@Oz - oh, no question. Their marriage was fucked up too but T and 'mella weren't nearly as fucked up as Janice and Ritchie. Janice was a pain in the ass at all times and fake as hell -always full of it. It would suck to have a sibling like that. Tony was less crazy. And Ritchie was just nuts, period. I hated his character more than anyone else by far (I guess that means great acting - either that or he's a bit cray cray in real life so he's familiar with the territory).
Actually Carmella & Tony seemed like a marriage "made in heaven". She had the ability to reflect at times, was loyal , supporting and loves her children and husband but at the same time she is willing to sell any tiny bit of moral outrage for some more dollars. Also she love the perks of being a crime boss wife, threatens people , puts one over even her friends if it suits her because she is the boss wife. Perfect match for a crime boss. Tony is what she wants in life and Carmella is Tonys rock in all this chaos providing a normal life at home. Most telling scene is when she reflects on her life with Tony and all his misdeeds and all she can come up with is him cheating, when she has a mass murdering criminal as husband. Then she sells that reflection for 50 000$ to secure Meadows spot. When Tony wants to even out things he just has to buy something. So yes these two are a match made in heaven. Perfect for each other.
I love the contrast of Tony stressing out and cleaning up a murder, but Carm needs three weeks off because a dentist appointment and Tennis clinic are a bridge too far.

Even though he's not a good guy, I can feel the weight of working out everything for everyone on Tony's shoulders. The isolation is something I never thought could be captured on screen, and yet there he was bringing it plain for everyone to see, a true acting titan.
What amazing irony in one scene. "That was not a marriage made in heaven". She then describes the horrible sham their own marriage is. Brilliant writing.
This scene is so perfect, in illustrating Carmela's complicity in her husband's criminal life. She knows what goes on, but can't force herself to leave him. She has chosen her life and is content with it, no matter how she may let on, at times. Great scene by the two most important characters in this wonderful series.
Even the way Tony moves his hand when he says 'gone' says something. His tired voice sounds like someone who was up all night too. Absolutely incredible acting.
I loved how Carmella was the only person who could really tell Tony off or tell him something he didn't want to hear, and he wouldn't really do anything about it.

The "I will commit suicide" line from Carmella was great. That's what Tony's girlfriend threatened him with and Carmella heard it. Tony didn't know that.
My absolute favorite scene ever from The Sopranos. "After 18 years of marriage...don't make me make you an accesory after the fact." Superp dialogue and great acting. I only wish that I could have spent a moment with Mr. Gandolfini and had a beer and a chat with him, God rest his soul. He is deeply.
@@sliceserve234 Absolutely. Gandolfini gets the lion's share of the accolades, and deservedly so. But Edie Falco also brought her _A_ game to the Sopranos. This scene is just one example out of so many that shows what an amazing actress she is and how much she contributed to the show.
I gotta think that even if I wasn't married to a mafioso, I'm pretty sure I would figure out what Tony meant by "he's gone" quicker than Carmela did here
The scene before this when Tony tells Janice how Richie was buried, on a hill, overlooking a river, with pine cones all around him, and Janices facial expressions was fucken GENIUS. RIP.
The reason so many people loved Tony Soprano despite being a psycho killer was the fact that he was carrying so many people, his wife, his kids, his "family" his sister and mother, they all were depending on him and I think most people in this modern society feel the weight of that burden of being the guy so many other depend on. In the end, the stress was killing Tony and it destroyed his relationships.
What else are you supposed to do? Your husband’s in the Mafia and you typically aren’t encouraged to start some sort of gossip group about the entire affair. Carmella doesn’t really give enough of a shit to fight with Tony anyway because he’s not gonna say anything about it. She might’ve liked Richie but her hands are automatically tied because of the Omertà philosophical code of conduct, so that’s why she drops it pretty quick.
Carmela's demeanor mixed with her wit makes her one of my if not my favorite character on this show. "Because if I have to do it Tony, I just might commit suicide" then walks away.
I love how this scene was laid out. Tony sitting on one side of the couch and Carmela sitting on the other. Tony wearing dark/grey colors and looking worn out while Carmela's wearing red and looking somewhat empowered. And I loved the irony of Carmela's line, "That wasn't a marriage made in heaven."
Wonderful observation! Especially regarding the colors of their clothing and how they match their moods. I often completely miss things like this in movies.
Yeah you can really see how Tony is wearing himself out so Carmella can have what she has and be immaculate. Who is suffering/paying for who becomes obvious. I also see some symbolism in how carmella places the dirt on her shoes directly in front of us. It can symbolize the path she treads on and how dirty and callous it is, and how she walks on it all the time, yet is oblivious to its filth while the dirt is apparent to everybody else. The mafia lifestyle is kind of like carmella's flashy high heels, she likes the way it looks to her but she ignores what's under it.
This one scene has more dramatic intensity than many feature films out there. And that could be said for so many scenes in The Sopranos. Incredibly high quality scriptwriting, acting and directing.
"That was not a marriage made in heaven." One of the top 2 or 3 lines in the whole series. It encapsulates the whole relationship between Tony and Carmela.
The funniest line in this entire show, or at least in the running, after this Tony questioned Janice about her choice in men and Janice shot back since when is my personal life your business? The greatest comeback line of all time: "I think it is my business Janice, since your last boyfriend I had to haul out of your house in a Hefty bag". I laughed so hard, I nearly pissed myself.

I loved watching her as nurse Jackie. How did they find such great script writers?! This show could NOT succeed without a fantastic script and that's part of why it's so damn good.
Man he was such a gifted actor. He plays the roll of Tony Soprano so good. You don't realize until you watch 3 or 4 of his movies. I loved this show it was a big part of my life for ten years. I also miss him that's to bad way to young to go.
absolutely a great actor, my brother & I used to watch this show every week. sadly my brother has also passed away, I can't watch a rerun & not think of him & how we enjoyed those times together. R.I.P Chuck Brewster and James Gandolfini... 🙏
For those that don't know, accessory after the fact in this case means that if Tony had told Carmella what had happened to Richie, she'd have become an accomplice to the act if she hadn't reported it, which she would have become, because Carmella wouldn't have turned against Tony. She'd have covered up for it and if she were ever questioned by the police, they could have found a way to get Carmella to explain what happened and then she'd be charged with the crime of concealing what had gone down.
There was nothing for Carmella to help cover up. Hearing an admission does not make her an accessory. Then, re the asmission, there’s the marital communications privilege.
Carmella was never really viewed to be as cold, savage, and selfish as Tony. But this is a great scene that really shows that Carmella actually could be cold, savage, and selfish. Now I’m sure she didn’t care for Richie, but he was still a human being who is no longer alive. And to go from the shock once she realized what happened to him to nonchalantly talking about a trip to Rome in just a matter of seconds was just savage. It was the equivalent of her just saying: “Well that sucks. So anyway, I’m going to Rome.” 😂 She could be ice cold in my opinion. Great character and Edie Falco is an amazing actress! The Sopranos is the greatest show to have ever been on television in my opinion.
To me this is a top scene for the show. It puts their entire marriage into perspective. I think it shows the true distance they have fallen over the years married but that seems to work for Carmella & Tony somehow.
Ghost...how has that area around Caldwell held up? Just doing the google maps drive by a lot of areas look pretty nice just going through the town, but you go a little ways out and it gets pretty rough.
The best part of this brilliant scene is the ending with Eurythmics’ I Saved The World Today. Delicious irony. Chase just knew how to use music for this show.
Tony’s reaction to that ‘heaven’ remark is priceless. A combination of a child’s catholic belief and a cynical outlook of a crook. This mob ambiguous outlook has been observed on many film/shows but this Gandalf of expressions-acting delivers it with a nod and a look. Superb.
The way Edie Falco and James Gandolfini acted, you'd think that they actually were married! Their relationship and natural talent was a hallmark of every season of The Sopranos! I have a good mind to start watching the entire series again. For the thousandth time.
Always hated how the mafia wives were willfully blind to the violence and death that surrounded their husbands and marriage while taking advantage of the fruits of crime and occasionally moralizing about their husbands infidelity.
Carmella didn't seem to allow the fact that her husband's sister killed her fiancee affect her trip to Rome. She was like oh wow and 30 seconds later, she's back to normal, thinking about she's going crazy and needs a vacation. You'd think hearing news like that would throw her off her game for longer than 30 seconds.
JohnLoCicero it doesn't really affects that much, and it's fine, it's not like she's super close to Janice, besides, even if it affected her , she has to move on, and what better to get away from that mob life for a while than a trip?
Yeah it shows that really she was a problem too. She knew who tony was and chose him.. all of a sudden one day she decides shes gods gift to earth and a step above the rest and suddenly tony's habits were a problem. Ofcourse all the jewelry/nice house/cars/food and money available to fuck off and go to rome for 3 weeks of shopping wasnt an issue.. not at all. She was just as bad if not worse than tony.
The truly funny thing about this scene is that Carm had been feeling legitimately JEALOUS over Janice and Richie’s apparent newfound love xD I never noticed before but Tony actually makes a his hand into a gun briefly when he tells Carm for the second time that Richie is “gone”.
The Eurythmics “I Saved The World Today” was used for the closing credits. Perfect choice for that episode and everything Tony did to cover Janice’s tracks.
@@Bentom86 That's what I thought from the moment I saw it. Brilliant, brilliant scene. Shame the song wasn't included in this clip. Copyright issues, perhaps.
I was surprised that these two were not close off the screen. Yet, on the screen, they acted perfectly as if they had been married for ages. No awkwardness, no exaggeration … just right. The Soprano team of onscreen and offscreen crew are legend.
I read somewhere that Edie Falco chose not to socialize much with the other cast members. Not because she didn't get along with them; she's a recovering alcoholic and the cast often partied after shooting. She didn't want to risk falling off the wagon.

What amazing irony in one scene. "That was not a marriage made in heaven". She then describes the horrible sham their own marriage is. Brilliant writing.
if you find this marriage a sham ... then 90% of US marriages a sham!
I am just mad because she killed him while he wasn't in the mood :'(
Their marriage wasn’t a sham he really loved her it’s just things happen after a few decades
This scene is so perfect, in illustrating Carmela's complicity in her husband's criminal life. She knows what goes on, but can't force herself to leave him. She has chosen her life and is content with it, no matter how she may let on, at times. Great scene by the two most important characters in this wonderful series.
Carmela is brilliant throughout and your analysis is spot on.
Does Carmella understand that Janice killed Richie in this scene?
No I don't think so.
Craig: That's a very good question and I think the answer is yes, she does. Her saying it wasn't s marriage made in heaven hints at this.
Ever notice sometimes Carmela looks extremely fuckable and other times she's totally groos!
The facial expressions, the delivery and dialogue are just perfect. One of the best scenes in the sopranos. Actress playing Carmela is perfect.
Even the way Tony moves his hand when he says 'gone' says something. His tired voice sounds like someone who was up all night too. Absolutely incredible acting.

The funniest line in the entire show.
He was a killer but I don’t think he was a full on psychopath although he did have some of the tendencies
Didn't take long for Carmela to forget about Ritchie and continue on with her own concerns.
Ritchie's the kinda asshole worth forgetting.
Who gives a flying fuck about Richie, why she should care?

I love how this scene was laid out. Tony sitting on one side of the couch and Carmela sitting on the other. Tony wearing dark/grey colors and looking worn out while Carmela's wearing red and looking somewhat empowered. And I loved the irony of Carmela's line, "That wasn't a marriage made in heaven."
Wonderful observation! Especially regarding the colors of their clothing and how they match their moods. I often completely miss things like this in movies.
@@Jac0bIAm Carm could give 2 shits less about Richie, all she cares about is going to Rome LMAO !!
Very good Jason, the sacred and the propane...

I laughed so hard, I nearly pissed myself.

absolutely a great actor, my brother & I used to watch this show every week. sadly my brother has also passed away, I can't watch a rerun & not think of him & how we enjoyed those times together.
She'd have covered up for it and if she were ever questioned by the police, they could have found a way to get Carmella to explain what happened and then she'd be charged with the crime of concealing what had gone down.
how would the police now that tony told her?
There was nothing for Carmella to help cover up. Hearing an admission does not make her an accessory. Then, re the asmission, there’s the marital communications privilege.
Also Tony didn’t kill Ritchie. That was all Janice.
It's almost as if she could walk around in her $500 shoes and diamond rings and act as if butter didn't melt in her mouth.
To me this is a top scene for the show. It puts their entire marriage into perspective. I think it shows the true distance they have fallen over the years married but that seems to work for Carmella & Tony somehow.
Brilliant scene from a class episode. Great choice of music on the close out. Maybe I'm due another rewatch. RIP Jim

I thought it was one of the best scene/music matches in the whole series and was so sad when the clip cut right before the music really kicked in.
Tony’s reaction to that ‘heaven’ remark is priceless. A combination of a child’s catholic belief and a cynical outlook of a crook. This mob ambiguous outlook has been observed on many film/shows but this Gandalf of expressions-acting delivers it with a nod and a look. Superb.

Good point but it's only an hour episode. No time for grieving before setting up the next one! ha.
Well , as Tony pointed out it's not in her best interest to talk about it .So what can she do? She knows what Tony does. Why not change the subject
She must know these kind of things happen. Close relatives and friends 'go' all the time in their family's line of business.
JohnLoCicero it doesn't really affects that much, and it's fine, it's not like she's super close to Janice, besides, even if it affected her , she has to move on, and what better to get away from that mob life for a while than a trip?
