    Sorry about the smoke alarm. Bastard thing, I've changed the battery now 😂

      That's alright about the smoke alarm. I met a good friend through a junk telephone. I tied it in it's own cord and took it out to the drive and gave it a good bash.
      My nighbor across the way thought it was hilarious. Years later walking by the place I found one of the plastic buttons laying in the drive. Good times

      I thought it was my bastard smoke detector! 😂 Great restoration of that coin sir. I might try that on my 1830 US seated dime. Thanks for the tips on how to do it!

      @@johndelamontaigne7711 word of warning, this process should not be attempted with any coin that isn't either gold or silver. Thanks for watching 👍

    Thank you so much, very interesting and concisely filmed. All I've got to do now is to find a hammered coin!

    Really interesting video! Could you advise what the honeycomb type heat proof material is that used to hold the pins for your the "stand"? Just a couple of comments on the process you already probably know, but others may not...Firstly, at the final stage of straightening, instead of hammering, you can squeeze the coin between two pieces of wood in a vice. I like this method as it's very controllable and less "shocking" to the coin. Secondly, for folks you don't have access to Liver of Sulphur, you can use a hard boiled egg...Hard boil an egg, she'll it, then mash it up inside a smallish ziplock bag, then pop the coin inside, and wait....Move the coin around periodically, and check the colour....it should take between 10 to 15 minutes...Once it's the right colour, rinse off in distilled water, and carry on as per the video. In both methods, it's the presence of the sulphur compounds that causes the silver to re tarnish....

    Nicely done. Always great when the hammered coins come out of the ground. Not had gold yet. Best wishes to you and your channel. New subscriber.

    What would be the method of unbending modern 80% or 90% silver coins? I have a box of bent ones. Also would a wooden rolling pin be useful inbthe final flatenning ohase? Ie. To flatten without sqyashing the raised details of the coin?

    • @kellickforge
      @kellickforge  11 місяців тому

      Yes it should work with modern silver coins although be a bit harder to do due to the thickness of them. No I wouldn't recommend a rolling pin, the two flat surfaces are essential to get the coin flat, a rolling ping would just leave the coin with a curved bend.

      To restore the patina I use a chemical called Liver Of Sulphur, it can be purchased online.
