  • I've always heard people speak high praise of THE SANDMAN comics but I'd never read them. As a novice, I'm excited to experience this world Neil Gaiman crafted with fresh eyes! #TheSandman #Sandman #Netflix
    The Sandman is an American fantasy drama television series based on the 1989-1996 comic book written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics. The series was developed by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg for the streaming service Netflix, and is being produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television. Like the comic, The Sandman tells the story of Dream, the titular Sandman. It stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, with Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry, and Sanjeev Bhaskar in supporting roles.

    About the name: his name is Dream, as well as his designation as one of the Endless. As the personification of dreams, he has different names from different mythology through history. Morpheus is the Roman god of dreams, so the name also applies to Dream. It’s all just different terms for the same being.

      Yeah, he's called by many names during the comic's run depending on who's talking to him, usually the name of that character's culture's god of dreams.

    Dream is one of the Endless. He is also known as the Sandman, Morpheus, the Oneiromancer, K'aickul, the Prince of Stories, etcetera etcera. The other Endless are Destiny, Destruction, Death, Desire, Despair, and Delerium (formerlu Delight).
    Boyd Holbrook is such a good villain. I remember repeatedly having to tell myself in "Logan," he's just some dude with a robot hand, calm down, that isn't scary compared to some X-Men. But I did have to keep reminding myself of that, because he was such a great villain anyways.
    One of the things Neil Gaiman included was to mine old DC properties that they hadn't used for decades and didn't have any plans for. Cain was the host of the "House of Mystery" horror comic, Abel hosted "House of Secrets." Kind of how like the Crypt Keeper hosted "Tales from the Crypt," introducing and narrating each horror story in the anthology. Even the oldest of the Endless, Destiny, originally had a similar comic from way back when.

    "Dream of the Endless" is kind of his "real name", "Morpheus" is one name he's known as, as well as Kai'ckul, Oneiros, L'zoril, etc.
    and "Constan-tyne" is the correct pronunciation of that name. John gets annoyed at people saying "Constan-teen" in the comics, and corrects them. there's pretty frequent pronunciation guides in the comics, in one form or another, actually

    Despite the live action series being adapted in a way to distance it from other DC materials (and the potential resulting legal entanglements), Gaiman was given a lot to work with when he started the Sandman comic, which he went on to make his own. For example, The House of Mysteries and The House of Secrets were comic book horror anthology series started in the 1960's, in which Cain and Abel served as the respective narrators. Similarly, John Dee was the real name of DC villain Doctor Destiny, who used the Dreamstone as his weapon long before Gaiman wrote its origin as a tool created by Dream of the Endless.

    But Lucien was a raven, once, hence her focus on that. The implication, as all ravens are former mortals, that Lucien (in the comics) was Adam. But the raven woman in the comics is Eve, and I am wondering if they have combined the two ideas into Lucienne

    I'm devastated at the sacrifice of Gregory. It feels like Morpheus took a shortcut to getting his power back. He didn't even try to find another way. This was nothing more than a plot device to elicit empathy from the viewer and to move the story forward. While I did feel sad about the gargoyle, the emotion that hit me harder was anger and disgust with Morpheus. If you choose to sacrifice an innocent for your own gain, you are not a good person. I lost all sympathy and respect for Morpheus when he did that. Leaving the egg for Cain and Abel was merely an attempt to assuage his own guilt because he knew that murdering Gregory was wrong. Morpheus may be the protagonist here, but he's not the hero.

    • @justarandomveryintelligent8934
      @justarandomveryintelligent8934 2 роки тому +10

      In the comics morpheus has never been presented as a hero. He, like his siblings, is a force of nature. You wouldnt judge a hurricane if a house was in its path. What makes morpheus different is he can learn.

    • @urikorsikov843
      @urikorsikov843 2 роки тому

      @@justarandomveryintelligent8934 A hurricane or other natural force isn't a creature capable of reason or emotion. The very fact that he left the egg indicates that he knew that he did something wrong and he felt guilty. A force of nature isn't going to build you a new house after it tears yours down. Regardless of the way The Endless may have been portrayed in the comics, I have seen no evidence of that quality in the show. Morpheus feels more like a neutral god who has a very questionable moral code. Even if the protagonist is not a hero, an audience needs to be able to identify with them. It's the reason stories are told from that perspective. The movie Joker is a good example of a story being told from the perspective of someone who has historically been portrayed as a villain. Despite his violent actions, you sympathize with him. You understand him. You might even condone what he does because it's his story that you followed so you understand the root of his psychopathy. In stories, the protagonist is the audience. If a protagonist is committing acts that most audiences would not commit, you risk alienating them. I'm still curious where this story goes, but right now I'm feeling alienated from the character I'm supposed to sympathize with. In the first episode I was very sympathetic. He had been imprisoned and his raven murdered. Those who did that were justly punished. Then in the second episode, Morpheus kills Gregory. Now he's no better than those who imprisoned him. I haven't watched further than this so hopefully I'll change my mind as the story progresses.
