  • Sony has announced the Xperia PRO-I - the first mainstream phone to feature a 1 inch sensor. In fact, its the same sensor found in the RX100-IV. With native video capture up to 120 fps at 4k, and dual 2.0 and 4.0 aperture for photography and video, this just might be the most camera centric smartphone on the market today.

I've gotten a lot of comments about the sensor size. Before I used the phone I had a 1 on 1 briefing with a technical manager with Sony. I wasn't told anything about the lens only using 60% of the sensor. I wanted to pin this here as there was no intention on my part to be misleading. That being said - I still stand behind everything in this preview and the image files do look fabulous. When I do a full review I will address this.

Ted, will you expound in the next video the use case for this phone over traditional cameras at this price point? The additional (likely costly) selfie/vlog rig is even less obvious over a camera with a flippy screen. Thank you.

Well, all you said about low light performance and bokeh is lie. Because even iPhone 13 Pro camera has a better bokeh and low light performance simply because its lens gather more light. I'm just curious (if you understand something in photography) how could you explain this silly sensor transformation from 20 Mp in Sony RX100 to 12 Mp in Xperia PRO-I? And didn't you see that huge difference in lenses between RX100 and Pro-I? How in the world small lens of Xperia could cover whole 1" sensor?

Just a heads up, this camera can be better than the pixel 6/iphone 13. You have to treat it like an actual camera though, otherwise the computational photography from the other phone makers wipes the floor with this phone. Sony is clearly tricking us by calling the sensor "type 1", but in their marketing material they mention the word inch not even once, except for their display size. The Phone has 12 MP and each pixel is 2.4qm. A Sony RX100 or ZV1 has 20 MP while the pixels are the same size. Doesn't it sound kinda fishy? For comparison, phones like the Samsung S21 Ultra have 12 MP in its pixel-binned mode, while a binned pixel is 2.4qm big. That device's sensor size is about 1/1.3 inch. So the Sony Xperia Pro-i's sensor should be also about the same size.

I think people who are complaining about the price miss the point of this. I'm not saying it's cheap by any means, but this is an all in one solution for mobile creators. You have a very capable camera from both a hardware and software perspective. Your able to edit those photos and videos on the same device and then share them by whatever platform you are using anywhere in the world long as you have a Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
Yes you can buy that little Sony vlogging camera or something and another phone. How do you move that content effectively to the phone? Or do you wait to get home and put the footage on a computer now you're well over that 1800 mark when you factor that in. This isn't a device for everyone and that's fine. I hope we continue to see improvements in this space that will trickle down to the more mainstream lines later on

The big story is of course the 1"-type stacked CMOS sensor from the RX100 VII. However, in order to keep the phone small, Sony has designed a lens that can't project an image circle large enough to cover the entire area of the 1" sensor. That's why, instead of 20MP images, as you'd get from the RX100 VII camera, you get 12MP images. But this has a broader implication: the combination of a slower F2 lens (than many of its smartphone peers) and a sensor that's not quite as big as a 1"-type sensor means the image quality might not meet the initial expectations you might have when you think 'smartphone with RX100 sensor'. In fact, if you consider just the area used for 12MP stills, it has roughly a 12mm diagonal and 70mm2 sensor surface area: closer to the specs of a 1/1.31" sensor (such as the one in the Google Pixel 6).

This phone for vloggers and the previous pro was meant as an accessory for other Alpha cameras as a camera monitor and 5G modem. If you'd like more affordable phone with same features, check Xperia 1 III or 5 III, these cost like your common flagship phone but it's true that they don't have an 1 inch sensor. I have no issues with Sony making two updates to the hardware since then, but I sincerely hope they plan to port that new camera app to the older phones, because there is no good reason those shouldn't have had a better base app. The single most frustrating thing for me was not cinema pro, but that the shutter button launcher couldn't launch it. So I was stuck with the crappy base camera app and zero ability to take advantage of the advance camera features for video with out taking a significantly longer time getting into the pro app. To summarize again one had crappy video in an instant or a great video in under a minute. I want that new app, but refuse to spend $1800 on a new phone when my existing phone still functions fantastically outside of what I spent the extra money on it for.

While I'm happy for anyone who gets any phone at any time that fits their needs/desires the point of my post was that the software that easily should run on any of the older Xperia 1 models, even the first one, has not been made available to these older Xperia models. The fact Sony has not released a software update to add this software is a huge negative for them. Why? Because people bought this top of the line phone with the hardware it has knowing the software could be updated, but when a company fails to upgrade the software that represents the core marketing point of the whole phone, it disrespects their users. Thus I will not buy or upgrade my existing phone to any future Sony phone if this kind of issue doesn't get satisfactorily resolved.

Wouldn’t compare it with an rx100 vii but a ZV1 which can be bought for 600-700 bucks and it still doesn’t have the one inch sensor at just one focal length, but across the entire range.
Add to that, that the 1 inch sensor is cropped to around 1/1.3 inch (60% of the area of an one inch) and the lack of space for a decent optic and it just stops making any sense at all.

LG were the only ones apart from Sony who were doing things differently, it's shame they stopped. They made a big mistake that Sony didn't tho and that is consistency. Ever since Sony rebooted their lineup, they had lazer focused vision of what their phones are supposed to be and they stuck with it and kept improving on it no matter how much other people criticised them for not being accessible for the masses. LG sadly were constantly trying new and trully interesting ideas but they never stuck with anything and always abandoned the tech they put into their phones. It was especially a pitty with their modular phones, that could have been a revolution if it got improved and established.
