- Check out the beautiful style and rendering in "Autonomous", a sci-fi animated short as we are following the journey of F.R.E.D. the recon droid`s last order as he sets across a barren world of wrecks and autonomous weapons. For more information, please see the details and links below:
Autonomous started out as a proof of concept for a bigger story and completed as a free time project during 2 years by a team of 2 people based in Estonia.

"Master."
"I killed another one."
"...I'm sorry I couldn't save you."
"But I'll keep trying to make it safe!"
"So that other humans won't die."
"If any ever come here."
I thought it was a graveyard of the robots kills, human including.
You nailed it. He's killing those that killed his master.

Thats sad
I think it other
What amazes me (as a writer) is that the team conveys an entire story in four minutes. In the beginning, we don't know much. Then we see the 'cat' battle with a 'bomber'. Then we see why. During the credits, we see the aftermath of the battle/war. A nice, tight story.
Toward the end of an extinction level war, autonomous weapons were created to support and ultimately avenge each faction, those weapons endured long past the end of the war. It is a common theme, "Doomsday devices" they are called.
When the explorer encountered the planet, he ordered his reconnaissance robot to bring him one of the devices so that he could examine it, which he did. The robot continued to follow the order, in much the same way the autonomous weapons continued to fulfill the wishes of their creator.
It is a statement about the blind inevitability of destiny and that any attempt to alter events or break the chain is ultimately futile, as any possible action is always fulfilling the wishes of the creator.
Really this was great, thanks for the, would you call it a synopsis?
Bashir Wada Yes, or plot. It seemed like most comments were directed toward trying to understand the script and I felt the focus should be on the clip as an exposition; so I tried to answer the questions so people could then contemplate the art itself and not worry who "the soldier" was.
so you helped mak this film?
Look up "Last Day of War". It is literally that scenario. People built autonomous weapons to fight for them and, if necessary, avenge them, and the machines kept fighting the war long after the last human has died. Eventually, the last autonomous hangar fuels the last autonomous bomber with the last of its fuel and arms it with the last of its ammo to send it on its last bombing run. As it flies out to once again bomb some long-irrelevant target, its engines fail and burst into flames. When it gets no input from the pilot after asking for user input, it ejects his skeletonized corpse. The plane crashes and the system, registering that its last means of attack or defense has finally failed, declares the war to be over and powers down.
And now I think we've figured out the real origin of the Transformers.
Micheal Drake I'm a sucker for stories like that
I love the idea of it bringing the dead droids back like mice from a cat. I also liked the the smiley face in the soldiers cape.
That's not a smiley face. That's a blast pattern.
More like a shrapneley face

@@user-pm2qh2jh4b THINK SOOOOO
This is sssssssoooooooo worth a much longer version. The attention to detail, the way the shadows, the grainy texture of the sand. And the score. Such a terrific 4:3. Thank you!
Even though its master is dead it persists in trying to please him! An exercise in futility!
An exercise in programing📡🗿🔮
That was one of the prettiest CGI shorts I've seen. Better than a lot of Hollywood blockbuster CGI. I'd love to see more of this story.
That poor soldier died hard.
uh no he died easy looks like he didn't suffer at all...
I guess you could say he lost his head over the matter
I doubt he'll get ahead in life now
+Mr. Wellington Von Duke III -_- dont count on being a HEADliner at a club.... lol
Ouch! lol
So much story told outside the story you think you’re watching. Wonderful!
4 minutes and 3 seconds of eye candy and a great short story. Excellent sci-fi!
Watching some months ago, this short-short CGI-animated movie, I did not grasp its complex layers of thoughtfulness being mainly attracted by its superb technical execution. However, today, after watching it three more times, I must say to the authors, "Thank you for sharing with all of us this beautiful piece of art!!!"
That was really cool. Thank you. Whether trying to avenge his "friend" who looked to have been taken out by one of the little blasters, or bring him tribute or whatever. It was really cool.
Whatever took him out, made a two feet hole in the rock, I doubt it was one of htem. Something heavier, energy-based (things melted, that wasn't cloth)
I dont know why ... but the walking animation is just so satisfying
Amazingly imaginative. Music likewise. I hope to see more of Fred's travels soon.
100% excellent video. I want to see a longer story. Much longer.
What an amazing piece of work! Damn I wanted more. ... I can already tell there is some cool world building going on. . . but the surface was barely scratched.
Truly excellent animation work -- movement algorithms were very, very well done.
Reminded me of a Phillip K Dick story "The Second Variety" which was made into a so-so movie "Screamers". Well done in a short story format!
I like how they did the comparison of the size of the robots to people at the end, you never know sometimes how big these robots are.
I'd like to see this as a full length movie. Well done.
Touching. Well made.
2:20 *Teleports behind you* "This one is personal."
I'd like to see a prequel to this
Or a sequel
Absolutely
Yeah I wanna see the big one that scanned the cliff edge at the crash site
It seems that might've been the wreck itself, which was considerably more intact than the one we ended up seeing in more detail. With it being more intact, it's quite likely it had more security online as well.
Even in a short clip like this I can't even imagine the amount of time and work that must go into something of this quality. This really takes some knowledge talent and dedication. High quality and the story leaves just enough to the imagination to keep you focused and wanting more.
Fr bro this also makes me think of the vastness of the knowledge in the universe and how many places and planets we haven’t even set foot on. It also reminds me of no man’s sky.
Looks great well done...... Looking forward to a SCI-FI SERIES on this.
This clip deserves to be extended out to its own little movie.
The best kind of narrative is the one that has been implied rather than told. Great job!
That was awesome. Told an amazing story with zero dialogue. That's tough! Excellent.
I liked this video. Good graphics and a simple (and understandable) story.
It's a great job!!! Please sequel!!!
So awesome, A real talent here, not only in the animation but in the writting as well as the imagination !
Absolutely loved this clip. I want to see this as a complete movie.
This short movie has a lot of potential for a long one! You even got my wife's attention.
Wow this was sooooooooooooo good. Everything was perfect, camera work, lighting, sfx, music and animation. Loved it!
I have absolutely no idea what I just watched but I do know that I love it! These tests videos always have me wanting to see more!
Excellent! A lot of personality in that bot for the short time it's presented! Nice job! And quite appropriate music also. MC nailed it! Thanks for sharing it.
I'm continually impressed by what I see from the CG Bros. So often I am left wanting to see more of the story. This one is no exception. Thanks for the entertainment. Great job.

Классная короткометражка.

Facinating&extremely well done! The future is a mystery but this is off the planet!
Great use of common, found anywhere material's: Good enticement in laying down the story yet to be told. Good work all round.
did anyone else think that it was avenging its master?
It looks that way
+Markgamer12 I got the impression that it was more like a dog, where it loved it's master and would continue to do as he commanded until he commands otherwise
Yes I tend to agree with that. It is continuing to deliver those insect things to its former master. But I cannot decide because when those insect things blow they look like they make a mess of their targets, and the former master is grossly disfigured. Maybe the dog robot is intentionally causing the insects to detonate, and delivers the "carcasses" to his former master.
+Markgamer12 Yeah, robot warrior of vengeance. That ending was badass.
What did it do when the bug-bot shot at it? Was that some kind of hyperspace hideaway, or just dropping a projected image?
+Eric Neiman i think it was a projected image because you can see te robot coming from behind the pillar
Awesome, I like the last scene with the soldier :)
i wonder if they killed him? the little bugs i mean.
The design of that robot was amazing. Really really cool.
Great animation. Well done. Worthy of a series
really good. I wish there was more.
This is how you fucking do an animated short. I was starting to think people really didn't know anymore. 10/10
ikr
Well done I love the attention on lighting and deep fields
EXCELLENT. Finally, a short film that is both beautifully executed and well thought out. There are so many that fail in one regard or another, choosing panache or special effects or their idea of a story that they attempt to tell in a few minutes. This one keeps it simple while showing us the folly of war. Nicely done.
Definitely hints at a larger story, like what was still active at that large wreck!
Neat stuff!
Well done! This short piques your curiousity and raises many questions about what occured before and what's going to occur. The tech and concept are very good but not groundbreaking, but the story is excellent. Good job! More!
What story?
Pw yes tank u
Wow. Beautifully crafted world and atmosphere!!!
this was brilliant, one of the very best iv seen for a while :-)
well done
3:18 Very good representation of what large close-orbiting objects would look like in the daytime sky.
What an amaizing short film! Замечательный короткометражный фильм!
一开始4爪机器人走那几步路非常完美,作品就成功了一半了!cg 是世界上最好的特技团队!真棒!
I love this great work.
Great short. Every second of this movie was interesting and the ending simply brilliant.
OMG I NEED MORE OF THIS SHORT FILM. ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT 🥰
👍👍👍👍👍THUMBS UP👍👍👍👍👍
Love the eternal loyalty even from an autonomous unit for it's master after death.
This woukd make an great exploration game concept
Incredible, i like, this is very a great short movie.
+Steven LP I agree. This one ecompasses (at least) all the basics of what *I* think a great sci-fi short must have. Well done.
+GrumblingGrognard I love that it didn't open with exposition. such a common annoyance.
This should be award winning animation!
I've worked with 3ds Max, Rocket 3F, Terragen, CE4, UE4, but have not seen anything this high level. Amazing detailing and real-feel to it!
I like the way the legs move. Much more practical than wheels.
I would like to see further development of a story within this story.
The various detection equipment it has is very well done as well - the three main cameras which give it some depth perception and redundancy as well as them being able to retract upwards to clear them of dust, the longer range one that it kept covered most of the time, and the two smaller ones it folds upwards on those panels to see its surroundings from a vantage point with a relatively disposable piece. It's very practical and realistic, likely how something like that would actually be designed.
This is good one
Would be Nice to have a suite, that was Very Well Made! imho :)
OK first, why isn't there a kick starter to make a full film, anyone
3:08 - So, it seems that this particular AI at least knows the meaning of the word 'revenge'.
Maybe it's not revenge but just making sure it won't cause anymore trouble
Do you like the animation?
@@sashalarou6407 Technically of good quality but it is the underlying story and its' implications that really grabs the viewer's attention.
It just knows programming. “Revenge” is a description of human emotion.
Great! Movements of the machines are so cool!
Love this insane vid. Have seen it several times and still love it.
I love robots designs. It would be great to build such robo-centaur.
This definitely needs to be expanded. What caused this world to become this way? What led up to this? I would love to see a more full story about this world and these entities.
military guy was "owner" of this thing, so he has no head anymore.
Full movie please. There is so much potential here.
Beautiful. More please.
If this type of career was available when I was in school, I certainly wouldn't be a machinist. :)
Bro the stuff you’ve learned and done is invaluable. It will either be a great career forever or stand you in good stead in making unique models in 3D of you guve it a try! In my day computers ran at 7mhz and 1 frame took 24hrs to render at 320x200 or something. I was onky a kid so my time was worthless and it was more hard work than fun but similar guys went on to create important stuff in things like toy story or indie stuff
@@yourt00bz I enjoy the creative side of producing something from nothing. Whether its a computer animation or carving up a block of steel, its very satisfying. I'd like to watch someone create a segment from a film like this, I'm sure its a lot more work than most people think it is. Like anything that turns out well, your heart has to be in it first. My channel has recently focused on miniature machine tools and I'm really enjoying the journey.
@@joepie221 wow cool ! I’m glad you have a channel dedicated to such a craft , starting to get obsessed with the genius of machinework recently will check your channel out:
I think
Some
Of
The more modem creators might do live watch as they wirk streams usually on twitch
Thing is you can always learn 3D modeling and animation your self, but learning to be machinist takes bit more... well sure anyone can eventually find how to turn mill or lathe on and even create chips but it takes professional not to destroy inserts every ten minutes, to know all the right speeds for certain metals and specially what NOT to do... like having mounting plate on lathe chuck that has part superglued on... and you turn lathe on in its highest speed or crash the tool on it, or to chuck it self (havent happened to me if you wondered but possible for someone whos total noob).
Its never too late to learn so go find a tutorial and start practicing as a hobby, hell design character and machine it out of metal to create stop motion puppet. From picture to physical object and back to picture, interesting transition isint it? Also if you are accurate as machinists have to be and have designed the puppet properly even total noob can animate in stop motion, 3D in sense is not that different just requires to build the world in virtual space, where stop motion you can make it with your own two hands. I cant recall name of the animation, but there is short story that would fit to your since he used scrap and parts from machine shop to build a world and characters from that. Its on UA-cam that much i can recall.
Зато у тебя есть большой паровоз!
Круто =D (прямо в духе старой научной фантастики)
Wonderful, by a moment I felt that was the intro of a movie or a game. Very good. +1
That was cool. I liked how the style, was a little bit different than usual...yes, well done.
And that is why Guardians should never go anywhere without their ghosts.
lol
The day of a robot who was ordered to kill the bugs but while the robot was out his master was killed by a bigger bot with an energy based weapon, but the robot continued to follow the order until given a new one.
It was awesome. Great work!!! You are better than more peoples from Hollywood!!! Thanks
I like how the robot has a head with a different layout than a human and articulated in a plausible way.
Good short, sort of a gritty Wall-E.
good point, it was really look like reference to that movie and that Film
If a grisly Wall-E, then it’s totally got its work cut out!
in the last three days I saw quite a lot of "award winning cgi short films" that were much, much worse than this one, technically, storywise and cinematographic.
Even though the story is pretty old it was really really well executed. Awesome pictures, sound, storytelling.
I love the last music and composition.
Thanks :)
This piece from "Elevation".
Awesome! Somebody give these people a budget to do a movie.
NASA JPL should study this video to learn how to design and build a proper explorer.
Aww that's sad. It was just like a dog.
+Sophia Ying A very smart Dog
Also a good dog.
sophia dogs are the best if we must make A,I then we should base it on a dog mindset not a human one
Yeah, Rover lol
I thought that it doesn't know its master was dead and they went there to collect specimens and stuff and it's still just following protocol orders and programming, but if it is then its a good boi
I've been looking for this for years
Beautiful, I'm going to watch this thing more than again wow
Супер... Ощущение бесконечности вселенной в которой миллиарды лет происходит что-угодно, а вселенная холодно и равнодушно взирает на всё...

Me: *visible confused*
Great job !!! beautiful scenary
Simpaticissima l'animazione del robot, bella l'ambientazione, tutto questo da solo due artisti.Complimenti!
That thing reminds me of a Guardian Stalker.
To lay the dead enemies at your liege lords feet?
Or to mindlessly follow the last command, even though it is now futile?
To program autonomous AI's without loyalty is insanity.
Ребята, вы молодцы !!! Классно сделано. Всех благ и терпения.
Amazing rendition. Machines at war.
2:12 the „brother“ my crush texted me.
It killed the human but that wasn't enough for the little bot. It needs to mock the corpse of the meat bag by throwing trash around it.
what? I think it is autonomous mine searcher lol.
It's not mocking he's doing what he was last ordered to do
It reminds me of the Anglo Anglo Saxon epic, "The Battle of Malden." Though their lord had already fallen the outnumbered but faithful Saxon warriors kept fighting around his body. They slew Vikings until they themselves were laid low.
That is a good theory but there is a big gaping hole in it, the guy was killed by a small mechanoid and not the main character.
