This is glorious! This has been a dream of mine for years.
As a single mom of five kids, two with a terminal disability that impacts their cognitive and physical functions, my divorce and escape from domestic violence has destroyed my credit and I remain on government assistance 7 years later. I hate it and I am trapped in the NJ system because I am limited on my income and limited on what I can save. Therefore, I rent a home for an exorbitant monthly price and no way out.
A dream of smaller living was born of my rural upbringing and now that the kids are growing older, I dream of a place they can actually call home. The challenges of bringing this dream to fruition are significant in NJ because of all of the government regulations, but you have inspired me to dream, and I am grateful. Many blessings to you, from one homeschool homesteading mama to another!!

One thing we're doing that has been a lot more useful than we thought... We put gutters on our house and redirect the rain water into a 2000 liter tank. Then we feed that through a berkey water filter and use it for drinking and cooking. It tastes better than any well or city water we've ever had. In the video it's not clear if you brought in city water or if you have a well. But having a second source of water would be nice either way. If you're on a well and the power goes out, you might not have water. And if you have municipal water, having another source can save you some money. You can also use the rain water for gardening, or if you want to have a source of water that you know is free from chemicals. You can use it to fill animal troughs or swimming pools also.

    • @brianlanning836

@@BetterTogetherLife I'll never live without it again. Make sure you get a tank that isn't translucent. If it's translucent, like an IBC container, you'll have to paint it. You want it as dark as possible inside to fight algae. There's a device you should use, a first flush system. It's a vertical pipe with some kind of float or plastic bottle in it. When it first starts raining, the water fills that pipe first. The float then closes off that pipe so the water can run over it into the tank. You drill a tiny hole in the bottom of the pipe so that it slowly drains off when it's not raining. The idea is to throw away the first water that comes off the roof since that will be washing all the dirt or whatever off your roof. You should also put some window screen over the tank where the water enters. It will keep mosquitoes out and act as a filter for leaves and other things. You'll be amazed how much water you get. With a roof your size, an inch of rain should give you about 1000 gallons. I'm considering making an outdoor shower with a solar water heater fed by our tank.

I paid $10,200 for my 14x40 shed, and bought my daughter, son in law and their new born son the same size. I put both sheds together in an L shape and then a few years later I bought another shed that is a 16x50 and made it mine and husbands new place. Then we connected the first 2 buildings and rearranged some things and by cutting out a hallway and adding a small roof to that part and now it has become a 2 bedroom 2 bath home for them with 1150 square feet. If they have another child they can always get another shed and connect it like we did to make it 1,400 square feet. Around here a plain 1,400 square foot home on 1/8 acre would cost $200,000. But doing 3 sheds we can do it for $50,000. And that’s even buying all new appliances and not repurposed items. Think outside the box and it’s always a win win. Most people want to start large and that’s where they get into financial problems. Each shed we got did not required a credit check and we were able to pay monthly payments for 5 years. Our first one was $485 a month for 5 years and 2 years later we got the 2nd one. Now I’m in the process of building a porch inside the L shaped house to connect both doors to a huge porch for their son to play on and an above ground pool right off the porch for us all to swim. We live beside each other so when I get older my daughter and grandson will be there to help me. Also, If my parents ever need a place to stay at the end of their lives they can always stay with me even though it’s a smaller place because everything is built wheelchair accessible inside the house. Think forward in life and you’ll save a lot of money.

You guys have done a wonderful job. I love it. I feel like we have done everything backwards and everything happened that to prevented us moving forward with our homestead. We have 12 acres and we put our shed on it to convert. And everything and anything happened to prevent us from getting the work done. From illness to taking care of an ill parent to death to cancer and surgery and more death and more surgeries. We got to a point that we just said ok. After fighting for four years to get it done. We let go and took care of the real important things, for family. Things are better. We are sad for the lose of family members and praise God they are cancer free and doing well. I’m happy to say October 31st is my husband s last day at work after being a journeyman electrician for 30 yrs. he’s going back to school to learn a trade that he can make his own schedule. I see landscaping in our near future. And lots of improvement at our cabin. I love it when I look out over our land. It’s the most freeing feeling. I love the deer walking up by the back barn and playing peekaboo with our huskies. I have not laughed that hard in so long. And when it’s so hot you can’t take it anymore then we see our husky push through the back gate and run as fast as she could to jump into the pond. It’s like you are pushed to work as hard as your body will let you. And you think why am I doing this. Then you look up and see the most beautiful site all around you. And it’s all yours. I hope that someone will read this and understand that it’s not easy. Like when you still lived in the suburbs and were paying a thousand a month to get our land and cabin paid off but we did it. And how for two solid years we collected everything we could from habitat for humanity and goodwill and yard sale and the curb. And it’s all our and it looks great. I like it better than our big suburban home with all the showroom furniture in it. It’s pure joy to live an intentional life. Where sacrifice pays off. And it certainly did for you guys! God bless your family and your home! Leslye

James couch it would have been awesome if we had not had to put our homestead on hold. Our problem came in when family we were responsible for lived in another city. And it was not just one family member it was several. But when we made the sacrifice to let go of our own dreams for a while to care for our parents many doors were opened. And it brought me back to an area that I can get help for my psoriatic arthritis mutalins. Mutalins is the most extreme form of arthritis you can have. So for me to have done as much as I have is a miracle. Very soon we will be back at it. Now that my father is cancer free. He had three surgeries and will need one more but he is going to get through it. And almost everything has been handled from my father in laws estate. That was the biggest job we have ever taken on. I’m looking forward to being in our cabin again. And moving forward with plans to improve the land. And there is a boat in our future. We are five minutes to the boat dock of a very large river in Tennessee. If I had it to do over, I would still choose taking care of our family even if it means our desires are put on hold. Family first. And then the blessing pour in. The year we had with my father in law was priceless. I wish we had another year. My dreams may have been on hold but I will not give completely up on them even with severe arthritis. Leslye

The first two weeks we had no plumbing or electric and used the most interesting ways to include washing dishes in tubs also lol. So many things hit home. We were so tired for a few years. Hi there Lisa, thank you soooooo much for your comment.
I honestly had ZERO clue or skills on how to build anything!!! I just started. I bought a basic Ryobi cordless set of tools and I started building stuff. First was a small stool, then some garden beds, and then WATCH THIS VIDEO….
      ua-cam.com/video/vwjyv4ZD5ds/v-deo.html
Skip to the middle of the video and you’ll see how CLUELESS I was about construction. NO IDEA. 🤣🤣🤣 But I somehow figured out how to build “a home for rabbits” way before I figured out how to build a home for humans.
And then of course, I outsourced things like rough plumbing and electric. I don’t care to know those things. And then I found a friend that does construction and I paid him to do some of the work on our home and to use me as his assistant. So I was able to learn even more skills.
But mainly, you just gotta jump in the water!

Possibly east Texas or northeast by Huntsville. I have bought property at the Texas tax deed auctions before so I'm hoping I can find something there and save money. I'm really happy for you guys. You totally inspire me. I want something almost off grid. I have 10k watts of solar power stations for blackouts and some 400 watt solar panels to change the generators. I'd love to grow some vegetables and plant some fruit trees. I hope the S#t doesn't hit the fan but I want to be prepared as much as I can in case. Plus I just love the country and trees like yourself. Enjoy your lives😊

I don‘t want to be a spoilsport but as a swiss architect with plenty experience lookin g at that minimal light weight construction, this is only fun until the next Ida or Kathrina. comes along.
Another thing that I don‘t understand is the lack of real outside shutters to prevent heat from getting into the house, or to keep the heat in in winternights and to protect the windows during storms. Instead we see pictures of people running to a hardware store to fight over plywood with each approaching storm.
BTW foam insulation is banned from the list of ecological building materials, it contains gaz to form the foam. Plus after some years it starts to crumble and loose it‘s capacity to insulate. You could use sheep-wool instead.
All in all I appreciate your effort to live without debt, just a little more savings beforehand would have resulted in a more ecological and longer lasting result.

@@2010sinnamon Well, it's not quite scary, for a shed that's being used as a shed its fine. For a house though, not having a slab or proper concrete bases for the supports will lead to uneven settling, causing cracks in the sheet-rock and doors and windows that don't function properly. To fix that with the house in place is going to be much harder than doing it correctly beforehand.

@@sanautin What are these areas that it's insufficient might I ask? It being originally intended as a shed has NOTHING to do with whether or not it's built to code or can be modified to meet code. The cavity on the back of all trim and molding is there so molding can be glued up.. I use construction adhesive. (liquid nails original) and a commercial 3m holt melt gun..
the intent goes like this.. we prefit and precut all the pieces.. paint the pieces.. glue up by by making quarter sized dots of construction adhesive every 8 inches or so... and then place a few dots of hot melt to provide initial bond.
I realize this takes time.. I realize its way over the top... but it is how its done... I do have customers now I come across from time to time that demand it... I personally dont have it done that way in my home except for around a few doors and it does look amazing when done this way.

Not to mention, zoning laws, etc. I'll have to learn.

Thank you Sherry!! All of the credit goes to Kelly! She designed every inch of our home. I just sort of told her how fast we can build it. 🤣🤣

Love it! I especially dig putting the scrap pile to use to make something useful. That's what the scrap pile is FOR.

The house is really cute, however I imagine the amount of money put into the entire project could have been used to just buy a regular house.

These only cost 9 grand and with 750$ you can get insulation and electrical already done for you. The rest probably costs like 10 grand so 19k is cheap here. Your not finding a house cheaper.

The thing that cost a fortune.. and i mean a fortune is.. the land.. and then getting water and electric back there. I have land out in south Texas on 125 acres. I’ll just say.. I build a house out around 50 acres out from my home as my hunting cabin. House was a small 3 bedroom, 2 restroom. Cost me around $25,000. Now to get water and electric out there cost me another $20,000 alone lol. If I were to assume.. this cost around $150,000. Excluding the land. Now although this is a lot of money.. depending where you live it’s no. A cheap Cali home is $550,000 lol

@@willieoliver1507 $10k just in appliances and lighting. You are also not getting electrical and insulation for $750 that is fit for living in or anywhere close to what these people put in. Seeing how just the electrical panel and breakers for a home is going to run you around that, not even including spray foam. Spray foam is average around $2 a board foot. 15' wide x 40' long x 3" thick x $2 = $3600 just for the roof foam.
Then you have to add in the cost of cabinets, sinks, tubs, tile, counters, flooring, paint, that deck etc.
This project would be comparable to a trailer house in cost and it would have been done in a week or 2 instead of a year.

Nice work. Save yourself some hand agony and cover those exposed cut off cable ends on the stairway. Slip on the stairs and grab at the cable and the exposed cable ends will mess you up.
