This rule should be tiered depending on the boat hull type and size. For example, that Mod V Vexus barely throws any wake at all, the rule for non-deep V hulls should only be like 150' from the shoreline. Just because big obnoxious hotel room sized boats throw large wakes doesn't mean all boats do.
