"I'm not your son, you're not my father", to me, means the two are equals. One man is at the end of his life, while the other is prepared to carry on his legacy by stepping into his role.

It actually came from their times in the British Army. They're both ex servicemen, and when James got deployed, they used to bid each other farewell with those lines as a way of saying "Goodbye, good luck,I love you" without expressing much emotion..the whole British stiff upper lip thing.

Or it maybe he was using self preservation and distancing himself, so his death wouldn't be as painful. I know I tried to do that when my father died, it didn't work.
      The last verse is heartbreaking.
Don't be afraid, its my turn to chase the monsters away, to me is death, we're all frightened of dying and the unknown.
I'll be the last one, and leave the light on, so there'll be no darkness in your heart, staying with him with his hand on his arm till the end, so he's not alone.
A beautiful song and beautifully sung.

This is as raw as it gets. First time singing it to his father who is dying from kidney disease, no auto-tune, just his voice and the raw emotions. This was the first take no cuts! Later they found a donor he got a kidney. This will go down in history as one of the most authentic songs of all time! You can't get any more real than this song.
For the record I've watched other reaction videos to this song and watch big burly biker guys break down into a blubbering ball of tears. It was nice to know I wasn't alone. Lost my dad in 1990 and I'm still dealing with the loss. It's complicated.

James Blunts final song for his dad who is the man sitting with him in the video ....he is at the end of his life with kidney failure. He gave away a kidney years before only to find that he needed one himself. They were both serving in the army, one a commander and one a colonel. Before they went to various war zones James dad would always say, " you're not my son, I'm not your father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye" and James incorporated this line into this song.... Sang in one take to catch the raw emotion, apparently the only person not crying was his dad ! Lol.... Anyway, the song reached the ears of a distant cousin who came forward and was found to be a match for kidney donation thus saving Blunt seniors life ! He remains with us today ! What a story....what a tribute ! ❤

It’s that he is forgiving his father, his father forgives him and they are seeing each other as just men…the monsters are like when you’re a child and are afraid of the monsters under the bed and your parent comes in and scares them away. He’s scaring the monster of death away.

They found a match for his father and he has had a transplant, not heard how it went though. This song gets you right in the heart and makes you evaluate your relationship with your own father. As a military man, who guarded Princess Diana's coffin before her funeral, it is very rare for them to show emotion so this video is something else I love it even if I sob everytime I see it.

I loved your reaction to this amazing, beautiful, emotional song. Frankly, I don't know how James managed to do it. I heard this was the first time he'd sung it to his father who was suffering from terminal kidney cancer, but thank God, they managed to find a distant relative who donated his kidney and his father is still very much with us. Both James and his dad are former British military officers, so I reckon emotions were scarcely exchanged in their earlier years, I'm just guessing, but this song just rips your heart out. The emotions are real and his delivery is real too, so no wonder his voice wavers a bit, I think we can forgive him that.

Greetings, Jay...from the banks of the Mississippi River. Thanks for sharing this reaction of yours to Blunt's 'Monsters'. It was a solid, straightforward reaction to a moving moment in James' life. In that moment...they both realized the father's future was indefinite and failing. A transplant has altered the trajectory...but the message would stay the same. I'm sensing that you're young enough to still feel the role of 'son' to a father. People are often well into mid-life before they really start unraveling themselves from the expectations and meanings of the roles that biology begins...but culture defines. Many sons have significant issues with many dads, who in their efforts at doing something for which there is no training and there is minimal support...are often living on an edge of almost terror that something will go wrong for a child, a family, their well-being, their future. Lacking training...lacking support...many fathers find the easiest response to a boy to be attempting control...and sons underneath that dominance...want much to be seen, understood, and valued as they are. James' video captures many of the complexities of relationship. Aging offers us the capacity to step outside the expectations that culture..in the form of our 'herds'...demands we carry. But it's work, because the training of expectations intertwined with memory and the stories of others...expects of us oh so much. I'm 67...my father is 94...and we've been in the 'we're just two men' phase for a some time. We did the work...to lay down the expectations...judgments...dysfunctions. I might offer another way to view what you were calling 'deep'...and that is to see in feelings like James...and you ability to feel it...simply 'illumination'. Note how easy it is to feel it. Note how easy it was for him to let the tears be visible that enabled you to see how he felt. Note any efforts internally to not be visible with your own tears. In many ways, the only 'depth' involved is how many masks and costumes do we wear to keep our real and honest emotions invisible to the rest of the world....for what reason? Tear the mask off any hurt...the mask of "I'm okay. I've got this under control'...and the real pain and accompanying suffering is right there...not deep...just hiding beneath the masked images we try to project. Think of how so many images of 'being a man'...sell the masks of being invisible.
Thanks for reaction. You might enjoy two other pieces of his that give two other pieces of his perception...'Bonfire Heart' sang at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony and 'No Bravery' one his early anti-war songs. Have a great holiday. mark

His dad has stage 4 kidney disease he desperatly needs a kidney but you know how transplant lists go. No guarantees. Saying hes not the son etc is a symbolic way to say that hes not a little boy thats dependant on his father and will be in a bad way without him. Theyre two grown men and at their age the father son relationship is a friendship.

  • @TimHaston
    @TimHaston 2 роки тому +4

Son and father have a formal bend. James and Dad were both military, so I partly take that as he's talking to him stripping away that formality. It's also a beautiful juxtaposition because it implies they are equals "we are just two grown men..." Then just a few lines later he calls him daddy... Then a few lines later says it's his turn to chase the monsters away... The whole idea of comforting his dad as one would a child going to bed, but his dad to his eternal sleep. I feel it shows his vulnerability, trying to step up to be the man, but still wanting his dad to lean on... Watch the end again .. the thing I saw on another reaction video comment is that the dad pats his arm at the end. The whole song is essentially: dad, it will be ok. But in the end dad comforts his son yet again.
A couple other details I read is James wrote this, sang it for the first time in front of the cameras with dad there. It was done in one take, and he wouldn't let producers fix his vocals post production. He wanted it to be raw and real.

Men do not talk about emotional issues, they get ignored. Men are more like giving each other a slap on the back and getting another beer from the fridge, this kind of emotion does not enter into the everyday relationship. This is why now that his dad is dying, he drops all the pretenses and lets his emotion out by saying he is not his son and his father is not his father but two grown men saying goodbye, discussing issues they normally would avoid.

You're a young person so let me explain the, "I'm not your son, you're not my father" bit. They are BOTH adults now, still a son and a father, but equal as adults. So he's saying goodbye to his father as two GROWN MEN would say goodbye, not a child anymore....Understand?

It is a good test this video. If you dont have a real physical responding to it, you are lacking in the empathy dep. But, I mean, many doing reactons here are narcs, so good on you
