In notes that went with the first version of this song I heard, I have read that even in the time this song was written, most people knew that whales are air breathing mammals (not fish), they just liked to sing it that way.
The best version of this song I have heard even better than the famous one with Judy Collins and Ted Bickel which was excellent. I think a common fault of many of the great American folk singers of the 50's 60's and 70's is that their versions often lacked sufficient instrumentation-there is a hell of a banjo player on this song.
@gfl1984 I'm 19, and I usually go to Irish pubs (or irish-themed as I don't live in ireland :P) where the people are very friendly, and the music great! :)
I like how the record skips in the beginning but it still sounds nice
Wonderful rendition to a classic sea chantey song!

Fergus O'byrne!
One of the better versions.Losing the men more grievous than losing the whale.
i agree, it seems a bit cold of the captain to care more about the whale which they could just try to catch again than losing 5 of his men

The Corrie Folk Trio also has a good version of this, featuring Roy Williamson on lead.

It's an English traditional song dating back to a broadside ballad of 1725.
