Agreed. There are a good handful of people that you could label as musical geniuses, but Stevie stands alone on top of all of them. He is like if you had a multi oscar winning blind cinematographer. There is no one who was clearly more put on this earth to make music than him.
Just wanna say man I found this channel a couple weeks ago and I’m pretty addicted. You have a fire ass format and I love that you can actually play instruments to demonstrate and emphasize what you’re talking about. You’ve also put me onto a couple phenomenal artists and I can’t thank you enough for that. Keep blessing people with your knowledge and music. You’re a badass my friend
When I was studying music recording tech in uni, my professor gave us the master tracks from Superstitious to play around with. I was really impressed with how many layers of clavinet were in them...it's one of those tracks that doesn't sound incredibly complex when you listen to it and is very easy to groove to, but when you actually break it down you realize there are a TON of moving parts that make it what it is. Amazing song.
YES! That's why it doesn't sound the same if you try to play it live. So many layers. And similar to the harpsichord where "louder" = "more notes" - the layers of clavinet fill up the whole thing
Yes, and actually the clavinet, since it is so percussive, is also kind of a percussion instrument on this track. I think, at least half of the groove is coming from the layered clavinets rather than from (also great, but relatively straight) drums.
Might be interesting to make a clavinet loop with the same rhythms as played by Stevie but adopt it to the appropriate keys before layering it over... Bach?
never forget that paul simon thanked stevie wonder for not releasing an album so that someone else had a chance to win a grammy. wonder BUILT DIFFERENT
Greatest songwriter of all time! The melodies, the chord progressions, the change ups, the lyrics, the instrumentation, the rythyms and constant inventions are unmatched.
Stevie Wonder is a stone cold genius! As well as his amazing drumming, the multiple clav parts are what gives 'Superstition' its incredible groove, and what makes it so hard to cover well.
Put it this way, you can make an easy argument for Stevie Wonder being the greatest artist of all time. Funny timing, my original vinyl press of Talking Book arrived today!
Listen man, this channel is a hidden gem 💎 I really appreciate the time you put into gathering this information and the time you put into packaging it with so much quality. You deserve all your flowers 💐
Criminally underrated channel. Love how you brought some history into things with Bach. Would love to see a video with parallels of classical to modern music!
Hats off on the Stevie and James Brown mashup! With the Bach Mashup, I believe you may have mine different sections of that prelude to compliment the chord changes in the Superstion pre-Chorus to chorus section (it’s possible)!
Another incredible watch! Those 'Groove Transfusions' were amazing. Your channel is just basically a dissection of my favourite artists/albums/tracks each week...
You’ve absolutely nailed the sweet spot of musical education/ history/ entertainment/ accessibility. I have devoured your videos since finding your channel. Love watching you play along to the mash ups.
Found this channel maybe 3 weeks ago and I haven’t left since I’m here for ALL the content. So much so I’ve created playlists with Soulquarian and other types of music I’ve heard before but now I’m growing to appreciate it
Dude, you are just so entertaining with a shit-load of knowledge thrown in, not to mention groovy as f*** on four strings. Brilliantly researched and executed. 💜🙏🏽
Fam, thank you for your GREAT digging. You touch on my favorite greats, my biggest musical influences, all while bringing inspiration to my craft. I'm sure it did the same for many others. Keep doing dope things.
As a bass playing soul and funk DJ from the UK it’s clear how much I love and learn from your videos. I might dear to venture Bernie was ripping it up on the clav before Stevie but I’m sure you’re saving that for you 20 episode deep dive into the impact P-Funk had on, well just about everything after. Keep up the brilliant work. From a big fan across the pond (or tracks, you take your pick my friend)
Wow, i love all your DTG shows but you’ve knocked out the park with this one. Thanks. Talking Book/Superstition is outstanding of course but Innervisions/Living for the City is the ultimate Stevie record for me. Mind blowing, I still get goosebumps every time I hear it 💚
Thank you again for my weekly groove lecture. It's always fun, always well researched, always masterfully made, and I will always check these out and share for as long as you keep making them.
Again, love your channel! Have you seen the breakdown of Stevie’s clav parts? For decades I thought he was just playing a whole bunch of notes with both hands. Turns out he laid down like 5 parts, each with a different rhythm and notes. But when blended together, no clutter and it all makes sense! His brain simply operates on a different frequency. His chord selections and progressions sometimes just blow my mind away. In fact, have you done a breakdown of “Overjoyed”? Chords go all over the place and still make sense!
I got a book that breaks down Stevie's playing and it was pointed out how a lot of musicians sees his music as somewhat difficult to play due to it being somewhat unorthodox. I can see that because there aren't many who can recreate that Stevie vibe, even with remaking his songs.
The jeff beck version is actually sick. The drums in that one, played by Carmine appice, have a much heavier feel and a crash on the “and” of 1 that offsets the feel but makes so much sense
He played the drums on this? Wow im convinced stevie can see. I met him once at a restaurant in Cleveland. I asked him if we could take a picture together and he said of course. He then asked me if we were standing in front of a bar . I was like uhh yeah. So he then said "lets move so the bar isnt in the background. I was blown away...
Man you rocked those bass pieces. This channel makes me want to pick up my bass or guitars whenever I watch a video, but I also appreciate the incredible knowledge you have and the research you do. Amazing.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Excellent presentation!! I feel like I really learned something new! BTW, in case anyone was interested, the main difference between a clavichord and a piano is the strings are plucked on a clavichord, while the strings are struck on a piano (hence, the hammers inside the piano). Quick question - do you happen to have a video of the equipment that you're using? (Sorry, my first time watching you).
this guy is very cool, what a video!!! I've never been subscribed to any channel, but this time I'll do it right now. every video is a lesson, and he knows what he's talking about. I can't miss a single video.
Great Vid! Sly Stone was also using the harspichord on his 71 album There's a Riot Goin on, which I think added a lot to it's completely distinct sound. I bet you could make a good video on its use of the drum machine and combination with live rhythms and sampling.
One of my favourite uses of Superstition is on Amerigo Gazaway's Common Wonder album from his SoulMates project. The whole series is fantastic, but that one in particular is a stand-out.
excellent video and musical intelligence of the highest order, you have managed to break down the very essence of music making - history - tech and basic music theory for the common man to understand, love your work man, keep on educating us ..👌
As soon as you mentioned another type o- sound I knew exactly where you were going. A few years ago on here somebody posted a mashup of Superstition with You Can Have Watergate Just Gimme Some Bucks And I’ll Be Straight by Fred Wesley & The JB’s and they played it over the video of Stevie’s live version of Superstition on Sesame Street and it was like Stevie and James were in the studio at the same time. It was absolutely perfect.
At 10:34, what... did... you... just.. do?! What did you do? I mean... wha... how?! That was the funkiest version of my favorite song to test a Karoke system when I go out to sing Karoke that I ever heard. The 12th greatest song of all time just created the greatest funky remix of all time in your hands. Sir, you cannot do that again... you cannot, I forbid it (by that I mean, don't stop and do that again, you awesome musician you)! I need to know how you found that mix. That was amazing! And, and, and, this video explanation of the universal groove was off the hook. Just insanely awesom.
Your blood type analogy for the groove is more on point when you think about the relationship between rhythm, timing, and heartbeat/heartrate. Groove literally is in the blood! Also: that funky Cuff it Up needs to be the way Bey performs that song live, that shit is 🔥🔥🔥 And Bach is also super 🔥🔥🔥 with this funk track, reminds me of Wynton Marsalis doing Bach jazz. And just fyi not to be a dick but it’s pronounced “Clah-vee-er” in case you ever are around some of the Bach heads 😂
Wow… I just did something about a week ago in Ableton Live where I extracted this groove and used it on one of my own written drum patterns The results were insanely musical and impressive It’s great to see you stumbled across this also🤘🏻
I've been watching your videos for months and didn't realize I wasn't subscribed. Fixed that right quick. Did you go to music school or are you self taught? Either way, you're awesome. Your groove grid is an excellent breakdown on the pocket that anyone can understand and the other ways you talk about music is easily digestible
Yes! Stevie's music is a balm for the soul. One of my "break glass in case of No Good Very Bad Terrible Day" albums is Signed, Sealed, Delivered. 😊 Do you think you might ever do a video along the lines of "one chord to explain The Roots" about some of the harmonies and theory in his work? There have been so many phases to his career but a constant throughline has been songs in the key of... joy? Would love to hear your take on it, if you were ever inclined.
To me the best musician of all time
glad someone feels the same!!
Class act talent from debut throughout his whole career and still going
Agreed. There are a good handful of people that you could label as musical geniuses, but Stevie stands alone on top of all of them.
He is like if you had a multi oscar winning blind cinematographer. There is no one who was clearly more put on this earth to make music than him.
Definitely one of THE !!!
Hard to argue with that
Just wanna say man I found this channel a couple weeks ago and I’m pretty addicted. You’ve also put me onto a couple phenomenal artists and I can’t thank you enough for that. Keep blessing people with your knowledge and music. You’re a badass my friend

@@diggingthegreats very good channel definitely one I look forward to !
Nothing beats informative and fun! It's like the music class I never had at school.

The African influence in funk, interlocking layers of rhythm. The genius of human soul. 🔥
never forget that paul simon thanked stevie wonder for not releasing an album so that someone else had a chance to win a grammy. wonder BUILT DIFFERENT
Yep! And then he came out the next year with Songs in the Key of Life and all the artists were like “oh no, not again!” 😂
That james brown stevie mashup is insane 🔥🔥🔥
Greatest songwriter of all time! The melodies, the chord progressions, the change ups, the lyrics, the instrumentation, the rythyms and constant inventions are unmatched.
💯 x 💯!!
I love how each video theres a new metaphor that requires a “hear me out”. Yet every time it makes a bunch of sense and explains it perfectly
A good summary of the channel - now wait, hear me out!
Stevie Wonder is a stone cold genius! As well as his amazing drumming, the multiple clav parts are what gives 'Superstition' its incredible groove, and what makes it so hard to cover well.
3:25 felt that “git it Stevie!” 😂 I love your passion for music! Thank you for sharing it with us ❤
Put it this way, you can make an easy argument for Stevie Wonder being the greatest artist of all time.
Funny timing, my original vinyl press of Talking Book arrived today!
PERFECT Timing 🔥
I was today years old when I found this channel. I’m lodging a formal complaint with the YT algorithm. Subbed. 👍🏽
Stevie's been seen as a genius ever since he was a kid. Look it up. 😊
blood types too. he went biological, historic and of course musical
Hats off on the Stevie and James Brown mashup!
With the Bach Mashup, I believe you may have mine different sections of that prelude to compliment the chord changes in the Superstion pre-Chorus to chorus section (it’s possible)!
Yeah the Bach piece goes all kinds of other places 😂
That james brown mashup at the end really tied the room together man.
Another incredible watch! Those 'Groove Transfusions' were amazing. Your channel is just basically a dissection of my favourite artists/albums/tracks each week...
🙏🙏
The nuances in the music are incredible. I wish you'd do your top 10 producers list
You’ve absolutely nailed the sweet spot of musical education/ history/ entertainment/ accessibility. I have devoured your videos since finding your channel. Love watching you play along to the mash ups.

the best artist of all time period. btw your great man i appreciate you.
Great song.
Funky Drummer, Apache, and many other breakbeats work also on the mashups
*his song "As" is one of the best songs ever made*
Yeah, that James Brown/Stevie mashup was 🔥🔥🔥 Love this channel - keep it up!
As a bass playing soul and funk DJ from the UK it’s clear how much I love and learn from your videos. Talking Book/Superstition is outstanding of course but Innervisions/Living for the City is the ultimate Stevie record for me. Mind blowing, I still get goosebumps every time I hear it 💚
The fact you manage your inception your way into other references of your previous videos is gold.
I found Superstition and was shocked when I researched that it was made in the 1970s. I was like, "WHAT?"
Thank you again for my weekly groove lecture. It's always fun, always well researched, always masterfully made, and I will always check these out and share for as long as you keep making them.
🙏 Thank you so much!
Absolute legend. I wept when I finally got to see him live at one of his toys for tots shows in LA. 😂
I always enjoy your videos. Excellent production and packed with tons of new information. Thanks 🙏🏾 😊
Dude i found your channel 2 hours ago and I've just been binging since. I truly appreciate your hard work, thank you.
🙏🙏🙏
He doesn't have enough haha! I want to binge more but watched almost all of them already
Recent subscriber who has already been sharing your videos left and right. I smile through these uploads and I love it. Thank you!
Glad to have you here 🔥

The jeff beck version is actually sick. The drums in that one, played by Carmine appice, have a much heavier feel and a crash on the “and” of 1 that offsets the feel but makes so much sense
Best music channel ever alert
Literally I saw the title of the video and I was like “It’s Supersition isn’t it?” And I am not disappointed
You should've let that Bach/Stevie remix keep going!😂 I had a feeling it was gonna get crunchy and funky but in a good way!🤣
Man!!!! You are too much mixing all that stuff together like that. Genuis comes to mind. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I love the flow of conciousness of your videos bro, the tangents and the u turns...
As for Stevie, one of the all time musical geniuses.
I adore you, your skills, and the work you do here!
Thank you for ALL of that!
Great video. Your bass tone is killin, btw
Once again...another AMAZING video 🔥. Thanks, Brother!!!
Your musical lexicon is phenomenal!!!!! Thank you sir!
I love how you made that bass session/blood transfusion for us but it was really for you 😂 awesome video, as always!
He played the drums on this? Wow im convinced stevie can see. I met him once at a restaurant in Cleveland. I asked him if we could take a picture together and he said of course. Type O Negative is also an AWESOME band...hee hee...
However, yes indeed, I adore the research you put into your series!!!
Another winner! Man, I remember, as a child, seeing Stevie perform this on Sesame Street. Blew. My. Mind.
LOVE !T
@diggingthegreatest , you are an outstanding human being !
Man I absolutely love this channel
Dude, keep it up this is so much fun to watch and learn stuff.

Well done, the edit, the information, the follow through… well done 🎉

What a masterpiece of a channel you have my friend.

you're easily one of the best on UA-cam.
Great video!
Awesome
that james brown mashup is straight fire, need the full length right meow
You are the man, the archive, the knowledge, the school, the culture! 👊🙌🙏
One of my favourite uses of Superstition is on Amerigo Gazaway's Common Wonder album from his SoulMates project. The whole series is fantastic, but that one in particular is a stand-out.
Yes sir. Thank you for mentioning that. That A Common Wonder mashup by Amerigo Gazaway is one of the best mashups of all times.
Awesome video! How does this have so few views??? Deserves way more
I know when a new video drops im gonna get a education. Great to still be learning at 53.
excellent video and musical intelligence of the highest order, you have managed to break down the very essence of music making - history - tech and basic music theory for the common man to understand, love your work man, keep on educating us ..👌
There’s so much info and facts, you cram more into 11 minutes that I think most people could in 45 mins.
As soon as you mentioned another type o- sound I knew exactly where you were going. One of my rules of life is that everyone loves Stevie Wonder. If you don’t you’re just not human.
Man this is fire. I need a copy of this.
Love your analysis and match-ups, bro!
🙏🙏
You are fantastic.. thank you from Italy
Much love from the US 🙏
Jeez you're a diversely talented dude...these breakdowns are always good but youve out done yourself with this
At 10:34, what... did... you... just.. do?! What did you do? I mean... wha... how?!

This is so fascinating. Excellent work man
🙏
wow, the Stevie JB mashup was fire!!!!
have you ever covered Donny Hathaway? That would be a phenomenal episode.
Really enjoyed your analysis of this song from a musician's perspective.
You've started me on a journey with your channel. LOVE IT! Keep doing your thing, my man! And thank you!
SUBSCRIBED!
Amazing video! Love everything about your channel.
I love your videos so much. thanks man.
Love your videos! This one is just awesome.
Thank you so much 🙏
@ 10:34 are you kidding me?!?!? ⚡️⚡️🔥🔥 unbelievable!!!
🙏🙏 too much fun with this one
Every vid from you is a gem.
🙏
Great channel man. Quality videos 💯💯💯
The next video should be about Peter Steele. What a plot twist would that be, huh.
David Garibaldi would agree with you on the application. Share the funk groove. It’s the human THING. Soul funk and a functioning groove.
Your blood type analogy for the groove is more on point when you think about the relationship between rhythm, timing, and heartbeat/heartrate. Groove literally is in the blood!

Wow…
I just did something about a week ago in Ableton Live where I extracted this groove and used it on one of my own written drum patterns
The results were insanely musical and impressive
It’s great to see you stumbled across this also🤘🏻
I actually like the Stevie Wonder Bach mashup somebody should do a full song of that. ❤
Amazing idea for a video, even better execution. Shoutout to can I kick it in there. Now I finally know how to play it. Thanks!
Thanks for a great video mate. Highly entertaining Bro! 😉👍
Interesting blood analogy. This song featured in John carpenter's the thing, where they are storing blood in a cabinet.
I've been watching your videos for months and didn't realize I wasn't subscribed. Fixed that right quick. Did you go to music school or are you self taught? Either way, you're awesome. Im feeling your channel. Glad I came across it

To this day I'm still surprised Stevie's stream of his ended relatively early.
