What makes a perfect anchorage? Obviously beautiful surroundings and a sense of isolation. Also crystal clear water and space to explore ashore. But maybe the most important thing about a perfect anchorage is when the journey to get there is a difficult one. We’re currently on a mission to explore the South West Coast of Turkey. This region is full of breathtaking scenery and pristine anchorages. But it’s also renown for unpredictable weather and challenging anchoring conditions. This week after sailing through strong winds we find one of our favorite anchorages of all time. But we hadn’t planned on being off-grid for so long, so as we begin to run out of food we have to figure out some creative ways to survive out here in our own little slice of paradise.

Did I miss something about Isabella’s health and her treatment? She just looks so well and happy these days and you guys seems so much more relaxed with her. Did you get some really good news about her? Certainly the mark on her face is barely visible these days or is it just hidden behind her lovely little tan?

This is called 'Serçe Limanı' I anchored once with my boat while sailing alone; it's a very important underwater archeological site that bw the years of 1977-79 there was a research for a shipwreck which contains beautiful glass objects.. it is displayed in Bodrum Underwater Archeological Museum nowadays.. people in Turkey are very helpful for anything don't hesitate if you need something, love watching your adventures, fair winds..

Having virtually no sailing experience I always find it somewhat funny when a sailor says "its to much wind"! Fetch isn't simply the length of open water currently being transited, it's the distance of water over which winds blows in an essentially constant direction, thus generating swell/waves.

To avoid chafing away at your beautiful yellow polypropylene shore lines, get some 2-3m chains attached into a loop with a quick link. They will neatly fall into place in cracks and even around underwater rock formations (carefully so as to not do any damage to the environment). Then tie off to those chains. I’ve been doing it since 2006. You can also use metal wedges to hammer into cracks and then tie onto them. Climbing gear is quite good to use as well with different nuts and hexes. My boat will be back in the water in 4 weeks time in western Greece, so maybe we’ll meet somewhere.

What a great trail you guys found, it’s got a great feeling….that looks like a Berm House, that’s partially underground. I looked at some properties that had one on each of them and they were probably used to round up livestock because there were pens with them too. That looks like such a beautiful anchorage, I can see why you want to stay longer, but then you guy’s have always picked the most perfect places to visit , no matter where everyone else is going. I’ve noticed that the places that you choose to visit , say so much about your personality and the way you want to live your life……I like less people, great food and beautiful scenery….. so everywhere you have been!! 🍀

Desiere - that building for me is kind of typical: Some people create a business far away at an anchorage and far away from authorities (Tax office).
We hat a week charter around Bodrum in the season. Nearly every bay had such a restaurant. We visited many, took a lot of money (less than Bodrum or Turgutreis) and was ALWAYS fantastic.
You are there off season so its not feasible to operate it. Maybe later that year.

You guys miss a lot of healthy protein by not fishing or spear fishing. I watch an Australian couple explore uninhabited islands, and they live off of fish they shoot or catch, mud crabs, potatoes, rice, and a few other things they carry on their boat. I follow three sailing channels, and I lost count, but have seen at least a hundred best, most scenic, perfect anchorages since I started watching UA-cam during Covid. I think you were around Boca del Toro at the time, then I went back to your first video and caught up watching an episode each evening. So many perfect anchorages... 😎

In treaty of Lausanne similar really close islands within 3 miles of Turkish coast were ceded to Turkey while the rest of thousands of islands to Greece. So Turkish coast was well covered and Turkish side was happy about the agreement. However not all Aegean islands were Turkish nor Greek back then, southern islands called Dodecanese were Italian so they weren't a part of Lausanne. After WW2 the question was raised, Turkish expectation was that Lausanne would be expanded to southern islands as well so 3 miles Turkish while rest Greek. But Allies ceded all islands to Greece despite Turkish objection and created the situation today.
Turkey officially rejects this and claims all uninhabited islands within 3 miles as its own but it is not enforced unless Greek side tries to militarize those islands. In 1995 a Turkish cargo ship ran aground at one of those disputed islands, Greek coastguard tried to respond as according to them it happened in Greek waters while the cargo ship refused assistance as they thought they were in Turkish waters. It became a military escalation in no time, Greece landed some troops on the island to prove their sovereignty and Turkey responded quite badly and landed their own forces, somehow sides barely avoided a war.
Turkey wasn't a part of treaty of Paris 1947 which ceded those islands to Greece so there is really lawlessness around the region. Those islands worth really nothing, they have zero economic value, in fact vast majority of them are uninhabited. However if you add hundreds of them together with 12 miles territorial waters they become like the great wall, even blocking access of several Turkish ports to international waters including massive İzmir port as remaining Turkish waters not deep enough to allow large ships. So Turkey refuses both Greek sovereignty on those islands and their 12 miles territorial waters, Turkey didn't sign UNCLOS same as US so Greece doesn't have such 12 miles right but still they claim they do. They even increased their airspace from 6 miles to 12 miles while their territorial waters are still 6 miles and became the only country on Earth which has longer airspace than their borders or waters. Ofc Turkey completely refuses this 12 airspace too while acting like Greek airspace is still 6 miles which causes hundreds of "airspace violations" every year. While Greek side considers them as legit violations and often retaliates with their own airspace violations, if Turkish airspace is violated Turkey retaliates by violating legit Greek airspace by entering within 6 miles as well. Honestly it is a miracle there wasn't a war already considering how both countries are acting so ridiculously. And NATO countries should really pressure both countries for lasting solution this is 100% a war recipe..

Great video! Love your family!! As for Symi,or all the land around there, most of that used to be Greek long time ago! So that's why the strange "arrangement"! And to be clear i admit that Turkey is much more boat friendly than Greece and i am not speaking hatefully for Turkey,i just wanted to "correct" you on that comment! Keep up the beautiful videos!! ❤

And i am not speaking hatefully for Greece either but since many people are watching these videos, I don't want them to have misinformation about the issue. All lands around the island have been under Turkish rule uninterruptedly since 1206. After that date no Greek administration has ever been reestablished and local population was mixed Turkish and Greek un until 1920s. So yes it was once Greek. But very very long time ago. Like 800 years ago. As for the island of Symi, it was an Ottoman island from 1522 up until 1912. The indigenous population was again mixed until that date.

@@carolyngrgd8732 What a nice thing to say. I didn't expect that. Thank you very much. I thought you were Greek and was expecting a harsh or sarcastic response. Instead, I get a friendly and polite response from a British or an American (I assume you are British or American). This is the second time this has happened. Cheers!

This coastline has been Greek for thousands of years. Up until the 1920's although it was a Turkish territory, the coastline was still inhabited by ethnic Greeks. So you can't say it's weird these islands are Greek. It is the Turks that pushed back the Greeks. Not the other way around

The territory has been Turkish for close to a thousand years. Yes, Greeks lived on the territory but so did Turks together with them under Ottomans rule. Population exchange at the end of the Greco-Turkish war meant Greeks left Turkey and Turks left Greece
