail was the 300T, which I got at the start of January, based on Your lovely review of all 3! I was a bit conflicted on which to get, the 300 COSC or the 300T, and i decided to go with the 300T. Only downside that the 300T has (in my humble opinion) is the bracelet and the clasp - bracelet widens to 22-23mm after the 20mm lug and tapers down to 20mm, thereafter the clasp is 22-24mm and HUUUGE on my wrist. It is fantastic when lying on the table and on other peoples wrists, but I am currently stuck with a nato strap until I find a better tapered BOR-bracelet - It feels like I am wearing my dads watch or one of those MMA-Invictas because of the huge wide bracelet..
    I have ordered a BOR-bracelet from everyone's favorite uncle (UncleSeiko) to try and make it fit my 300T, and I will just have to live with a generic pressed clasp with no micro-adjustments.
    If Doxa made a BOR, with taper from 20mm to 18-16mm, I would buy it on the spot!

    Very entertaining video Russell. But you're not quite right in your assumptions about the visibility of the watch in marine diving conditions. I am a retired German navy diver and began my career just as dive computers were coming into usage. I've used many divers watches and professional divers preferred generally to only use ISO rated watches like Seiko when they want a failsafe to the dive computer. Also some Orient and Citizen watches had this ISO rating and were popular as a minimum level of luminous display is essential. The Doxa watches, although well known and well marketed in the past by some famous diving folks are not really suitable for serious diving. The luminous display is simply not bright or lasting long enough. A watch face regardless of color will lose visibility very soon. It is a very nice watch though, and is probably ok for snorkeling in bright water, but the low light will make it unviable. Please excuse if my english is not perfect as it's not my native language. I would think that 99.9% of the Doxa wearers are possibly not diving people, or if they are they won't be relying on these watches when going to deep water or exploring dark environments like shipwrecks which is still a favourite activity of mine.

    Just bought the sub 600t on a whim, I wanted a less expensive daily watch. Something for the beach, pool, or traveling. My current collection is made of 3 grand seikos. So a solid dive watch built like a rock it feels and an awesome rubber strap and of course in orange seemed like the perfect beater watch for me. And I love it so far. I was between the 300 and 600t and liked the more 80s design of the 600t.

    Welcome to the club! I have had a 1200t pro for 12+ years. Love it, wears like nothing else, my wife endorsed it- orange is her favourite colour! The bracelet on yours is great with the taper. Have a sub200 and also love it. With the date, it’s what they had in the 60s so just go with it, I have other vintage divers that have it as well. Top choice in my eyes. Who doesn’t love a BOR??

    Great watch, I got my Doxa sub after seeing it in the film Sahara and reading the Clive Cussler Dirk Pitt books. Absolute beast of a watch 😊

    Absolutely awesome watch! Congratulations on your purchase! I was contemplating a Doxa, just waiting to see the new sub200t reviews. The only thing I don’t like on this bad boy is the blue ar coating. I understand it aids legibility under water… but if dial isn’t blue, it doesn’t belong for me.

    I love when people take their collections from quantity to quality. I reduced my collection from 24 to 8 and still scheme to try to get it smaller, and I definitely like having a smaller collection of higher quality. Nice video and great watch!

    Congratulations! Are the clicks better than those of the Seiko diver’s watches of this price range? Could you please do a review of the new 39mm Doxa Sub 200T?

    Often we dismiss watches because we aren't adventurous enough to try them out or they don’t fit into a certain narrative of what is a good watch. Who cares that it doesn't have an inhouse movement or has a less than perfect clasp. Its an original design that looks great. Congratulations on achieving your grail and I applaud your choice. 👏
