Bro what a great and WEIRDLY perfectly timed video. I had just found my dads old Collectors edition of WOTLK and found a add booklet inside of all WoW's other spinoff projects. Like comic books, board games, and books. That got me curious about them because they were a tad before my time, and I grew up watching and playing wow with my dad so I started looking into all those old products. Low and behold not even 2 days after all that happened NIxxiom comes out with a video reminiscing on a lot of the same things I researched.
5:40 This legit looks very similar to Ragnaros’ boss room at the end of MC. Even has the rocks circling around Rag where the heroes stand while fighting him. That’s awesome.
One great thing about TTRPGs is that even if the product line is discontinued and the books are no longer on the shelves, you can still get a copy from *somewhere* and enjoy them. You don't need a server or an account, just a few friends and you are ready to roll! :)
I actually had a thought about this; Chris Metzen has returned to Blizzard in a creative role. Metzen founded Warchief Gaming to make TTRPG stuff (and apparently Auroboros has had some good reviews). With the rising popularity of TTRPGs thanks to Critical Role, Stranger Things, and now Baldur's Gate 3, do you think there's potential for Blizzard to try to give the RPG another shot?

The irony of you releasing this video. Last night i started looking into DnD 5e to play with my friends after we've been having a blast with BG3. We all played WoW when we were younger and WoW classic more recently so i was trying to see if there was a WoW themed module we could play that I could try to use to get them more likely to try it. And yes, I know DnD 4e is basically TTRPG WoW, we tried Essentials when we were in high school and all it did was make us want to go play WoW instead, but i heard 5e is significantly better.

If you didn't like 4E. You may like 5E or you may find that over time it's become even more bloated and video gamey than 4E. Personally I've run Warcraft campaigns using the lore from the TTRPG books but with Savage Worlds Pathfinder. A Savage Worlds variant that translates many DnD rules to Savage Worlds. Which is a very quick, clean, simple and efficient system for TTRPs compared to DnD. And there's far less bloat from supplements and fan made material you have to wrap your head around.
I've honestly been tempted to make a sourcebook for GENESYS based on it, but I know next to nothing about editing. Even if I managed to pull this off, I'd be afraid of it ending on a Cease and Desist.

When i first found out about wow i looked up a lot of things about it on wow wiki and found out about something called the warcraft rpg. i with my normie millennial mindset thought it was some kind of computer rpg from the windows 95 era but then i found out it was a "board game" .
I remember... I even have a copy. It was just a lousy representation and modeling of the Warcraft Universe. The Vancian/Gygaxian magic system intrinsic to D&D just doesn't work for the world. It would need to be completely rewritten.
I have been trying to explain why classic Wow is different from modern wow. classic wow has a secret sauce to its combat. gracefully (and a bit of luck) found an amazing balance between a turn based game and allowing movement for a simulated action feeling. This combat is inspired and created from TTRPGs like dnd. This video also shows the inspiration and design choices of why and how classic wow is more then just “ nostalgia” Modern wow focuses on blizzards Rotation design for each class by spamming your glowing buttons. and when you miss a button or do it out of order you damage and effectiveness drops dramatically. wow is not intended to be an action based game like Darksouls or New world.
Yeah it had amazing worldbuilding describing things and details that weren't in WoW due to game limitations and world scale. I remember reading about ancient stairs somewhere on the coasts of Barrens that led underwater nobody knows how deep, such a cool concept. Places, landmarks and settlements with amazing lore we never got to see in-game, endless potential to dive deeper into the world of Azeroth and expand it. Thank you Blizzard for creating stuff like Shadowlands instead.

@@jatedin1077 I'm in a similar boat only I was able to actually play the card game and mmo. There were only 2 of us in our group that played the MMO. But as a group we were old enough to learn how to play the tcg and it was heaps of fun. I still have all my cards and collect them to this day if they ever randomly turn up.
Nixxiom, I shit you not, I got the original and the Lands of Conflict books sitting on my desk right now. I intend on getting the entire collection at some point. The WC3 nostalgia is something else.
unfortunately 5e is overly simplified for a TTRPG. the vast majority of your character customisation happens at level 1 with very linear progression from there. its very video gamey. it might fit WoW for that reason but i wish Warcraft RPGing stuck to an RPG that lets you grow and develop your characters skills based on things you wanted them to practice throughout the campaign.

Blizzard did alot of products to promote the game. The RPG, the trading card game, adventure board game, the official board game all which I have copies of except the adventure game. The card game was the only one that had any longevity that lasted until 2013 and thats only cause it sold because of the loot cards. People would literally buy boxes just for the loot cards and trash the rest of the cards. The RPG books are very hard to get ahold of anymore only but luck in an old book store or on ebay for a rather heavy price. Its also worth mentioning that up until one of the blizzcons in the mid 2000s, were really one of the few detailed sources of lore that we had until they were deemed non-cannon. However, there is a full 5E conversion of the WoW TTRPG out there.
