So i know for my school we had this club called NHS were you needed a 3.5 GPA (mainly A's) and at graduation you could get a cord (a coloured string worn around your neck) that represents your hard work. Some clubs like volunteering clubs require you to do a minimum number of volunteering (30hrs) at the end of school. When you accomplish those hours you get to wear another cord that is another color to represent your hardwork. Some cords are for prefects and so on So basically cords are worn to represent the students achievements in grades, and extra curriculum activities.
