How Mercedes exposes Porsche's F1 attitude problem

  • Porsche was looking all set to return to Formula 1 after a 30-year absence. Then suddenly talks with Red Bull broke down, the deal was off and everything went dark. Porsche maybe isn’t coming back after all, and Red Bull is going it alone - or maybe partnering up with Honda again. Who knows for sure at this stage?
    What we do know is that F1 management, led by former Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali, is VERY keen on more manufacturers coming onto the grid in time for the new hybrid engine rules that come into force for 2026.
    But maybe Porsche needs to look across to its German rival Mercedes for a few pointers on how to make sure corporate culture doesn't interfere with on-track success in F1.

    Williams have to take a gamble with Porsche in my eyes. What do they have to lose? Worst case scenario is that they end up at the back of the grid as they already are but the best case scenario is that Porsche inject a lot of cash into the team, assist in running the team more efficiently and as a result get that iconic name back into contention.

      Exactly this.
      Williams has a real governance and leadership problem. Claire Williams flushed her father's legacy down the toilet, and now a bunch of randomers with money are taking turns having a whack at it and are failing miserably. Get a real motorsports brand in with knowledge of the industry and see what happens.

      @@413TomaccoRoad Williams always have the highest top speeds among the Mercedes powered cars. What are you on about? The problem with Williams is that they don’t have any aerodynamicists worth a damn anymore. They literally just build point and squirt F1 cars.

      @@Taylorjay99 Same with the teams that Ferrari supplies. Now Haas and for 1 more year, Alfa. Haas should have partnered with Porsche, GM, Ford, or Toyota for engines. They didn't come in with a let's kick some butt attitude.

    If Williams want to get back up the front, they need to take a chance with Porsche. Sticking with Mercedes is them just settling for being a back marker. And, by getting involved with Porsche, Dorilton Capital will get a cash injection too.

      @@harry4454 literally this, Mercedes are required to provide the same Engine and associated parts to their customers teams does being a factory team help sure with chassis integration but there’s more to getting a car being fast than that
      The issues at Williams goes way beyond being a customer team

      They were sold to Longbow who are tied to Tetra Pak the sponsors of Marcus Ericsson. Sauber was sold to them when Kaltenborn was the teamboss to save the team.

      I do too. But it can be nice eliminating the engine variable when comparing midfield aero concepts as well

      I'd actually like them all to have exactly the same engine, tho there is no chance of that happening.
      Maybe all of them get engines from Honda or Porsche only. That way, Honda can stay in F1 and we can get a more normalized field of competitors...

      Maybe if they bump up the production quality to F1 levels. What we need is Formula Race As 1 competition where the cars are as fast as F1 but homologated.

      @@gupiwa sure you can make something similar but the cars are never going to be as fast due to something called innovation. Innovation can never happen in a spec series and that is why F1 will always be unmatched.

    Williams have GOT to snap this up. Dorilton's probably going to like the idea of some joint investment and this brand new era of Williams with a trusted mark could be a big commercial and financial lifeline for a team which is now, once again, in a state of flux.

    If the gamble by Liberty Media to get more into the American market pays (and so far it seems to be working), then I'd not be surprised if Andretti-GM and Ford finally get in the fun.

    I'm so excited that many manufacturers to returned in f1 because remember couple of decades ago there a lot of manufacturers failed miserably and some of them very successful

      I'm a Mercedes fan but I'd be over the moon to to see big manufacturers banned from F1. The barrier to entry means we will never see another Bruce McLaren / Frank Williams / Colin Chapman startup made up of people who have racing in their blood.
      Billionaire manufacturers with junior teams / sister teams / customer teams have ruined the sport.

    I'm still a bit disappointed that Porsche isn't joining with an all new factory team. Considering Porsche is one of the most successful brands across all of motorsports it definitely would have been an exciting entry. Especially because Porsches know-how across different sectors is quite helpful in such a competitive environment, not to mention that their name and legacy dwarves everything else except Ferrari.
    If they just supply engines it's fine as well, just not all that exciting. I'm still hoping for Andretti-Cadillac to become a new team on the grid though.

      The fact is that Porsche don't need F1 for their marketing. If they dont make it quickly they will jump of and leave a bleeding team or no team ta all. Cause again, they dont really need it to prove they are the best. it has more probability of hurting their reputation. So I think they are not a good option for F1.

      Still a big risk for Porsche. Look at Toyota’s F1 experience. Dominant in almost every motorsports arena they’ve entered and, even with arguably the biggest budget, they were a total failure. There’s more risk than reward for Porsche to try to do everything from a standing start with no real F1 experience.

So you’re saying that Porsche is scared to…… try? If they’re not willing to take the risk of entering F1, they will never have the same brand prestige as Mercedes. Because they literally haven’t accomplished anything at the most important and highest level of racing… F1

      Even if or when Andretti is allowed to join F1 it will have a freaking Renault engine in his new F1 cars for the foreseeable future. Thats disappointing 😞

      EDIT: To be more accurate, Longbow's Swedish owner, Finn Rausing, later created a sister company Islero Investments and transferred all Sauber assets from Longbow to Islero. So, Sauber is still Swiss-based and still Swedish-owned by the same Swedish businessman, just under a new company name.
      It's a reference to Sauber's current owners, Longbow Capital which does have a Switzerland office, but are bankrolled by Swedish industrialists.

      They pretty much are. New leadership saw the title in 21 and said wtf are we doing? So they r staying supporting RbPwtr.     If Andretti gets on board would be awesome to have Penske jump on the train too, and that would make Porsche's issue easier (the two cooperate in WEC after all). With this said, it seems difficult enough to have Andretti on, and Penske may be unwilling to attempt the jump

    The Porsche Red Bull fallout showed Porsche thought too highly of itself, Red Bull is quite self sustaining as it is and Porsche is bringing nothing to the table but its name and boardroom politics

      @@aaronwestley3239 Yes, it wouldn't. F1 is so far ahead of LMP1. And Porsche obviously doesn't have the facilities or infrastructure to work on an engine program. Red Bull on the other hand are prepared to go it alone with RBPT and have the facilities and well as the cash. Not to mention the Honda IP they brought in after they left in 2021. Porsche is useless.

      They said swedish 'owned' not 'based' I don't know who owns Sauber at the Moment, but I guess it is possible that some swedish folks own the majority stake there.
      Considering motorsport is banned in swizerland since 1955 I'm not sure if some swiss dudes would invest the money.

    they only want full fledged works operations that are willing to pay 3-4x the agreed dilution fee of 200m. I think with the spending cap its much easier for the teams to join because they dont have to spend 500m a year like ferarri, mercedes and red bull used to spend. It would have been really cool to see and audi/porsche f1 team.

    I don't understand why Porsche would want that much direct control over a racing team in the first place... Put your name on the car and give the team the resources to win.
    The success is definitely not guaranteed but it never is in F1 and an independent team is more likely to be successful than a team that needs to be micro managed by a board.

      It's Porsche we are talking about. Probably the least likely manufacturer to ever put a logo on a team and let them run on their own . If the sucess isn't guaranteed or atleast very likely then they simply don't want it . They want direct control over a racing team because they are themselves the most succesful manufacturer in all of motorsport and they haven't achieved that by just looking from the side and not getting directly involved .

      Williams get paid by just being in the sport cuz they're a historic team, that with the sponsors they have is why they're able to stay

      In the video they said Williams didn’t want to give up a lot of control, well they’ve done sold all for over a decade in the sport and are only here because of the name - they need to not be a dinosaur and grow with the times. Porsche could be that, in my view

    Hmm i wonder what would help prospective engine manufacturers enter F1? Here's a breakthrough of an idea maybe allow more than 10 teams and the existing teams can shush abt "what extra they bring" just a thought

    Hmmm....it seems difficult to say that Porsche shouldn't want to have any say so in the racing business, they are an established racing company as Mercedes was when it got involved as a factory team! But, I don't think it matters if they join F1 or not since Audi is in. I would wish that if a new team is to join, that they will be competitive within 3-5 years at the most.

    It is hard to compare Mercedes and Porsche in this respect. At Porsche, the Porsche and Piech "Owner" families make such decisions and would certainly have a hands-on approach. Toto Wolff is a hired specialist and as far as I know, the Mercedes board does not have powerful Owners with large numbers of shares who are "meddling" in their F1 business. Having said that - I would love to see Porsche in F1, but with the current discussion about Andretti, am not sure it is the right time from an F1 perspective.

      Also Toto Wolff owns a third of the team, alongside INEOS and Daimler AG. Even if they wanted, the Mercedes board cannot meddle into the F1 business unless they also have INEOS support.

    Porsche actually has a fully functioning F1 power unit on a shelf somewhere. They built it in 2017 for a possible transition to F1 after the LMP1-project drew to a close, so there is a possibility of taking that engine and developing it to 2022 standards.
    With the engine freeze in place there wouldn't be too much to worry about in terms of falling behind the more established brands, but then again developing a power unit for a formula that's ending in 2026 might be too much of a risk.

      That is correct. But, they wouldn’t be using it right away. They would have to develop that engine to adhere the 2026 engine regulations. In such case the differences are eFuel, less fuel flow, and greater ERS-K, to compensate for the loss of combustion power, the ERS-H & Variable trumpets. That would be the most likely scenario and not using rebadged Audi engines like many thing they would.

    Logical thing to do would be Porsche takes a large stake in Williams and Andretti takes AT, since Porsche kindly declined the offer by RB to do so. That is the true reason why talks ended. It was always Marko's plan to sell them AT.

      @@ramarkble101 about AT being offered by Marko? That's kind of a public secret already. Last time I heard it was on the race youtube channel. But Tommo, various credible sources within F1 etc. claim it. Mateschitz wanted AT to have a good future too so he was very much on board with the Porsche route for AT. Porsche already has a testengine running so I have no idea why this channel coaims they don't have a PU. They most definitely have a PU and it's not a rebadged Audi either.

      @@ramarkble101 Porsche built and tested an engine that would adhere to 2021 regulations back in 2017. Nothing has changed engine wise since then. They would only have to develop that engine to adhere the 2026 engine regulations. Which aren’t that much different.       @@LuisTrey Yep, Porsche has the ability, I recall when they entered American Le Mans with the RS Spyder alongside Penske and were immediately competitive. They won their class (LMP2) 3 years straight (06,07 and 08) even taking overall wins in some races over those seasons; I remember them taking 1 and 2 at 12 Hrs of Sebring in 2008, breaking Audi's 8 years dominance at the track (who were running LMP1 cars).

    Each team needs their own proprietary engine and drivetrain, without it the team will probably be a mid to back of the grid constant, specially these days.

    I hope Audi/Porsche/Honda either are all in, or at least 2 of them (since Audi is sorta "REALLY" in).
    The next step, 2030ish, is to have independents be able to form a team and race, long term. Bringing back the initial Williams and McLarens. Always having to rely on manufacturers or manufacturer partners isn't great, because it limits who can enter. Every downturn in the economy, you'll see teams wanting to pull out. The cost cap needs to get to $100M USD year before they'll allow another independent team, sadly.

    I feel like Porsche could get Penske to run a works team for them fairly easily. It seemed like the Redbull talks broke down because Redbull didn't want to sell half of the company. Penske already runs their new LMDH program, it would be a perfect fit

    I hate how F1 is looking for new teams but when one shows up they are resisting them but when others want to buy in, they couldn't be happier.

    I want to see a team come in as their own engine manufacturer. Sure it’s a bigger risk on them, but with the sport’s popularity rising, stocks are high so they shouldn’t just let *anyone* join right away.

    Williams have only recently changed hands from the Williams family to an unidentified American based cartel that I suspect includes some very big F1 names (that we won’t know about for a few years from now). This, I believe, is based on a long term vision to make that team great again at some point in the future. No way will they make a U-turn on that now, and give up control to Porsche (or anyone else)

    I think the Porsche ship has sailed at this point, I imagine if we get another new manufacturer on top of Audi and Cadillac (if they're allowed in) it'll be Honda or Hyundai.

    It only makes sense for Williams to get bought by Porsche and collaborate. Singer and Williams engineering have already worked in collaboration to build the engine for the Porsche 911 Singer DLS. Williams already have the facilities to build a Formula 1 engine and car. All Porsche would need to do is come in and work their magic.

    From the teams point of view, Williams has nothing to lose. With rumours of Dorilton wanting to recoup some of the money they’ve put into it, it seems like a golden opportunity. Worst case scenario, they end up staying where they already are at the back of the grid.

    Mercedes seems to have good model but don't doubt that Porsche will not have done their homework. They very rarely enter a works team in any racing category half hearted. Their frequent success in sportscar racing, especially in the top sports prototype categories, proves that and that's a category that's easy to fail in if you're not prepared.

    Porsche was founded in 1931. They have been around longer than F1. They know what they are doing. Porsche does not need F1 to impress anyone. Their sales in China surpasses Europe and the US, a country/ region not part of the “traditional” F1 racing scene. The Porsche marketing team can teach some lessons to any sales and marketing group in the world. Let’s all agree: F1 needs the Volkswagen Group as a technology/ engine provider to survive and to stay relevant. Not vice versa.

    In summary: you need big company money without the big company short-term (quarterly) thinking. I don't see Dorilton Capital staying in too much longer as their job/company mission is to maximize investment return for their shareholders and do not have intrinsic value of marketing like other companies to offset the balance sheet. Once they can find a buyer willing to pay more than the future value (i.e. future growth of F1), they're gone.

    History has thought as that big corporates are not built for F1. It seems for them a big investment of money on marketing, so when it fails, they leave. THey are not in it for racing. Andretti is a much better option and will probably stay around for much longer than the big manufacturers.

      @@ArranD1 They would have already manufactured engines for the other motorsport series they compete in. Hence why they’re relying so much on Cadillac to be their partner to possibly join Formula 1. Cadillac would supply the power unit and most likely build the chassis while Andretti does nothing but run the operations side of the team and splatter their logo everywhere they can.

    And that's a beautiful 24 grid here! Up to 9 engine manufacturer. But that seems extremely unlikely to happen

    I think Dorilton Capital should sell Williams to Porsche. It makes sense for both parties, and a Porsche Williams team would be very cool to see.
    That being said, I can see VW then going all corporate on Williams and destroying the team.

    Indy Car's main problem is that they are only the 3rd fastest road racing series behind F1 and DPI. 750hp is not enough. That Wheldon incident really shook them up.

      DPI is not on indycar level, it's about the same as lmp2. japanese superformula is second fastest series after f1, then indycar, roughly equal with former lmp1-h. DPI is 5% slower than indy.

      2- Le mans Hypercar (670hp)
      3- Indycar (650hp)
      4- Formula 2 (620hp)
      5- Dpi (600hp)
      6- LMP2 (560hp)
      7- Superformula (543hp)
      *Important to note that HP doesnt mean "fast", aerodinamics play a huge part also
