The Straight Story is a fantastic film. I have it on DVD & have watched it many times. I definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't already seen it. Richard Farnsworth & Sissy Spaceck were the perfect choices for the parts they played. It's definitely one of my all time favorite films.

I love the movie. It gives me an idea to try a trip like that or just to the closest store to where I live.

I seen the movie several times and I wouldn't be afraid to take my old tractor as many miles as that man did. My tractor was built in 1968 upto 78 but I'm not sure what the year of the tractor really is..I also know how to make em go faster but I'm not sure about the one that I have because of how it's built. I've been told that they were sold as a poor man's tractor, but I'm not sure about it. This was a heart wrenching movie and I can only imagine what that journey was really like. The only person that really knows is the man that done it. In today's society I'm not sure if an elderly person could pull something like that off simply because of how mean people can be towards others and that's the sad part 😢

So odd seeing Alvin as not Richard Farnsworth!

It’s a great movie, but the real Alvin Straight wasn’t a friendly live and let live simple man with a few rough edges. He was actually pretty aloof and probably had a harder life than the one on this movie. He lived all over the Rocky Mountain states and upper Midwest struggling to make a living. His time in WW2 was the only time in his life his horizons were expanded and not in a good way.

If it's 210 miles and he can drive 5 miles per hour it would only take 42 hours of driving. I don't understand how it took 6 weeks. And he only got 20 miles in the first 3 days? Seems like the math is wrong or something.

I've wondered that myself. He had some breakdowns, maybe only traveled 4 hours per day, which is 20 miles per day.

In the film it shows him stopping to camp on the roadside or in old abandoned barns at night & someone let him camp in their backyard for awhile when the mower broke down while. That took time as he had to wait for his daughter to send $ for the repair, the part had to be ordered & then time to do the repair. This was a good while back too so things weren't as quick as they are today. If you haven't seen the film you're really missing out. It's great.
