Don’t forget that Bob Clark, probably best known today for directing A Christmas Story, had previously been well-known for directing Black Christmas, one of the first true slasher movies.
Love Coraline, I’m still really creeped out by Monster House. Maybe it’s a combination of the motion capture, the Old Man who lives in the House, and the backstory of why the House became sentient that disturbed me. I’m an adult now, and I’ve watched several scarier horror movies, but I still can’t bring myself to revisit Monster House.
Hunt the back story was what scared me most about it as a kid. I revisited it a couple years ago, and it wasnt as bad as I remembered. Still a fun movie, you should try to watch it again.
I think those jokes are definitely appropriate for the audience this movie is aimed at and those light moments help the movie from becoming too much for kids to handle. Although my kids would still be creeped out.
i'm not even a kid (a teenager instead, almost 18 actually) but from the cemetery scene onwards i couldn't stop shaking from anxiety, and during the end parts i bursted into tears, the movie at the point was too much for me to handle,, i was thinking of asking my parent if we could leave but i could hardly speak from my anxiety :(
I don't know what the hell they were thinking with Gremlins and The Witches, but they were really cool for younger me to be able to see a movie like this, even though it was clearly not suitable for children my age.
I appreciate a film made for families and younger audiences that isn't afraid to be 'scary'. Parent's who complain about it being "too scary" should take the time to know their kids better, because no one knows more about what a kid can and can't handle than their parents/guardians. If your kid scares easily, then look into the movies they want to see before taking them to make sure it's a movie they can handle--I mean, there is a thing called Google that can help you out. PG means Parental Guidance, not "automatically perfect for ALL kids". Not the movie studio's fault it was too scary for them, don't ruin it for the kids that don't mind and enjoy scary movies. As a kid, I LOVED movies like this that were creepy and scary and hated the ones that talked down to me and toned down the scares. Besides, it's healthy and fun to be scared when you KNOW it's safe, like in a movie.
Agreed about parents knowing what their kids can handle -- they should at least! When we saw it for our review, I left feeling like my kids would be too scared by it, but knowing that there are other kids in the world who would love it. It's a good movie and definitely worth a watch for those who don't scare easily -- which isn't me! :)
I took my daughter to see this over the weekend and we loved it. We just finished reading the book that it was based on and it was fairly close. I didn't even know Roth was directing this until we were sitting in the theater and his name popped up on the credits. We really need more films like this. It reminded me of Gremlins and Return to Oz...or maybe Something Wicked This Way Comes.
I heard Eli Roth was inspired to make this film because Spielberg told him "kids like to be creeped out". Idk if that's true but it looks like this film does have that element. Anyway, good review :)
Well That explains how the Indiana Jones films scared the shit out of me...Truffaut told spielberg in the close encounter set That he should make kids movies because he was like a kid
I don't want to be "Stuckmanized" it sounds painful and frankly, "Unsanitary" can I still subscribe and watch your reviews without the "Stuckmanization?" is there like some kind of "Opt-out" for the "Stuckmanizing?" if so can you direct me to the Opt-Out page?
It's not that bad getting "Stuckmanized". Just make sure Chris whispers in your ear while he "stuckmanizes" you......oh yeah, and make sure he uses plenty of lube.
When I was 10, home alone...I watched *A Clockwork Orange* at 3AM. When the sun came-up I felt like I had been to another world. Addicted to film ever since.
He really is, the relaxing tone he speaks in is great too. it really feels like you're sitting at a table with a friend and getting a genuine review from him, it's not overly hyped up like a lot of other reviews just calm and straight to the point.
Yeah, the poop jokes felt off, even compared with the rest of the script. Something tells me the Studio wanted to balance out some of the scarier stuff so they were just like, "What do kids like? I know! Poop! Hey, Kripke, write a bunch of poop jokes!!! All the poop jokes! We gotta distract the kids from all that demonic possession stuff you're talkin' about!"
The only poop joke that worked was when Lewis started cringing and Johnathan said "now it looks like your pooping" But using it as a running gag with the Lion was just plain lazy there are still plenty of ways to make kids laugh other than gross out humor. I think the running gag should've been the lion just scraping his claws on the curtains or something cause that would've been alot high up in terms of comedy
I honestly loved this movie. This is the kind of movie kids now a days will remember from their childhood just how kids from my generation remember Hocus Pocus, Casper, and Beetle Juice. It's a magical movie, some what scary, with a magical house that kids will love, you aren't lying about kids being afraid of some parts I took my nieces and nephew and my nephew was gripping to my arm and I kept telling him it's ok.
What about Witches, Return to Oz, Never Ending Story, Labyrinth, Gremlins, Rescue from Midnight Castle, The Addams Family, The Nightmare Before Christmas? Those were creepy movies! I can't say that they make movies as those anymore, because they totally do.. Coraline, ParaNorman, Corpse Bride, or Owls of Ga'Hoole.
As an adult who cant deal with horror movies, I really appreciated this "dip your toes in" kind of movie. I went to see it specifically because it looked like it played that line. And alone. As an adult. And there were some creepy uncomfortable parts that didnt make me feel like a complete wimp. I would also have to agree that the humour really pulled me out of the experience. But it was a fun film. I have been enjoying Jack Black in his more calm roles.
I'm so glad to hear that the movie is good; the book was one of my favorites when I was growing up. John Bellairs was writing top notch horror stories for kids before Goosebumps & Are You Afraid of the Dark? even existed. I really hope that the success of this film means that we'll see more of his stories on the big screen; I've always wanted to watch the film version of The Curse of the Blue Figurine.
I rather liked the small cast and how it focuses more on character. Yes, when I saw it there was several young kids who did mention out loud after the movie and during a couple scenes to their parents that it was too scary.
I haven't seen it yet but from the sounds of it, its gonna be pretty scary for PG hopefully unlike goosebumps, goosebumps to me was very bland and not as good as the books.
Agreed that the small cast was a bonus. I thought the heart of the story was great. My kids were really looking forward to seeing it, but once we saw it for our review, we knew they would not like it. Too creepy! But that's just our kids. I'm sure there are some kids who love it.
Ghost in The shell Than why comment? As a matter a fact, why pay any attention at all to something you think has lost all of its significance? You’re angry. Be happy
I was pleasantly surprised by the adult edge this film has. it managed to blend both light-hearted and dark-hearted tones surprisingly well, in a very consistent way. The mystery was very intriguing, the performances were top notch and the creepiness factor of the film really convinced me that I would enjoy this film. I just love it when family films break boundaries. just like Coraline.
I'm glad you liked it. I've been seeing it in bits and pieces over the weekend, as I run a projection booth of a local theater on weekends. And what I saw really was grabbing at me. I was left very excited for what was on offer, just from the snippets I've seen. Now I want to see it pretty damn bad. Especially given that nothing else on offer in my theater has had my attention, and I've kinda been in a mood to go see a movie.
I paused this video at 3:38, bought my tickets, and went to see this. Just got back. I LOVED it. As soon as you made a positive comparison to "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" I was in. They should pay you.
This is a fantastic book, as well, which I read as a grade school kid in the 70s. We met the author, who lived a couple downs away from my town growing up (John Bellairs) and he really thought that kids understood the world much better than people gave them credit for. It's so interesting that it's taken over 40 years for someone to adapt it into a film.
I’m looking forward to seeing this. The next phase of Eli’s career could be ushering in a new wave of family horror films like the ones we had in the 80s with Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Monster Squad, etc.

The Exorcist was one movie that terrified me. So i got it on VHS, then I got it on DVD and now I own it on Blurry so I could watch and understand it and now it's just one of my all time faves. The bit where the bad guy gets covered in sewage in Robocop freaked me out too. I would actively be scared of that scene coming up whenever I watched it. And the bit where the T1000 stabs the dude through the milk carton; the slow pan reveal of that kill would chill me every time. Monster Squad, Lost boys... I could go on. So looking forward to seeing this film. Thanks for the great review.
Goddamn. I have no time in the world. I’m so busy that I can’t even live. Yet my stupid, useless, little to no will powered mind decides to watch this lovely video
Oh yeah Chris, this was a great movie and would love to see a sequel or series with Vaccaro, Jack Black and Thompson; they all had great chemistry. As I said in my review; I felt it was cross between Harry Potter and Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events! 😁🤙
lol, I actually had a "wait, what?" moment during the transformation scene. I was asking myself how he got away with it and kept his PG rating. There was only one family with kids in my theater and as soon as that scene happened they picked up and left.
i’m planning to see with movie with a friend on friday! she’s been talking about wanting to see it for a while and i’m actually kind of a jack black fan, so i’m looking pretty forward to it, especially with this nice review.
TheGreatOnez In my opinion if you want to see venom you should see it if you want to. Who knows maybe it'll be a great film. We'll find out in about two weeks or so.
If you're expecting a critic to align with your taste on every movie, you're viewing it wrong. I say go watch the film first and then compare your views with Chris'
Happy anniversary and we hope you get better soon! I'm going to (hopefully) see this movie this weekend, so I'm super excited that you gave it a good review! :DD
Xialite Really?? I thought he did really well! Even though the crying was over the top, it still felt like he was deeply hurt and had emotion behind it. I’ve seen worse, I think the bully was super cringey myself but I loved the actor for Lewis!
your description near the beginning reminded me of the old Wizard of OZ movie where the walls have faces and are afraid of eggs, that movie until today 25 or so years later, is the one I consider the scariest movie I've seen
I’ve always wanted to see Eli Roth make a good film. All his past films were just gory grindhouse films with no plot. I’m glad that he’s gone in another direction. I don’t mean to shit on his movies but I wanted to see his true talent and what he can really bring to the big screen. This movie looks like a representation of that. I’m gonna check it out. When watching the trailer and looking at the poster, Eli Roth was the last name I’d expect to see as the film director haha. But again, looking forward to seeing it. Awesome review Chris.
The head throwing fire demons in Labyrinth always seriously creeped me out as a kid. Gave me nightmares even. LOVED that movie though. Still do to this day.
He didn't even mention that Eric Kripke, Supernatural creator wrote this movie. Wow. You've mentioned screenwriters before. The hell, Chris. Dropping the ball.
I'm sorry you're feeling sick that sucks. YOU ARE THE ONLY MOVIE REVIEWER I WATCH. I DONT KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO WITHOUT YOU. YOU ARE SO ACCURATE. I LOVE YOU 😍❤🤩
The movies that stuck with me the most as a kid were the ones that scared me. The Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story, The Secret of Nimh, and The Land Before Time to name a few. I didn't see any of these films again until I was an adult, and I remembered nearly every frame of each.
Great video and I know a while back you said you wanted to make a theatre for people who don’t want to be disturbed and seriously we need one. I saw the nun a while back (not a good movie) but the experience was terrible. We need Stuckmann theatres across the US.
I will never forget the morning of September 11th, 2001. I was driving into New York City to work in the morning and I turned on the radio. The horror and fear that I felt as I flipped from station to station only to hear more and more details about the first plane hitting the Twin Tower. I was crying and probably shouldn't have been driving, but I continued anyway. I was so shocked by the news I was hearing that I completely forgot that my wife was working at the Twin Tower. As soon as I remembered, I called her on my big cellular phone to see if she was alright. Thank goodness she answered and told me that she was safe in the other Twin Tower. I remember specifically saying, "Baby, I don't think I'll be able to work today. I don't feel good about any of this. Do you think you can work overtime today to make up the lost pay?" We were running low on money at this time, but she understood and told me to go home, get some rest, and that she would see me at the end of her work shift. I said, "I love you," and instead of saying, "I love you, too," like a decent wife would say to her loving, upset husband, she hangs up the phone on me as I'm about to turn around and drive back home. After this, I changed the radio station one more time to see if there was anything else on. Maybe I just wanted to get away from the depressing, awful news. Or maybe I wanted to see what other stations/people had to say. The next station that I set the radio to was playing this song. I still remember the first line I heard. "You're a teaser, you turn 'em on. Leave 'em burning and then you're gone." I cried even more than I did while hearing the news of the plane crash. Ever since then, this song has always had a special place in my heart and I will never forget the feeling I experienced on that day. My wife must have been so upset with me that she decided to leave me without even saying goodbye. To this day, I still speculate about where she ran off to on that Tuesday morning after getting so mad at me for asking her to work a little overtime to make more money. It's not like I was asking her to jump out of a building or anything! Anyway, this song just reminds of my wife -- sorry, my EX-wife -- and the last conversation I ever had with her before she angrily ran away from me because I was showing my true emotions to her. This is the greatest song of all time. P.S. If you're reading this Heather, please know that I still love you and haven't given up hope that you will return to me after our "misunderstanding" (even though it was entirely your fault for hanging up on me and leaving me just because I was upset at the news of a single plane crash).
I really enjoy your reviews, Stuckmann. One of the best on UA-cam. Always well thought out reviews, and I almost always agree with you. Generally spot on. I guess we have the same opinion on most subjects. Congratulations on a job well done.
Thanks for the review, I guess I'll check it out after all. I was really charmed by the atmosphere and imagery given in the trailer, but had a feeling the movie would opt for poop jokes. Even though you confirmed both, at least I know what I'm getting into. I feel it'll still be a fun afternoon flick. Hope you feel better soon, and happy anniversary!
Sounds like a great movie :) Thank you for the review Chris! Get well soon :) We're so glad you were able to go on vacation with your wife for your anniversary! Your Belgium fans Julie and Stijn
Geez, thanks for mentioning Large Marge. I saw Pee-Wes’s big Adventure about 2 years ago and still have nightmares from that scene. And I never look directly at garbage trucks or female garbage truck drivers, especially at night. And my dad doesn’t help by constantly quoting that scene. Thanks dad!
I'm a marketing guy who works for a few local businesses (creating websites etc.) and I was listening to this while using WIX, so I laughed when the sponsor popped up
Eli Roth made a fun, non gory movie. Now I've seen everything

Speaking of kids' horror, you should review Coraline and Monster House. Coraline is one of my favorites.
I need to rewatch coraline. I haven't seen it since it was in theaters and I'm upset I haven't rewatched it yet.
Watching Coraline as I read this huehuehue
Love Coraline, I’m still really creeped out by Monster House. Also corpse bride. I researched it after not seeing it for many years and it is really great
Poop jokes are always painful, but if you're a kid who's on the verge of being scared out of the theatre, it might just be your saving grace
I think those jokes are definitely appropriate for the audience this movie is aimed at and those light moments help the movie from becoming too much for kids to handle. Although my kids would still be creeped out.
Great observation.
i'm not even a kid (a teenager instead, almost 18 actually) but from the cemetery scene onwards i couldn't stop shaking from anxiety, and during the end parts i bursted into tears, the movie at the point was too much for me to handle,, i was thinking of asking my parent if we could leave but i could hardly speak from my anxiety :(

Goddamn. I have no time in the world. I’m so busy that I can’t even live. Yet my stupid, useless, little to no will powered mind decides to watch this lovely video
Congratulations on your anniversary Chris. Stay Blessed and get well soon. ❤from India.
Oh yeah Chris, this was a great movie and would love to see a sequel or series with Vaccaro, Jack Black and Thompson; they all had great chemistry. As I said in my review; I felt it was cross between Harry Potter and Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events! 😁🤙
The movie is based off a book with multiple sequels, would highly recommend
lol, I actually had a "wait, what?" moment during the transformation scene. I was asking myself how he got away with it and kept his PG rating. There was only one family with kids in my theater and as soon as that scene happened they picked up and left.
Review “Mandy”
I just wrote the same thing. Such a special and fun movie!
I reviewed Mandy on my channel, feel free to check it out!
Dustin Hodel best grindhouse movie ever
Mandy was incredible. Definitely has Nicolas cage's best performance in a long time & it's incredibly intense
Yes please review it.
When I was little Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland 2010 scared me. It made me cry with the way Johnny Depp looked.
Good to see Jack Black with a hit finally after such crap.
He had a hit last year with Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle
i’m planning to see with movie with a friend on friday! she’s been talking about wanting to see it for a while and i’m actually kind of a jack black fan, so i’m looking pretty forward to it, especially with this nice review.
Oh God! Only One More Week Until Venom Arrives In Theatres IM SO NERVOUS I do prey it’s good and that Chris will Like It 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Mohd Amerul Aidil SAME! Even if Stuckmann hates it or the critics hate it IM STILL CHECKING IT OUT! Cause maybe I’ll like it 🤷🏻♂️
He won't
TheGreatOnez In my opinion if you want to see venom you should see it if you want to. Who knows maybe it'll be a great film. We'll find out in about two weeks or so.
If you're expecting a critic to align with your taste on every movie, you're viewing it wrong. I say go watch the film first and then compare your views with Chris'
I really loved this movie, Eli Roth needs to do more like these
Are u going to review assassination nation??
Why? It flopped.
Can't wait for that one.
Happy anniversary and we hope you get better soon! I'm going to (hopefully) see this movie this weekend, so I'm super excited that you gave it a good review! :DD
Does that mean the walls are passing time
I do movie reviews too! I would greatly appreciate if you would check me out :)
@@barryjeffrey7545 Applesauce hater
?
No no, passing gas
Yes actually (spoilers)
Happy anniversary to you and your wife and hop you feel better sorry that your sick happy to see your reviews 😊
Found it ok, but the crying scenes were SO painful (as in the kids bad acting)
Xialite Really?? I thought he did really well! Even though the crying was over the top, it still felt like he was deeply hurt and had emotion behind it. I’ve seen worse, I think the bully was super cringey myself but I loved the actor for Lewis!
Get well soon, man! Thanks for making this review.
Happy Anniversary!
Aw, Happy Anniversary man! Congrats!
Review assassination nation, hell fest, night school and smallfoot. But get better soon
Jose andres Estrada vaca night school is out?
Mohammed AL Shamsi no on Thursday
Hope you feel better and happy anniversary to you and your wife!
I feel like you're talking about a completely different movie. I saw it last night and my two cents are: what a mess! Amazing sets though :)
your description near the beginning reminded me of the old Wizard of OZ movie where the walls have faces and are afraid of eggs, that movie until today 25 or so years later, is the one I consider the scariest movie I've seen
Good. Kids need to be disturbed at times. Toughen them up. lol
Agreed
wasn't even that disturbing. I watched poltergeist and nightmare on elm street as a really little kid. this is nothing compared to that
Congrats on your anniversary Chris!!
Make a hiloracity review about Godzilla 1998
I hope you feel better soon, and happy anniversary!
Chris, you should've reviewed The Sisters Brothers.
He didn't even mention that Eric Kripke, Supernatural creator wrote this movie. Wow. You've mentioned screenwriters before. The hell, Chris. Dropping the ball.
Wtf, Eli Roth directed this!? Guess I'm watching it then.
I'm sorry you're feeling sick that sucks. YOU ARE THE ONLY MOVIE REVIEWER I WATCH. I DONT KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO WITHOUT YOU. YOU ARE SO ACCURATE. I LOVE YOU 😍❤🤩
Review School of Rock man that’s Jack Blacks Magnum Opus. Nothing beats “what do they have.” “ stickittotheman- neosis
School of Rock is the first movie my husband and I saw together in the theater. I will love it forever.
The movies that stuck with me the most as a kid were the ones that scared me. The Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story, The Secret of Nimh, and The Land Before Time to name a few. I didn't see any of these films again until I was an adult, and I remembered nearly every frame of each.
Review Requiem for a Dream
BAT ASS I think he did
@@GigglesDaDevil no he didn't
Another great review. It was nice meeting you and your wife at my job at three broomsticks hope you had a great vacation.
Nice video :)
Great video and I know a while back you said you wanted to make a theatre for people who don’t want to be disturbed and seriously we need one. I saw the nun a while back (not a good movie) but the experience was terrible. We need Stuckmann theatres across the US.
I saw it and thought it was safe bore of a flick. Kid actor sucked.
Happy anniversary!!!!!
Oops. This isn't the Dancing Queen music video.
ALLAH AKBAR!
**BOOM**
You are lying.
I was expecting Walk the Dinosaur.
all this coming from a fidget spinner?
I really enjoy your reviews, Stuckmann. One of the best on UA-cam. Always well thought out reviews, and I almost always agree with you. Generally spot on. I guess we have the same opinion on most subjects. Congratulations on a job well done.
Mandy review when?
Since it was Eli Roth I was unsure about even seeing the film in theaters or on dvd but based on your review I’m interested now.
Just so you know, if it's an Amblin film, it's guaranteed to be PG
Saving Private Ryan is Amblin. So is Schindlers List. And Munich. All Rated R, so?
@@jonahthejedai4973 and that was basically it. Most of the majority is PG
-hope you had a great anniversary and get better soon, good review :)
Hmm. Maybe it's best you don't review a movie when you're sink since your judgement gets somewhat impaired. Remember The Amazing Spiderman 2?
It was nice meeting you in person at Hogsmeade at Universal Studios!
Happy Anniversary Chris!
Happy anniversary Chris!
Ah dude, hope you clear up good and well very soon! Appreciate the review regardless of feeling under the weather!
I just watched it last night and i love the little boy his screams were so legit. I don’t usually like child actors but he was pretty good
Sounds like a great movie :) Thank you for the review Chris!
Thanks dad!
I'm glad to hear your take on this movie. I loved the book as a kid and it had a similar formative effect on me, can't wait to see it!
I still can't believe this is directed by Eli Roth. I'm glad he is branching out.
I had NO fucking idea that Eli Roth was even involved in this! Good to see him do something different.
I'm a marketing guy who works for a few local businesses (creating websites etc.) and I was listening to this while using WIX, so I laughed when the sponsor popped up
HAPPY anniversary chris
