did your guide give you a brief history of tibet? prior to communist some 70 years ago, tibet was a theocratic feudalist society where 95% of tibetans were serfs. the elites owned everything and held power through what would be considered very barbaric means today. minor crimes including trying to run away from serfdom were punished heavily. you can look up some of the very cruel punishments handed down, by religious elites including the top dog who is portrayed so romantically in the west. those punished couldn't work anymore so they were left as beggars. the serfs didn't have it much easier as many worked hard labor, malnourished, and lived outside with livestock. the land you saw would have been owned by nobles and all those kids would have been born into slavery. this is what that wall section was telling perhaps. the cpc abolished all of this and freed the serfs. many of the elites fled and are the ones you hear calling for "freedom" from the evil communists so things can return to the way they were. there are plenty of books and even videos about this you can check out if you are interested since the propaganda most westerners hear is a totally different picture.
