I heard some older guy say "You got it Pontiac" a few years ago and I've been saying it ever since; even though I was born in 92 and have never seen the commercials (until now lol).
This was a Canadian marketing campaign. I suspect the car was just dipped in Lake Ontario, a few blocks from GM's Canadian HQ. They save all their salt for winter driving up here.
Man too bad they are gone. The Firebird and the short lived G8 GT were great cars. My mom drives a 2005 Pontiac Montana SV6, great car. I wish I had the money for a Firebird.
The G8 GT was essentially the U.S. version of the Australian Holden Commodore SS; after GM discontinued the Pontiac brand it was sold by Chevrolet dealers as the Chevy SS.
Congrates, I have an '86 Ta with the 305 4 barrel and the 5 speed manual with 304 000 kms on it and she still runs like a top! Like you, Pontiac is the only way to go!
i remember my dad owned the 1985 Pontiac Grand Am and that was an amazing car it lasted years and traveled a long way , it had the 2.5 and that motor was a brick house . when we sent the car to the shreder the inner qorter pannel was rotted right threw but the motor was still puring good , the trany was just starting to go but it had almost 400,000 kms . it was a great car .
Holy shit the commecial playing at 1:08 makes the Trans AM look so bad ass. I think thats one of the few commercials I've seen that actually really makes me want the product even 30 years afterwards!
I bought an '85 GT, red, in August 1985. This was the notched-back model that lasted one year. It was a tidy little package and could really scoot. I didn't mind that it didn't have power steering. Steering effort was never an issue. I traded the '85 Fiero GT relatively soon. Under two years. My wife and I were had just bought a new house and we needed a truck. I got my wife to go with me to the dealership. We, meaning my wife with restrictions on what we were going to buy, didn't reach high enough. We settled on a red 1987 GMC Jimmy (it didn't even have four wheel drive) because my wife said, "We can put things in the back." That didn't work out for us for too long. In June 1996 I bought a 1986 Fiero GT that had only 37,000 miles on it. It was sharp. Had the extended sail panels on it that really validated the Fiero's design. It was black over silver with the honeycomb wheels. The sound system had some kind of bass amplifier that was activated by a sliding switch overhead toward the rear view mirror. As I mentioned earlier, the GMC Jimmy didn't last too long with us. My father had just retired from his job with US Steel and he was taking his masonry contractor business full-time. _Now_ (August '87) I really needed a pickup truck if I was going to help my father and brothers. My wife sadly said goodbye to the 1987 GMC Jimmy and I got am '88 GMC Sierra K1500. Now I had what Dad's business needed and what would work around our new house for when we had to get large items. In the span of four months or so I had two brand new vehicles. It cost an extra $1000 to get out of the Jimmy but it was worth it. The new Sierra paid for itself, practically.
This was a Canadian marketing campaign. I suspect the Firebird was just dipped in the (somewhat) fresh waters of Lake Ontario, a few blocks from GM's Canadian HQ. They save all their salt for winter driving up here.
Actually the Trans Am could. If you had the TPI they had gobs of torque through the low to mid rpm band which is what there famous for. The tpi wasn't design for red line rpm HP band, just torque off the line and they could put you back in the seat.
I will always love Pontiac. I grew up with Pontiacs.. before I was born my dad bought a 1980 Pontiac Trans Am Turbo. I remember playing around in that thing, and going for rides in it when i was little... it still sits in our garage.. =) And when my parents got me my first car, it was a 02 Pontiac Grand Am...I love that thing too.Pontiac will live on... (Oh, and its not Obama's fault. He wasnt the one who drove America to this way... you can think George Bush... but GM is really the one to blame
Well, born in 1997 I grew up with Pontiac, and Pontiac is staying with me. I loved the Pontiac Commericals when I was a kid. They would always excite me to see their cars coming to the streets!
ahh, the days when sporty cars would be seen driving fast in their commercials, now it's all about their looks, MPG, and the electronic BS they can weigh them down with
Wow I never saw these before. Pretty cool shots there! They actually tried to make a cool commercial back then and it shows. Almost painful watching that Trans Am on the beach in the salt water. Can hardly believe they ramped a Fiero!
I'd like to see a follow-up commercial five years later with all of these people saying, "You want to see something really exciting?"...and then they pull back the plastic side-body cladding to show the rust holes from trapped dirt, condensation, salt, etc.
Cool commercials. When I seen the sunbird all I could think was Chevy cavalier and Oldsmobile Firenza. I think Buick was a Skyhawk and Cadillac had one too. Not sure what it was called but GM used that under almost every brand.
Every GM division at the time had a J-car except GMC. That includes Vauxhall (Cavalier), Opel (Ascona), Holden (Camira), Isuzu (Aska) and even Daewoo (Espero). Cadillac's version was called the Cimarron.
The Firebird on the beach sections look really really similar to Wasaga Beach in the spring/fall when the winds pick up. The background clearly has some sort of hill/mountain which really resembles the blue mountain area which is to the south west of Wasaga and would be in clear view.
They advertised the sunbird but not the 6000 STE I know the STE got a lot of attention but it needed more the STE and trans am should have been the 2 most advertised cars for Pontiac well maybe the grand am seeing that it was a new car then

Sucks man, I have a friend who has a 1986 Pontiac Firebird 350 with T-Tops, needs a bit of body work, and is working on it, this sept. I should be getting it for about 2,000. He got it for a truck, like, traded a truck for it.
I watched this commercial the other day and thought damn, I should buy a Firebird! Now I own a 1985 Firebird - advertising works for sure.

That phrase is just too awesome!
Yup the first thing you want to do when you your new trans am is take it for a cruise on the beach.
Yes, either the beach, or that alley in New York where all the man holes spew out steam, and the pavement is all wet and shiny all the time.
I still think those Firebirds are great looking cars. Fiero's no slouch either. Both excellent candidates for some tasteful mods, too.
Some of the vehicles were decent looking. But-overall-the 1980s were *not* a good decade for automotive quality; foreign or domestic.
3rd Gen Firebirds and Camaro’s were widely popular in the 80’s
You know that trans am rusted the fuck out as soon as they got done driving it in the the ocean hahaha
lmao
Why the fuck would anyone drive a Firebird in the fucking ocean anyways? Huh? Whoooooo....
Sad...but likely-true!
I was like "WHY??? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!?!" watching that. 🤦♂
