One the best demos Ive seen really explaining the basses and what they can do, playing different styles slap, walking bass, finger style helps you hear what the bass sounds like, just picked one up the trbx 305 same color for mainly practice and teaching but I had to take it on gig in a pinch, and I was impressed with it in the mix and sound, excellent bass for the money!
Having used a TRBX505 my opinion has changed, In the studio, I would say it holds up pretty well and has a wicked tone on finger style and slap. Despite the new preamp it has the classic Yamaha tone that all rockers and funk players would like, The mahogany makes it growl like a tiger.
@@savanaviolenta the wood doesn't affect the tone. Well... at least it doesn't affect the tone so you can hear it. It is almost no difference if you have a mahogany bass or whatever else
@@joopieknoopie8324 You see sound and shapes in musical notes if you have synesthesia. My daughter, who is an amazing Disney VR animation artist has it. Great demo and avoids a lot of the cliche a lot of manufacturers think they need to use. This video was honest and also informative, can't wait to try know out myself.
I was lucky to pick up a used 504 in near-new condition for around $350. Absolutely killer sound and playability. So much so, the day after I got it, I was using it at a gig. No big learning curve on the playing side. And the sound was ... well amazing. I could go from country to slap by simply using the on-board EQ. I would recommend this bass to players of all levels.
Oh fancy that. I just saw you open for Fan Halen last month. I thoroughly enjoyed your set. I saw one of these at Sam Ash yesterday, and fell in love instantly. I never thought I'd like a Yamaha bass but man these things can sing. Looks like this will be my first 5 string purchase.
I have this bass and to "really dial into the sound I want" 3:33 I have to use an external WTDI preamp and boost the mids range as the internal 2 Band EQ of the TRBX 375 isn't enough for a really professional performance. Good bass anyway.
Great playing as always Darrell and good overall review of the instruments! Two questions: is that black model (504 series) was made custom for you? Cause in official site they listed the same model but with a diffrent bridge (like 300 line) this one you play have a bridge similar to a Hipshot A model and the top finish looks diffrent also from site's one. Maybe it's from studio lights? If you have time please reply, thanks!
I have been debating between one of these, or a used jazz bass, but am wondering about one thing; could I use the 500 in passive mode, and just not use batteries? Honestly for me, having the extra tone options on the bass isn't a huge deal, so I was just curious and couldn't find much on the net between forums and such. I would appreciate any advice :)
+Hat Guy I picked up a 505 not too long ago. It's a really good bass for not much money. You can totally use the passive mode and never need a battery, but try it to see if you like it. The active tone is much better for recording, I've found.
+Hat Guy The Jazz bass has that signature fender sound which some people, including me, like so if you want that signature sound then go with the fender but i don't see how you wouldn't be able to get that sound if you do some tweaking, let me know what you choose afterwards :)
I ended up getting a Special Edition Jazz Bass in January. I like it a lot more honestly, in terms of the tone, it just makes 3 knobs so usable, and it has signature sound that works with almost anything. The 505 was really attractive to me because it had so many tone options, and the neck was smaller, but now that I have the Jazz Bass, I found that I can get any tone I need from just the three knobs. I thought a smaller neck would be easier to play, but now that I have the Jazz Bass I found that I really like the slightly bigger neck, and actually find it easier to play. I have a friend that plays a P-Bass, and actually prefer the feel in my left hand to the J-Bass. I know there are some people who feel the complete opposite way though, so if you're reading this and trying to decide what to get, you cant know until you try some out yourself.
loving the idea of the blade switch blade eq presets but I just can't help but see 'the 80s' in that shade of red :P Active/passive switch would be awesome when playing fusion and you need that low-output tone for walking. Loving the new ideas!
HI Darrell: I have a question regarding strings, what could be the advantage of a Bass guitar with 5 strings over a Bass guitar of 4 strings, I followed your advised and purchased a TRBX 304 and I was thinking about a TRBX205, pls let me know your thinking about this..... Paul
nice review, looking to replace my musicman stingray 5 for this Yamaha trbx 505 amazing versatile bass... I play many genres and I`m in need of exactly what this bass has to offer... thank you Yamaha!
Does anyone know if the 4-string bass shown in this video is the TRBX500 (I don't quite know if such a model actually exists) or the TRBX 504 in translucent black?
The most underrated bass out there, the build quality is amazing. plays much better than anything in its price range. mine plays better than my fender P bass in my opinion.
So the cheaper ones are basically face lifted RBX 37* series? Colors, pickup casings and even price are rather smiliar. The new shape is sweet anyway. Shame about losing the RBX bridge - it' was super nice for quick string changes and looked way cooler than typical Fender one here.
Hey Darrell! I was just wondering if it is the rs210 or 212 you have on your 410? i am going to buy one of those (210 or 212) to have on my own 410 (also tc). Any advice?
I own a Yamaha BBG5s, YamahaTRB6MKII bolt on Neck and Yamaha TRB6PII throughneck with the Piezo bridge. Yamaha has cut the customers loose who are looking for boutique quality modern sounding instruments.
Wait, what is the finish on that TRBX504? I cannot see any finish good looking like that in North America ? Is it a prototype or it's coming from japan ???
Is this one manufactured in China too ? if i take a yamaha motorcycle, a yamaha phone and a yamaha jet boat, will i get a price on a yamaha bass ? (Will it be some yamaha kitchen soon ? looking for one actally)
Hey guys, I was thinking of getting the 5 series over the 3 series trbx, but the price difference is roughly $250 between the two. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me into the different performance in each and where the money goes between the two as I am not sure I can justify such a price difference for some little electronic differences.
Hi Mr. Craig: I'm taking Bass lesson at this moment, I am in the process of purchase a Bass! I was thinking about theYamaha TRBX 304, but I would like to know your opinion, remember I am an apprentice in this instrument! I will wait for your reply! Regards, Paul
I'm a bassist and I would recommend a fender squire. You can buy one at most music shops. They're affordable and great for all genres of music. And get a fretted one to start off with. Fret-less is for more the more experienced. Hope it helped you!
Don't hesitate to buy a TRBX 304...Nothing comes close to it in it's price class. I am a semi-pro player and I bought one due to it's light weight. I haven't touched my other basses in months. The TRBX 304 covers all the tones I need. There are cheaper basses out there, but for the price and performance this wins hands down. Plus side it looks killer, boutique almost!
Paul Canting Rodríguez As a beginner, I think you will find the pre-set eq's to be very helpful. Being "old-school" myself, I prefer the passive option offered by the 500-series. Having been playing for ~30 years, I don't think you can go wrong picking up either as your first instrument.
Craig, I disagree with you, I own a Yamaha TRB6Pii which is not a artist backed model but was the top of the range before it was discontinued. I also own the Yamaha TRBB6IIMK which was a not an artist backed model but compares favourably with the Yamaha JP1 at that time. I also own a Yamaha BBG5s. The issue with long time users of Yamaha basses is that the choice of instruments have narrowed. The company seems focused on producing either signature basses or budget priced basses.

I don't really understand your point. Models come and go as with any other company, and as Yamaha is a business they of course make and keep the instruments the sell the best otherwise they have no business.
Electric Bass I don,t care what company makes them most electric basses sound the same today and most of your sound is your amp so keep buying new basses and keeping the companies rich you, can take a p- bass or a jazz bass and make any vintage or modern sound with just those two bass guitars alone.

Yamaha still has their signature basses and those have always served as their boutique basses, nothing has changed with that. :)
Los instrumentos Yamaha son excelentes, hasta los de gama media baja superan en calidad, sonido y terminación a instrumentos de mayor valor.
Great review, great playin', supercool Sounds. Love this basses!
Hi, these were the initial hand made prototypes, the production basses sound and play exactly the same. All the same materials used.
This cat could make a shoebox and rubberbands sound sick.
Does the 304 have battery-powered active electronics onboard? It does sound this way, but I can't confirm it in any spec sheet on the net...
