It's hard to imagine a cuter baby animal on the planet than a Black Bear Cub. From the black button eyes to the tiny fuzzy ears this playful mannered baby bear really is the teddy bear of the forest!
Unfortunately their cuteness and curiosity can land them in trouble as they tend to wander into camp sites or backyards following their noses for an easy meal; and it is these situations that often result in dangerous human encounters where innocent observers and bystanders are surprised to find out that Mama Bear is near by and that she will aggressively defend her youngster by any means necessary, including lethal force!
In this particular up close encounter Coyote Peterson is working with Bucky, a 4 month old Black Bear Cub who lost his mother and is now being raised in captivity as an educational ambassador. However don't let his playful disposition fool you, with razor sharp claws and a full set of teeth Bucky is already built to be a top predator! This is one wild hangout that you aren't going to want to miss!
Breaking Trail leaves the map behind and follows adventurer and animal enthusiast Coyote Peterson and his crew as they encounter a variety of wildlife in the most amazing environments throughout North America!

I’ve personally had quite a few encounters with black bears, I respect them as predators and don’t go looking for them, but call them Giant Forrest Dogs. If you feel threatened, get big and hold ground, if you don’t which I never have with them close, just keep moving. Have had Cubs follow and try to play with me, I just scatter some granola to distract them slip off to avoid any altercations with momma unnecessarily. Sweet creatures, I’ve always just admired and kept moving without problems.

I totally get why you'd want to detract cubs (and their mother) from following you, but I hate the thought of people feeding bears, or any wild animal :( at least you have a reason...

Funny enough black bears are notoriously flaky parents, mostly compared to grizzly bear anyway. The momma bear danger isn't is big with them as mothers are often reported abandoning cubs when trying to capture them. Obviously still a good idea to avoid unecessary contact with cubs

    • @forthexp8649
      @forthexp8649 2 роки тому +2

@@NeutralGuyDoubleZero it's entirely situational, mostly dependent on how large of a threat you pose, and the likelihood of the mother successfully protecting her cub. Capture *teams* (key word there) have the advantages of reconnaissance, technology, and usually the element of surprise. Yes, the mother will retreat a large majority of the time in that case. The type of situation the OP is talking about here is the most dangerous, the innocent curiosity of black bear cubs is one of the biggest dangers to hikers in my area.

The first time I saw a black bear in the wild he was sitting three feet away.
I was on a hike through some woods where we were camping. We wanted to find a nice place for a picnic and found one on the side of beautiful stream. There were large flat rocks that were warmed up by the sun through a break in the thick canopy, and we laid out our picnic blanket and set up our lunch. There were lots of rocks like the one we were sitting on and I knew other people had eaten here shortly before us, as they left half a watermelon sitting on another rock. About five minutes into our mean we heard some rustling in the bushes a few feet away, and the nose of a black bear broke through the thicket, sniffing at the air. Both my parents were experienced hikers so they knew better than to freak out. Though we had more food, the bear made his way to the sweet watermelon and sat on the rock and ate his afternoon snack. He looked over at us a few times, I remember making eye contact as I ate my sandwich and he ate his fruit. When he was done, he crossed the stream and went into the woods and out of sight.

All ages of bears in enclosures, (its super huge so they have a ton of room for bear stuff) you can buy apples and throw them over for the bears to it it’s so cute. they have the cubs to where you can feed and pet them and take pictures. It’s honestly an amazing experience .

One time in the foothills of California, me and my friend left the store they own. We turned out from the doorstep, and 10 feet away on the sidewalk, was a brown black bear walking the other direction. We had just missed it by 10 feet. Now, there had been MANY black bears from the mountains above us that had to travel down to find water (we were in a major drought) and to flee from wildfires in the area. So it became quite common to see them (about 2-3 bears a day), but this bear was the biggest one out of all of them!

When i was 7, i was at my grandmas house in Wisconsin and walking in the woods when i found a pretty fully grown black bear. He was about 10 or 20 yards away and looked me straight in the eye. i then flipped the fuck out and ran as fast as i possibly could back to my grandmothers house screaming "BEARBEARBEARBEAR". I thought the bear was gonna chase me but when i looked back, he was actually right where i found him just sitting there and looking at me like i was crazy and then continued walking through the woods and scavenging around. Awesome experience!

I live in Alberta, and a couple years ago my mom and I were driving around Kananaskis on her birthday like we usually do. She LOVES bears and had always wanted to see one in the wild, and though he had seen one a few years back in Banff, it was quite a ways away and we didn't get to see it too well. But as we were driving through Kananaskis, I saw what looked like a big, shiny black rock, and made my mom stop the car. Turned out it was a mother black bear and two cubs! They were so sweet, completely unbothered by our car being no more than 20ft away from them, just eating some berries on the side of the road. It absolutely made her birthday!

I grew up on 400 acres every summer. we had bears, bobcats, deer, elk.... it was beautiful raw land. one summer I went hiking up an old trail up to my favorite spot, a nice natural spring area with this amazing rock out cropping. i was there for about 10min, when this tiny cub came down for a drink. i watched for minutes before reality set in. I started looking around and mama bear was about 20ft away, looking dead at me. i did as I was taught. got up slowly, never breaking eye contact and walked backwards till I was out of sight. I turned and ran like I never had before. she didn't follow. one of the coolest and scariest moments of my life. i wish more people could have those experiences. i think they would respect nature more. my time on the property connected me to nature.

My grandpa was a vet and we raised an orphaned black bear cub when I was a kid. It was a lot of work! We had him in an old rock barn on the edge of our property where we joined a national park. It was a long ways to walk with his food and water twice a day. Grandpa fixed up a den for him in there out of an old wooden barrel.
That cub grew bigger and more rambunctious by the day. We tried to limit our contact with him once he was off a bottle but we still had to go in his enclosure to clean up after him. He would bite the fire out of you if you didn’t watch him. We celebrated when we finally released him both for him getting back into the wild and us not having to keep him up anymore.
We released him the following Spring. We opened the door of the barn and left food for him. He came and went for weeks eating the food we left out then finally he left and never came back.
He had a big V shaped blaze on his chest and I thought I saw him on our farm years later, chasing a deer that was trying to fawn in one of fields. If it was him, he had certainly grown into a brute of a blackie.

We every so many years go to the Smoky Mts in TN for a vacation, staying in a cabin. My dad is an early riser, and quickly and quietly woke all ten of us up one morning to go outside: only five yards away were a mama Black Bear and her two cubs in a tree in the cabin's backyard. We were on the porch watching (we were on a hill, so if she felt threatened, we could easily go back in the cabin before she could reach us) the cubs at first took a nap and then began to eat stuff in the trees while the mom kept watch of them. It was VERY cool to see. Eventually she and her babies left after an hour of hanging out. The mom never seemed bothered by us but we made sure to stay quiet when we moved and talked so we could enjoy their little visit.

When we still had the swamp next door before they put in a huge development, we had a momma black bear who hibernated every year in this huge dirt mound with a hole in it in our back yard. As kids, we weren’t even that bothered by the fact that the back yard was off limits until she and the cubs left every year because we got to watch the babies flounder around and practice pouncing every spring. We’d sit at the living and dining room windows watching the bears every winter/spring for HOURS! They were always so cute, and watching them grow every year was so cool to see. A few years we also had lots of deer constantly passing through every day in the winter. The only thing that sucked was the year of the cougar. That was a bad one. Lol

When I was maybe 10 or 12, my dad and I were hiking in the woods to find our camping spot for the weekend. We came up on a clearing (this was spring/early summer) and we see this giant golden mass of fur just standing around 100 feet away from us. We both hid behind a nearby boulder and had no idea what it was. I remember thinking: "is it a giant dog? A lost llama? What on earth is this?" I lean over to my dad and whisper what it is- suddenly, it's head perks up and stares right at us for maybe 3 seconds, then bounds off. That was the first time I had ever encountered a cinnamon black bear!

My parents used to have a place up in Canaan Valley, WV which was essentially like a little piece of Canada in the mountains and we used to see these guys all the time. The most memorable was coming home from dinner one night we saw a little "dog" running ahead of us in the headlights so we slowed down and as the headlights came around the corner to our drive way there was big ole' momma bear with two cubs waiting on the third cub that was running ahead of our car. Needless to say we stopped and waited a few minutes for them to go on their way. The next day the dad was taking the three cubs down the stream in our backyard showing them how to fish so we got to take a lot of photos from the back porch. It was a really cool place and the animals are pretty oblivious to the humans up there, had a lot of really cool wildlife encounters.

I’ve seen a couple black bears but my best black bear story was in April of 2013. I was trout fishing a river with a few friends. The fish weren’t biting and I noticed my buddy coming down the trail that lead further into the woods heading towards me from about 15 feet down the trail where he was fishing. When he got about halfway to me I noticed just on the other side of the trail (about 5feet) from where my friends still set up fishing pole and tackle was a definitely full grown black bear. I just said “uhhh bear” and we both stared to slowly back our way down the trail till we felt safe enough to watch what it did and after barely examining the fishing pole and tackle then watching us for a couple minutes it finally swam across the river.

Coyote Wild if you read this my encounter was driving down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. Turned a corner, and the Black Bear was sitting on the side of the road. Directly on its butt, back legs out, and front legs werent touching the ground. Literally sitting in proper Human position. Was so funny to drive by it and wave.
This was a TOTALLY wild Black bear no reserves or protection nearby. Sure they scare easy but at the same time some bears are just lazy and curious and love man made roads :D
Next was seeing a grizzly for my first time. Off the highway a moose was struck. Saw a grizzly my first time and not 1, but 4. Mom and her 3 cubs preparing for the hibernation. So cute they walk in line formation biggest to smallest.

My dad and I were cycling on the Green Brier River Trail in WV and a black bear crossed in front of us! Another time, a baby was in the middle of the road and I almost hit it with my car! Very cool. They are the state animal of West Virginia. Beautiful.

I came across a black bear camping. I live in Idaho and surprisingly I was only just outside Boise. Usually they aren't so close to the city. He was so big but I didn't even see him until I was pretty much right on top of him! Once he saw me though he took off running in the other direction, it was quite the experience.

I was in Kananaskis (say that 10 times quickly) in the Canadian Rockies. There was this super friendly black bear who walked behind me while I was on a hike once. He just followed behind me like a foot away, curious as a kitten. He strayed off to sit down and look at me while I took a water break. It was cute! There was snow on the trees above him and it all fell on him, he looked so confused. I of course died of laughter, causing him to walk away in shame.

Black Bears are so common here on Vancouver Island. Soooo many close encounters on our first nations reserve hundreds of miles from nowhere. Sitting in the drive way, one fully grown one was just sniffing away at my (now ex) girlfriends neck, and she just shoo'd it away. And once I was just walking down the road and one came out of the bush heading the same way as me, and we just walked about 200 meters together, less then a foot away from each other until it crossed passed me into the other bush. And at the lake my parents were just chilling having some drinks, and one came out of the bush, strolled up and stuffed his face in my parents cooler looking for something to eat right beside them. They're so docile and common here. Once you learn they're more scared of you, then you are of them, you'll be fine. Black bears specifically though, I know grizzlies and other bears behave more viciously though.
Beautiful creatures though, and so.. Idk, they're just always relaxed, like they know what's up.

You don't want to run since that can trigger a predatory instinct. If it was a grizzly, you would have been lunch. You kinda just want to stay quiet and back up without turning away from it. Black bears aren't exactly too interested in humans though, so a brisk walk would have sufficed.

    • @FatesDecision

actually a black bear is more likely to run you down. It's just less likely to kill you when it does.

myself and a group of friends came upon a black bear ... on a night
hike. it was about 10 feet away from us, pitch black out. it made itself
known by letting out a bone-shaking roar. i have no idea how we
startled it, but our scent in the wind was either against its favor and
it was deaf, or it was napping or something. a friend and i yelled not
to run to the others. the girls ran. the guys formed a line and started
yelling and roaring at it. we took an hour-long detour down the mountain
    that night.

I saw four black bears while hiking at Mt. Rainer. One was a male walking up the mountain. The other three were a mother and two cubs. The mom and Cubs were right next to the trail. Scary... What was good though was that the trip was to bury my grandfather's ashes.

I was out in Wyoming as a kid for a summer camp and we were swimming in a lake when one of the other kids saw two Grizzly cubs on the other side of the lake. We got tf out of there pretty quick especially since we didn't see the mother anywhere. But what we found funny was on our way out the cubs started chasing our van 😂 everyone around the lake was safe and kept their distance but it was a cool thing to see
