Electric vs V8 hill climb in a Land Rover

- This week we take a trip over to the inaugural Lucas Classic Event at the historic Shelsley Walsh hill climb. We were lucky enough to have some lovely weather for the event so drove the Tesla powered Land Rover over and raced it up the hill as many times as we were able. As it wasn't a competitive event none of the runs were timed but that didn't stop everyone pushing the cars to their limits.
There were some lovely cars on show and we took the opportunity to show you a few of our favourites in this episode.

Fabulous.
That run in the electric Land Rover made him look like a proper old formula one race driver in the seat of a track race truck,
with that giant steering wheel and spacious area.
Britpart Land Rover my fav of the day, Eleccy Landy 2nd. The unofficial Times were as follows Britpart land Rover 8:53 - 9:33 = 40secs. The Electric Land Rover 10:31 - 11:11 = 42 secs. You can make up your own minds about the why there was an obvious 2 secs difference as explained at the end of the video 11:41. Great fun!
I think another part which wasn't discussed, is the ability to drive the cars fast.
The Britpart has bucket seats, proper harnesses, and a small steering wheel.
The electric has a bench, lap belts, and a steering wheel big enough for a tractor.
They weren't able to concentrate on driving fast because they were constantly trying to stay in their seats while trying to keep the steering wheel in the proper direction.
I've done some sprint hill climbing ... and there's no way I would go up without full belts! Mighty impressive though!
There is one way: running up.

Hill climb? OK, I'm a Yank and hill climbing events mean something totally different over here. I would definitely not call any of that "off-road" as "off-road" makes me think of a snorkel for driving through water crossings up to your hood, crawling up rocky hills, etc. And the Rover is certainly capable of all of that. The Lotus and the Jaguars, not so much. With that said, it looked like a fun event to watch - or drive fast in. My first car was a 1963 MG Midget that I had to do an engine swap on which I paid for with my paper route money. I love those British cars, both on display and having a chance to let it rip even for a short bit. The sound of well built and balanced engines was music to my ears. It was audible poetry in motion. Fun. Thanks.

Can't beat an electric car. They are the best.
Of the two, your Land Rover provided the loudest, most sustained screams. And electrical power just has to be better than recycled dinosaur dinners! No racket, stink or pollution, apart from the tyre rubber, and it still looks like a standard Landy. Can you do the same run next year in the 'Lightning Bug', to show how it performs? The fact that the electric was even put up against the full race LR speaks volumes. Interesting comparison. I’d love to have tried those myself. I’ve been a passenger in Gen2 Hemi Satellite, and a Model S. The S was so much faster since the drive train didn’t need to spool up. It just went.

I've only just noticed there's no seatbelts in your defender?
Surely they were standard fit when that left the factory?
Edit: looked back at a previous video - lap belts only. Should be easy to upgrade to proper, safer 3 point belts?

Imagine if the e power rover had the racing body chassis and suspension parts on it. Love ol gas powered performance vehicle. But e power is the future for customer cars n race cars.

That MG was beautiful and the E-Type I’ve always liked but for me, the Series 1 Landys get it. As the off-roader racing beast, that was something to watch. But the Landy that still looks like one but has Tesla under the bonnet gets my vote.
Never tire of seeing how quick your Land Rover is. You can actually see just what a blistering launch the thing has...

As much as the sounds of a gas engine are bone rattling, I love the pure quiet power of an electric!
Some electric’s sound like jet engines while they actually jet! Loud is cool until its getting beat by something quieter. Then its just embarrassing.
@@adamd5013a v8 roar is far better than any satisfaction you would get from passing someone. All you have to do is blip the throttle when your exhaust is pointed at them and they loose all of their confidence or they get intimidated by the sound and stay back. Only other drives I even worry about are other v8s everyone is just peasants.

Hp makes a difference. The electric Land Rover handle as well as the titanic. Who cares what the drive train is, when you cant stay tire down.

I would want at least a seat belt if not a complete racing harness in the electric beast.
Being an old gear head I like the ICE engines, but yours is my favorite.
A real sleeper-fast and quiet. Just imagine if you put some suspension and better tires on that thing and removed some of the unnecessary weight.

Can't believe you were happy to go up at that speed in an open truck with no cage or belts...
I love that lightning power Landy, but I can’t believe you’re racing it with only lap belts. If it’s faster than a mid-mounted tubular chassis race car down the straight, you should really be running with at least a 5 point harness. You don’t want your/your passenger’s heads/arms/legs flailing out of the vehicle during a roll over accident. 😳
Lol!!!! All you like to talk about is just 0-60 while the V8 was overall faster and the Tesla powered one even more than 350hp!
It would have been fair to compare two almost exact vehicles with V8 and electric motor.
@@carholic-sz3qv one is a traditional 50s design Landy, they other is a tubular chassis race car. If you put the Tesla drive train in the V8 chassis it would be infinitely faster than the ol’ euthanasia smoke machine.

They were both somewhat slower than the hill record at 22 seconds. 😬😬
