Soundcheck Live #94 18Oct2023 @Lucky Strike Hollywood 90028
Welcome back all! -- first Soundcheck Live since 26Feb2020
An especially savage cover of The Wanton Song!
17:10 Inset video clip on #4 courtesy of Ann Sunde - watch her full video: • Soundcheck Live 94 Rel...
I included it to partially compensate for a wayward cellphone blocking to the exact second, the most interesting and intense part of the guitar solo
18:05 I included the flowy dream sequence-y effect as filler for 26 sec of missing video, due to waiting for cool-down of the Sony RX100vii. It overheats recording 4K 30fps video after as little as 20 minutes from cold -- and unpredictably less from warm. Managing this overheating is a major distraction from getting the best angles / pans / zooms / framings. The preferred Sony FX3 records 4K 60fps video indefinitely.
Alternate angle video of #4 Still of the Night, with mixer board audio: • Still of the Night (CO...
Jim's Whingefest™:
* audio is listenable, but has significant clipping distortion, especially on Still of the Night. I'm guessing '"Louder Sounds Better" syndrome took hold at the mixer board, for this song. Later songs from this show are mostly free of clipping: • Leah Martin-Brown, Dus... . Lucky Strike Hollywood has an excellent Bose line array PA -- it sounds absolutely glorious when not overdriven. I doubt it's caused by my microphone or levels: Shure MV88 stereo mic I used is rated at 120dB SPL, and I used the minimum 0dB gain setting. I can't be sure whether the clipping is in the signal chain and/or the PA, or if it's actually not clipping but exceeding 120dB SPL. Regardless, 120dB SPL is unnecessarily loud for great sounding live music, and risks hearing damage.
* lighting: An immediate flashback to the most recent Soundcheck Live 3.6 years ago: unflattering lighting presets in the DJ lighting software. For example during the Still of the Night bridge, lighting continuously varies between the ideal even, bright, white or blue-white (16:20 - 16:22, 16:35 - 16:36, 16:52 - 16:56) and various unflattering, resolution-killing settings:
* greenish red 5:01 - 5:10
* dim yellow-orange 6:02 - 6:08, 15:00 - 15:06
* monochrome red 16:58 - 17:16 18:23
These endless lighting variations distract from the performance, with no clear artistic or aesthetic benefit. Ideally all segments of lighting presets with dim, unflattering, resolution-killing color balances would be eliminated.
And now back to our regularly scheduled positivity -- it was still a great show!

It ain't right, getting good looks, great hair, and guitar playing ability like this!
Anyone can improve their looks/hair/guitar skill:
Researching hair/makeup/clothes, weight management, and guitar training: Passion, Keep-Trying (persistence), Efficient learning, and time (pKET).
@@antera77 C'mon man don't get all preachy. It was posted tongue in cheek. I have no doubt Doug as worked very hard and deserves everything he's gotten. But you know as well as I do there are some butt ugly musicians out there who aren't as blessed as Doug. I'm not mad about it, just stating facts. Rock on.
"I have no doubt Doug as worked very hard...but...some butt ugly musicians...aren't as blessed as Doug."
Actually your sentiment is what I was addressing: Many believe you need to be 'blessed" to have great looks/hair/guitar skill. Falsely believing even if they research how to do hair/makeup/clothes, and how to manage weight with sustainable diet and exercise, that it's hopeless. Believing they just 'don't have it' when much more likely it's a matter not finding the right guitar learning path that maximizes pKET.
So they don't try. This makes them more likely to fall into jealousy and resentment.
You seem to have some of it right: Recognizing Doug has 'worked hard." But everyone can improve, even if they don't reach exactly Doug's levels. Seeking out the right hair/makeup/clothes, weight management, and guitar training.
" don't get all preachy..."
My comment was meant to encourage. Many are far more capable of reaching their goals, than they think.
Doug Aldrich has a nice voice and I think he should play blues stuff.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻
Doug's voice in this song sounds much much better than Glenn's one. Doug is the best!!❤
Doug sings like my grandma 😂
Better stick to guitar only 😢
Hay que tener agallas para substituir a Coverdale! 😂
Who’s the vocalist?
I would think this little club wouldn't care if you used your FX3. Rx100 still did a decent job.
"Rx100 still did a decent job"
Yes, the RX100vii 1.0" sensor and optical continous zoom give much better live performance video, than even the latest iPhone 15 Pro.
Still, I love the FX3's 4k60 capability, no overheat worries, and the full-frame image sensor drives a virtuous cycle : better low-light, better autofocus and autoexposure, effectively increasing resolution. Here's an example at the same venue ua-cam.com/video/ExlpIf0c2aI/v-deo.html
@@antera77 Yes, so true. Any reason why you didn't use the FX3 this time?
Which amp is Aldrich playing through?
Blackstar. The Marshall is powered off. It's probably a marshall circuit anyway.
Uhmmm... yeah, right. One things is for sure: Doug better sticks to pulling the strings then trying to sing. Did that rhyme? Good, then I'll hope it sticks.
I couldn't agree more;)
Why so many covers?
Probably because people would rather hear them then a bunch of originals.
Any guitar palyer can bring insight @6:17 how he does that artificial harmonics?
That's just an intense flanger, most likely pedal-actuated. No "harmonics", in the damped-harmonic fretting sense.
GAHHH I've been planning guitar instruction videos for years. You might have just inspired me to throw the switch
The singer touching the fretboard at 6:17, doesn't appear to have any effect on the sound i.e., is not damping a harmonic.
Actually it's more likely a Leslie effect or wah wah, than a flanger
The original studio recording additionally uses backwards echo -- not possible for live performance, although I would imagine there are simulations.

Kurt Mayer
Great player but very often sounds out of tune to my ears!
Singin or playing?
A good solo always sounds borderline out of tune
Yeah, no.
ギターは最高だけど、歌はやめたほうがいい😮
LOL Doug's voice is decent -- I woulda preferred a different Dead Daisies song though, like the clip of Hypnotize Yourself I included.
the singer is weak
Singer needs to quit booze for a while.
Please not sing ............ only guitar Doug......
