  • update- the belt was defective and returned fully refunded - probably could work if strap adjustable but too restrictive to be held into one posture for hours, like when i walk and practice
    original text:
Help wanted from my viewers, many of whom are DIY types and better with knots and belt adjustments than me.
I've been searching for a way to not sure the neck while fiddling, and hoped the Wickelbuckel might allow me to play comfortably without needing to push down on a chin rest. However, I'm not sure this strap is fully extended? Or is it just me?
I stopped using a Viostrap for about 9 months as I've tried to change my positioning more often while playing. A good chin/shoulder rest combo seemed like the answer, but I then went and hurt my neck again, so went back to the drawing board looking for help. Unfortunately the Wickelbuckel did not offer much details on its website, no tutorial. Maybe this video will help others consider whether this will be helpful for them, for 70$ ++
For those seeking to fiddle and buckdance/clog dance at the same time, maybe it could help.

After watching your video, I re-purposed my Viostrap. I used the bead thing under my chin rest. Then I adjusted the strap length for my belt. I get it ready and reach my fiddle up over my back and then I can play without using my chin.
I think the difference between a fiddle and a violin is the rattlesnake rattle in the body.
I played the fiddle today for over a hour and it was much better than when I have the Viostrap around my neck.
I did not know that you were a buck dancer and danced to the fastest Bluegrass song. That is impressive.

Your depiction of that contraption is hilarious! Thanks for posting.
I use a diy variant of Ithaca Strings’ Fiddle Strap. Probably weighs less than two ounces. $20 and a week for shipping if you buy, under $4 and an hour if diy. I began using it with a shoulder rest, but am now using it without one.

    hi miss moonshine
i play 20month fiddle now and began with the classical chinholding posiion, which i found terrible, caused me pain like you in my neck and in my arms, holding the fiddle that high ,not a very naturally position and dangerous for ones left ear ,can cause tinnitus. then i saw nathan paine & jon bekoff, thanks to you ! I tried like them with the fiddle on ones lap and crossed legs, sitting. I do like them now and even sit relaxed back on my sofa and put pillows on both sides of me and can play for a few hours without pain in the neck and arms. I'm almost 70 and jon & nates way of holding the fiddle is the only way that works for me. Sometimes i play even more relaxed leaning back with eyes closed and head backwards on the backside of the sofa. Maybe it is not a good position to play fast, but that doesnt interest me at all, i dont like nervous running the scales fiddle. maybe you could try that too. I like to see you happy and not struggling like this. God bless you and your nice channel greeting peter from across the ocean/The Netherlands

@@MissMoonshineDance want to add to what i commented that when I sit back ,legs over each other then I held my fiddle against my breast and my lefthand lies on my knee holding the fiddleneck like jon
but when i dont cross my legs my fiddle lies on my lap and i sit very much bend over forwards, sometimes i put a thin pillow on my lap where the fiddle rests on. I play sometimes for a few hours and have to change positions
I know that i never ever will use the chinposition ,i even removed the chinrests, which to me makes the fiddles that i have more beautifull. Oh and I wont have nothing to do with shoulderrests. But for you it would a big step to give up the chinposition after 10years. But continueing like you do now can end your fiddle playing when your neck is too long overcharged(is that the word?) like rsi in ones arms ,wrists, hands. Hope you find the right solution for you !
      succes.

@@WessPeter I only did the chin position for the last year. The first nine years of flying was right on the chest and it was more comfortable for my neck. I’m going back to that but I can’t look down. I’m going to use a ukulele strong like a violin for practicing my patterns while walking. Today I was able to fiddle with a three-quarter size violin, my first time I could fiddle in four months. Very exciting. I may buy a three-quarter size for practice. So much easier to get my hands around and play in first position without reaching. Who knows maybe I’ll even stay with the three-quarter size, because I’m like you I don’t really wanna perform I just like making the music for myself

There is a guitarist named Yamandu Costa from Brazil. He’s most definitely one of the greatest that has ever lived. He breaks every standard rule imaginable concerning how the instrument is “supposed” to be held and played. He has come to terms with his personal ergonomics and is unimaginably proficient in any position he finds himself. The answers are out there somewhere to be found. They seem to be within.

Just a thought, how about an attachment to the violin resting on your forearm for support, possibly strapped to your forearm. No neck strap/attachment at all.

I've got a draw full of shoulder rest thingies that I thought I needed when I first started learning fiddle (two years ago - still a baby). I hated them all. My only need is to have my chin rest (a wittner) somewhat centered over the tail piece. That's where my chin wants to be. That's it. Just me and the fiddle. Those contraptions you got are horrifying. Burn them. Find your comfort zone and play a nice slow gypsy dirge over the bonfire. At night. Film it. I look forward to seeing it.

I use a viostrap and it has allowed me to continue to enjoy playing the violin. Ergonomic instructors want us to keep our necks in a neutral position but all of the violin teachers I’ve seen on UA-cam want our heads always to the left. My guess is that a violin teacher would never consider teaching where the neck and jaw were not involved.

I see at 00:18 that it's a mis-sewn strap. The top end of the section hanging down is sewn onto the strap, instead of sewn as a loop around the post in the slider. It can't work. Let Duncan know. I'm sure you can get a working strap from him. I saw posts recently about all his gear getting lost by airline (went to Heathrow when he and his partner were flying into Paris), complicating his upcoming gigs. So might be a few hours or days before you hear back.

The stream just stopped working. I’ll try to help without another look.
One thing you could do is find a video showing how the sling on an M1 Garand rifle is adjusted. It could illustrate the problem with that strap.
In lieu of that, you’ll have to disassemble that looped portion of the strap by pulling the stitches or cutting it.
Then attach one loose end of the strap to the center of the sliding buckle by making a little loop and sewing it on permanently.
You can then take the other end of the strap and feed it up through one end of the sliding buckle, over the center and down through the other side. This will give you an adjustable loop.
You will have to take it apart and put it back together properly. The bottom line is that it was improperly assembled and defective. That’s what I’m seeing from here. It’s locked in at half it’s potential length with zero adjustment.
This is what I do for my neck trouble. I don’t recommend it, but it works for me .I made my own neck traction harness by copying one that a chiropractor used on me years ago.
It’s a long strap that goes under my chin like a helmet’s chin strap with another strap that goes around the back of my head that is sewn ,at an empirically determined angle in relation to the chin strap.
I pad the whole affair with old socks and attache it to a beam supporting my cabin loft landing , that’s accessible from the stairs leading to the loft. I get in the thing and bend my knees till I get a firm but comfortable stretch. I could probably use my chining bar to hang it , but I’ve never thought of it until writing this. (use a boxer’s mouthpiece or a rolled up wash cloth to protect your teeth as considerable force may be applied to them.)
As I said, I’m not recommending that you attempt such foolhardy therapy, but it does work for me. And since you seem to have a bunch of scrap strap, I thought I would mention it. 💪😁

There’s is a girl, Penka Jane Culevski, in a duo called Dear Crow that’s has some type of simple strap that she does have to hold the violin. Looks like a way simpler way than that contraption you’re trying to figure out. I’ll try to send a link to a video she’s using in on

      ua-cam.com/video/ltc7t9o9C64/v-deo.html
I asked her what it was in the reply section of the above link. She says it’s a leather strap she puts under her arm & across the back of her neck then around the bottom of the violin. If you look at the reply she sent me she briefly explains it.

The sliding buckle is improperly attached. It should form an adjustment loop with the ability to lengthen or shorten the un looped portion of the strap. What I’m seeing is a length that is half of it’s intended length.

It’s either a refund or a bunch of scrap strap. You may even have to lay off playing for a while. I know that’s hard. I’m having serious trouble with my left thumb. I skewered to the bone with an extremely sharp pointed tool some weeks ago. I’m making a soft removable cast out of cotton and painter’s tape to be able to play my guitar. Hurts like hell. What a pickle. It will be three months before I know where I stand as far as playing guitar goes.
