  • Check out the beautiful style and rendering in "Autonomous", a sci-fi animated short as we are following the journey of F.R.E.D. the recon droid`s last order as he sets across a barren world of wrecks and autonomous weapons. For more information, please see the details and links below:
Autonomous started out as a proof of concept for a bigger story and completed as a free time project during 2 years by a team of 2 people based in Estonia.

What amazes me (as a writer) is that the team conveys an entire story in four minutes. In the beginning, we don't know much. Then we see the 'cat' battle with a 'bomber'. Then we see why. During the credits, we see the aftermath of the battle/war. A nice, tight story.

Toward the end of an extinction level war, autonomous weapons were created to support and ultimately avenge each faction, those weapons endured long past the end of the war. It is a common theme, "Doomsday devices" they are called.
When the explorer encountered the planet, he ordered his reconnaissance robot to bring him one of the devices so that he could examine it, which he did. The robot continued to follow the order, in much the same way the autonomous weapons continued to fulfill the wishes of their creator.
It is a statement about the blind inevitability of destiny and that any attempt to alter events or break the chain is ultimately futile, as any possible action is always fulfilling the wishes of the creator.

Bashir Wada Yes, or plot. It seemed like most comments were directed toward trying to understand the script and I felt the focus should be on the clip as an exposition; so I tried to answer the questions so people could then contemplate the art itself and not worry who "the soldier" was.

Look up "Last Day of War". It is literally that scenario. People built autonomous weapons to fight for them and, if necessary, avenge them, and the machines kept fighting the war long after the last human has died. Eventually, the last autonomous hangar fuels the last autonomous bomber with the last of its fuel and arms it with the last of its ammo to send it on its last bombing run. As it flies out to once again bomb some long-irrelevant target, its engines fail and burst into flames. When it gets no input from the pilot after asking for user input, it ejects his skeletonized corpse. The plane crashes and the system, registering that its last means of attack or defense has finally failed, declares the war to be over and powers down.
And now I think we've figured out the real origin of the Transformers.

Yes I tend to agree with that. It is continuing to deliver those insect things to its former master. But I cannot decide because when those insect things blow they look like they make a mess of their targets, and the former master is grossly disfigured. Maybe the dog robot is intentionally causing the insects to detonate, and delivers the "carcasses" to his former master.

The various detection equipment it has is very well done as well - the three main cameras which give it some depth perception and redundancy as well as them being able to retract upwards to clear them of dust, the longer range one that it kept covered most of the time, and the two smaller ones it folds upwards on those panels to see its surroundings from a vantage point with a relatively disposable piece. It's very practical and realistic, likely how something like that would actually be designed.

Thing is you can always learn 3D modeling and animation your self, but learning to be machinist takes bit more... well sure anyone can eventually find how to turn mill or lathe on and even create chips but it takes professional not to destroy inserts every ten minutes, to know all the right speeds for certain metals and specially what NOT to do... like having mounting plate on lathe chuck that has part superglued on... and you turn lathe on in its highest speed or crash the tool on it, or to chuck it self (havent happened to me if you wondered but possible for someone whos total noob).
Its never too late to learn so go find a tutorial and start practicing as a hobby, hell design character and machine it out of metal to create stop motion puppet. From picture to physical object and back to picture, interesting transition isint it? Also if you are accurate as machinists have to be and have designed the puppet properly even total noob can animate in stop motion, 3D in sense is not that different just requires to build the world in virtual space, where stop motion you can make it with your own two hands. I cant recall name of the animation, but there is short story that would fit to your since he used scrap and parts from machine shop to build a world and characters from that. Its on UA-cam that much i can recall.

The day of a robot who was ordered to kill the bugs but while the robot was out his master was killed by a bigger bot with an energy based weapon, but the robot continued to follow the order until given a new one.

I like how the robot has a head with a different layout than a human and articulated in a plausible way.

in the last three days I saw quite a lot of "award winning cgi short films" that were much, much worse than this one, technically, storywise and cinematographic.
Even though the story is pretty old it was really really well executed. Awesome pictures, sound, storytelling.

I thought that it doesn't know its master was dead and they went there to collect specimens and stuff and it's still just following protocol orders and programming, but if it is then its a good boi

To lay the dead enemies at your liege lords feet?
Or to mindlessly follow the last command, even though it is now futile?
To program autonomous AI's without loyalty is insanity.

It reminds me of the Anglo Anglo Saxon epic, "The Battle of Malden." Though their lord had already fallen the outnumbered but faithful Saxon warriors kept fighting around his body. They slew Vikings until they themselves were laid low.

That is a good theory but there is a big gaping hole in it, the guy was killed by a small mechanoid and not the main character.
