Develop Pinpoint Precision - HOW you hit matters... WHERE you hit matters MORE!

  • One of the keys to winning more matches is switching from the mentality of HOW you hit the ball to WHERE you hit the ball.
    Yes, HOW you hit matters.
But WHERE you hit matters more.
Let's say we have 2 players... call them player A and player B.
They are similarly skilled in terms of technique and are equally fit.
Player A hits every ball HARD... with good technique. But hits every ball down the center of the court, waist high for player B to hit.
Player B, on the other hand, moves player A side to side, up and back... and can hit the ball on a dime.
Who do you think would win this match?
This is why counterpunchers are so effective. They can strategically re-direct shots into spots on the court that cause problems for their opponents.
So HOW do you develop pinpoint precision, and the ability to hit the ball ANYWHERE on command?
    Simple.
Train in the alley. By training in the alley, we develop the skill to be able to hit the ball SOLID, and STRAIGHT. The Fundamental skill of ball striking.
We can practice different spins and stances later... but first thing's first.
Once you have this skill, we can "take the alley with us" and hit into that "imaginary" alley, when we are hitting cross court... hitting a serve out wide... or any other shot.

01:50 With this alley drill, you are standing on the inside doubles line and hitting into the alley.
And then mention training a cross-court forehand with this alley drill..
But if you want to train a "cross-court forehand" with the alley drill, shouldn't you stand at the *outside* doubles line and try to hit the inside doubles line? That way, you would then be hitting a "cross-court forehand", but on a small scale within the 4.5 feet doubles alley...But if you stand at the inside doubles line and aim at the opposite inside doubles, the shot is going perfectly straight and you are not training cross-court.
Am I understanding this drill correctly? 🤔

Raul, great question. The answer is yes and no. You’re training the target mind. And the ability to hit targets. We’ll be exploring this concept a lot more in the near future

@@winningtennis4914 Great. Thanks. I am going to try this alley target drill:
      (1) I will stand at the outside alley line and try to hit the inside alley line. This will train my cross-court forehand.
      (2) I will stand at the inside alley line and try to hit the inside alley line. This will train my down-the-line forehand.
*Hope I'm doing this drill correctly...* 🎾
