The new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 has been launched, and here's our in depth tyre test, comparing it to its predecessor, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, and one of the current market leading tyres, the Continental PremiumContact 6.
All three sets of tyres are tested in dry and wet handling, dry and wet braking, noise and comfort, rolling resistance and aquaplaning to give you a full overview on how each tyre performs.

Also huge props to his honest, objective review. He could've been swayed, even subconsciously, to avoid criticizing the Goodyear given he was at a Goodyear test facility. He's an honest reviewer and at no point did it feel like a Goodyear promotional video. I'm a tire nerd and enjoy his reviews.

Hugely informative vid and great to see cars driven on the limit but with no silly power slides thrown in just to entertain the kids. Bought Goodyear ASY5s for my Boxster on the back of this review and couldn’t be happier as they were incredibly cheap compared to the Michelin and Conti rivals. Cheers again.

I already know one of the key questions is going to be why the CPC6 and not the Michelin Pilot Sport 4? Looking at previous test data, which you can find on www.tyrereviews.co.uk, both the CPC6 and MPS4 are so closely matched, it doesn't really matter, and at the time of test there was better availability of the Continental in the open market. I hope you enjoy the video otherwise, and don't forget to subscribe as there is lots of great fun coming this year! If you have an opinion on your own tyres, head over to www.tyrereviews.com to leave a review for all to see!

Funny thing, I went to a online tire dealer's site (regional to the Balkans) to check the prices for GYAS5, MPS4 and CPC6 and the CPC6 is the cheapest of the bunch (5% cheaper than the Goodyear and 4% cheaper than the Michelin), with the price difference between the Michelin and Goodyear being literally a buck fiddy (or 1 Pound Sterling, if you will). Tire size I searched for was 225/40/18, price difference may vary based on tire size.
P.S. How does Nankang stack up? As a budget option, being more than half the price in some cases...

Shouldn't you, to be fair, take some extra laps around the track with each tyre in the reverse order? I feel that maybe you getting used to the car and the track + the extra rubber laid on the pavement for each round could translate into progressively better lap times?

After picking up some Conti TS 860s for my 280 Superb in the winter thanks to the channel (no snow though, natch) I came right back to look at the new summers. I was probably looking at MPS4 anyway but now, if I can find some, will pick up some F1A5 depending on the price. MPS4 are avalable at £151 a corner fitted. Finding them though is proving difficult in 245/40/19. Only seen them at Mytyres right now and at £688 for 4, compared to £544 for 4 MPS4s from Protyre (with the £100 Michelin cashback offer) its probably going to be those!
Keep up the good work. Even though I'll probably not need new tyres now for a couple of year I do still enjoy the content.

Unless your MX-5 is boosted you won't be having any troubles pushing those tires with it in any conditions apart from wintertime. They stick to the road like shit to a blanket, both wet and dry...

    • @Courtathor
      @Courtathor 4 роки тому +2

16000 miles, two track days, coilovers fitted with ~2 degrees of camber, and one rotation later, the fronts are at 2mm and the rears at 1.6mm. Up until around 2.5mm they were sublime for both wet and dry grip, easily keeping up with more exotic stuff on track. Steering feel and feedback could be improved, but that's in part due to the MX5 ND having a pretty numb electric rack anyway... Can't complain about wear really, one of the track days was in 25c+ heat with fairly long sessions as well, along with around 3000 miles around Europe trying to keep up with an F430. Quite progressive at the limit, and allows you to have small slip angles without struggling to keep it there. I think the one thing I am missing with them is response on initial turn in, as they can feel quite numb on first input. Once past that they are fine though.
Only thing now is what next? I'll likely be going up one size to 215/45/17, which means either PS4/F1A5/PC6 as normal, but also opens the door to the Cup 2, however wear and wet grip/aquaplaning will take a hit. Any thoughts?

I was just thinking that. Some cheap tires are very good, mostly they are from Thailand, Indonesia, ect. Not China. Great quality for an amazing price. Kelly is not great I can tell you, 1990s tires. Cooper generally crap too these days, they haven't come up from the 2000s, a time when I sold a lot of them. Even thier best new tires I dont care for, dry rot, wear ect. I've been in the biz 20 years. I'm running Thunderers or GT radials today on my cars. Great for the money. Half the price of lower end name brands. 1/4 the price of a Michelin!! LMAO
Thunderer Mach 4 are not 1/4 the tire of a Michelin more like 10- 15% less performance in 3 seasons. Now I've rode on some kellys and coopers that felt like they were much worse than these Thialand tires. Those were a whole 20% step down.

It's been a week since I purchased a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5"s 235/45R17, can say that they have great wet grip/braking and fuel economy has also improved. However they are significantly louder than my previous set of continentals. If they last 50k Kms then they are a steal but I doubt they will last that long as the roads here in UK are getting worse day by day.

Nice comparison and I am glad with the result as I just bought and mounted the GY Eagle F1 Asym 5 on my Citroen C5. It is not a sports car but it is fantastic on the highway and I sometimes have a heavy foot and therefore decided to replace my GY Efficient Grip Performance 225/55/17, which made around 75.000km (45.000miles), had still plenty of tread (about 4,5mm), but were 6 years old with the EF1Asym5. BUT what I noticed the most was the difference in tire behaviour as a result of different LOAD INDEX and EXTRA LOAD (XL) property of the tire. The difference is very noticeable, the EFP wich were 101V and XL were louder, harder and more direct and the EF1Asym5 97Y (not XL) are more comfortable, quieter and have amazing braking but you notice the softness of the tire wall when making sudden changes of direction. I really put a lot of effort in choosing the 225/55/17 97Y model as the load and speed indexes were more than sufficient for my car. Later, after I bought the new tires Asym5, I noticed the sticker on the car that specified the 97W or V as the default tire for my vehicle and also added tha they be Michelin Primacy HP ... ... ... BUT how to choose the optimal tire for a specific car in regard to LOAD INDEX and SPEED RATING and XL option as well? Would you do one episode on that? Comparing the same size and model tire but with a different load index, speed rating and XL option ... wouldn't that be something?! And consequently check tire ware and so on. PLEASE do one episode on that as it is such an important thing that we forget to consider and usually let the service clerk decide for us, as long as the model and size are ok. But the differences are very big. So guys, are you with me? Would you like to see that? Or am I the only one bothering with those details?

BMW specifies Run Flat, and I've noticed that the car is very sensitive to the tyre choice. Can almost become unstable and have serious over-steer on the highway, especially when changing lanes while accelerating, with the wrong tyre. Perhaps its just me, but I would really like to know the weights of tyres too! Especially compared to the Michelin PS4 in the category of tyre. Some of us choose lighter wheels at the expense of looks, and although i'm not saying I would choose a light tyre over a heavy one without the other components of grip, feel and wet handling being important, I do think these tyres are all pretty close (including the MPS4) and I would be interested to know which is the lightest.

I changed my tires pair by pair and the originals were SC5s, so I tried to keep in line with those. Hi, like the video. I'm looking to replace Michelin 4S (235/40R19 96Y XL) on a 2015 Mondoe Titanium X estate 2 litre 180bhp diesel. It came with Continental SP5 and their wear was awfully quick so I switched to Michelins to improve mileage on the Conti's. I am now considering switching to Goodyear F1 Asymm' to maintain as a good driving experience but with better, improved sensible mileage life. I have always had easy mid to high 26,000 distance on previous cars and tyres (best was Ford Cougar Coupe with original Michelin fronts changed at 32,000 and original rears to front at 58,000 which I know is not the norm!) but I struggle to get into the low 20,000 with this cars original Conti's that I then replaced with Mich' 4S that are now wearing out at about 23,000 miles to 2.5mm tread when change. Do you think the new Goodyear Asymmetric will last longer getting to and maybe over 25,000 miles whilst maintaining a very good feel and handling of 4S? Looking to find a tyre life balance of slightly better longevity over performance considering the 4S costs without over reducing the cars road manners and safety. (4S nice tyre but Conti's poor through never lasting, on a previous pitstop I was told I had done well to get over 18,000 miles as they change Conti's a lot sooner in poorer condition than my'n were!)
