SA SCHOOLS RUGBY IS WILD! | THE PAARL DERBY

  • The biggest rugby match in the world this week is between 2 local schools in South Africa. That, in itself is crazy. But a reality which helps explain the depth of passion for the sport and a culture which has led to 4 World Cup wins for the Boks. 2 former Springboks help me understand this fixture - former Paarl Boys High School Captain Corne Krige and former World Cup winner and Paarl Gimnasium alumni Kobus Wiese.

      Great video Tim
Was aware of the Paarl derby and the general strength of SA schoolboy rugby, but great to get this level of insight. Some amazing schoolboy talent down there.
Would be great to see a video on the Leinster schools cup when you're in Ireland next. It's not on the same level as SA in terms of raw talent, but it has a similar long history and tradition.
I think about 15,000 were at the Blackrock College versus St Michaels game back in March, while the overall competition is key to supplying Leinster and Ireland with future pro players.
It's a smaller version of SA schools rugby in a much smaller country, but this has its advantages.
Corne Krige mentioned the gap in terms of in terms of progression of schools players in SA, which is due to the sheer number of players produced and the relatively small number of pro teams they can go to in SA.
In Leinster and Ireland we don't have this kind of problem as rugby is only the 4th most popular sport and all the really really good players will find a spot in one of the provincial academies.
I think a lot of SA schoolboy players are falling through the cracks and those ones should consider going to college in somewhere like Ireland (to play AIL rugby) which could put them on the radar for an Irish province (or another URC team up north), a French ProD2 team, or an English Prem/championship team.
Anyway, great content as always Tim. Really enjoy the channel.

Thank you mr eggchaser ! Made my day! Played my high school rugby at Klerksdorp high school close to "josi" between 1987-1992.
Remember going from klerksdorp to paarl to play in tournament in paarl!
Klerksdorp looks like mars , a barren landscape where the rugby pitch is as hard as rock then going to paarl and playing on actual grass !
And so much extra oxygen on the coast versus klerksdorp
I ended up being player of tournament in the blind side flanker position!
      What great memories!

I live in Paarl. The town closes down for the weekend. The trees on the Main Road are decorated in school colours. On Saturday the malls are empty, all the lodges and guesthouses are booked out. Shops sell cupcakes in Gim and Boys High colours. Absolute mayhem. The game is sold out..... Fantastic!!! Best part for me is that these are public schools, not expensive private schools. Hope to see you here next year Tim 🏉🏉🏉

I spent 8 years standing beside schoolboy rugby fields including the one highlighted here. In Cape Town Southern suburbs (the Englishmen's side of the Boerewors curtain). My boy went to Rondebosch Boys junior and high. We have our own massive interschool days, such as Rondebosch vs Bishops or SACS, over a hundred years of derbies. However when we cross the curtain to Paarl or Stellenbosch its often not a pretty sight. The apparent benefits of living on Boerewors becomes (sometimes painfully) clear. Atmosphere always electric.

Tim, I think your channel has done a lot for South Africa 🇿🇦. Not just in rugby, but also our relationship with England🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. Which most other of the top flight rugby 🏉 playing nations , do not like very much. Sometimes we forget that England gave us wonderful sports to play. The Southern Hemesphere rugby nations does have a bond. In all of these nations football reigns supreme, but the fact that rugby is for all shapes and sizes make it such a beautiful sport. All over South Africa we have this two school darbys, no matter rich or poor in rugby. We have grown that pool of rugby lovers to include everyone in a once, and maybe still a devided country. Rassie and Siya did a lot to brake that mold and shown our politicians that we can come together as one nation.🏉🇿🇦

My dad was sourced from a small town called Koringberg when he was in standard 8, grade 10 in today’s grade 10. They won 4 derbies in a row, him captaining the side in his last year. I’m talking about Paarl Gym. He played all positions from fly half, front row and flanker to eighth man. Great tradition of rugby players.

These Derby days are super special with age groups from U9 all the way to the College A side, the skill level blew me away, i thought it was big until I saw this insert !! 😲 the number of big rugby schools in this country is mind blowing!

Hi Tim! Thank you so much once again for appreciating our culture and passion for the game and our country. I watched your video on the Craven week as well and the thought came to me....... These players are working so hard, but we sometimes forget about the sacrifices their support systems had to make as well (parents/grandparents/teachers/coaches...) I want to thank every one of them, so many hours next to a cold, rugby field, all the planning, moms preparing extra meals, buying extra plasters. Wow! Thank you, the wind beneath their wings!

Thank you for a great channel and being a great ambassador for SA and SA Rugby. The Affies / Grey College derby is probably the 2nd biggest derby in the country after the Paarl Schools showdown. It is also attended by about 25 000 people every year. The fact that the 2 schools are in the same town, does make the Paarl derby unique. Good luck to the 2 Paarl Schools this weekend. May the best team win.

I remember the derby from the 90s. One year we went by train to them and they visited us the same way the next year.
Pristine manners and hospitality awaited you as you stayed in the home of your opposite number.
I remember standing next to them before we did the run onto the field looking at them thinking "they're not so big'.
I have never played a match like the one against Grey college they simply swarm you is the best way to describe it.
Anyway, that match taught me humility as we were unbeaten against everyone else for years but man they were just different.

Other big derbies. Affies vs Pretoria Boys High is huge, also over 100 years old. Affies dominate it lately (I went to Affies) but the atmosphere is amazing. Then there is the massive KES vs Jeppe derby in Johannesburg with both schools having quite strong teams lately. Add to that Durban derbys, also Hilton vs Michaelhouse. The Paarl derby is the biggest though since both teams are normally in the top 5 in the country so its always extremely competitive
