When asked about the ending of Whiplash (via Slashfilm), director Damien Chazelle admitted that the moment of recognition and connection in the final moments was a fleeting one between Fletcher and Neiman. He also had a dark thought about where the story goes from there, suggesting that "Andrew will be a sad, empty shell of a person and will die in his 30s of a drug overdose."
