Cervelo Caledonia 5 first look: Where road bikes are headed
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 лип 2020
- In what’s effectively the fruit of adultery from the S5 aero sprinter and the Aspero gravel racer, the new Caledonia 5 sits in a surprisingly uncrowded market segment. It’s a bike for those who are forever trying to stuff the biggest tyre possible into their race machine or turn their gravel race bike into a roadster.
Put another way, the Caledonia 5 is racier than the vast majority of endurance road bikes out there, and it’s more versatile in function and fit than dedicated performance machines. Its closest rivals are arguably the BMC Roadmachine, the 3T Strada DUE, and maybe the latest Specialized Roubaix, and yet, Cervelo has seemingly crammed more performance and more spacious room for at least 34 mm rubber into its new cobble conquering offer.

Took delivery 5 days ago of this identical bike. Caledonia 5 with Red Etap. Finally made it out this morning for first “shakedown” ride. For 10 miles it was unbelievably smooth and surprisingly responsive in the hills. I say surprisingly because it’s intent is not really as a climbing bike. But when my cadence started to fall and I needed another gear it took off. That I have never experienced in any of my road bikes, Tarmac S-Works, Venge Pro, Cannondale Synapse. After10 miles things went wrong as the seat post started to slip and no matter what I did every 2 miles I had to stop and reset. All good now with some Fiber Grip but the ride was all about making it back home. Can’t wait to get it out again. As far as visually, it’s beautiful.
I have the same bike. Very happy with it after 7 months. It's a very 'racey' bike, surprisingly aero.
Great review Caley.
Great video, thanks. Bike looks amazing
Nice bike, excellent review!
Aspero lite gotta love the tire clearance!
Nice. At some point we need a complete list (plus Cycling Tips tests!) of 2021 endurance road bikes with ~35c or greater tire clearance. Giant Defy, Trek Domane, Canyon, who else? These types of bikes are on my list to replace my gravel bike in the "one-bike, two wheelsets" genre.
This is exactly what I was looking for. I ordered one today.
How do you like it so far? Considering getting one.
@@nickruffini5405 hi. I ended up buying a Wilier as it was available in just two weeks back then. The same bike shop also sells the Cervelo, but, it was an eight to ten month wait.
Note: You've got the stack and reach for a 54cm frame in the video, not the 56cm frame
Everyone running Sram for their demo these days where's the love for the 105 gank
105 GAAAANG
Sram to impress, 105 to get the job done.
Wireless means less time spent wiring and sent out to reviewers
The problem with these integrated cockpits is just that. They are totally fixed and you lose the adjustment of the traditional setup. Traditional setup on it's own may be a fractional difference in wattage increase but the reduction of the overall system drag (from the rider) is much bigger.
Hey Sanjeev Varah - where’s your fake qualifications at? You got exposed on 4chan
durianrider still trying to be relevant?
Two small corrections. One, these bars aren't fixed. Two, most integrated cockpits (including this one) offer significant adjustability. They have their downsides, but fit is not one of them.
Don’t care for the bike, but I like the review you guys did 👍
A true breakthrough would be a circular, concentric, and parallel bottom bracket she'll with decent bore tolerances.
Found the Hambini fan 😂
Fede Arbelaez put in a good word for the headset too, please
Nice rig!
Very pretty bike. i really like the idea of bikes with more reasonable (for your average human) geo figures fitting wide tyres and looking aero and fast. Not least cause i got crazy legs and need a taller fit anyhoos!
Per the charts, it’s a 2015 Spec Roubaix Disc without the zertz
Great product! I recommend
When you do a full review can you check the roundness and concentricity of the BB please? If these aren’t right the rest doesn’t matter.
Integrated cockpits of the '20's = the integrated seatmasts of the '00's
When is the full review coming?
I have an R2 and an Open UP and I was thinking to get a new bike with more modern features than my R2; this actually looks interesting, in particular when thinking about bad British roads.
Jannik M. Meissner same boat here. Since I’ve gotten the Open UP I’ve been wishing my R3 had 28mm tires. The Open MIND and Cervelo Caledonia might fit that bill. Still waiting on Shimano to drop 12-speed road before I upgrade 😄
Looks ace
$9.5k for Ultegra Di2. Wtf has happened with bike prices?
COVID hurting your dental practice, Fred?
@@WtfUA-cam_YouSuck get a hobby.
It's only the high-end stuff that's getting ridiculous, the $500-2k bikes that most people use keep getting better due to tech trickling down.
This is incorrect. MSRP for Caledonia 5 Ultegra Di2 is $6500 USD.
Kyle Taylor yeah probably talking about AUD
I find it quite attractive, despite me not trusting cervelo. Beautiful design.
cant wait this bike on hambini chanel
I have ridden Cervelo bikes for the past 11 years. I love my current R5 and this may have a fit in my collection for the long rides. I will be curious if this climbs as good as my R5 does.
Nope! Entirely different bike, and way heavier.
Jeez, I'd be pissed if I worked for Cervelo's marketing department. Sure honest informative review. Every time he mentioned a "race bike" or a different style of bike he mentioned Specialized, or Trek. Especially the Venge. Uh... Pretty sure Cervelo invented the aero road bike, maybe compare it to the S5. Keep the SBC talk to when you're reviewing Specialized. Compare it to the bikes in its own market segment when you want to compare it. If you're making geometry comparisons and explaining what it is not, use Cervelos' own product to compare. Jeez...
Really like it. Nice style. Love the integration. I prefer flat bars but other than than it looks great.
Top bar is flat vs ovalized
Ok thank you.
Look similar to Cannondale supersix Evo Hi mode.. I wonder which is better
Clearance seems to fit 36 non knobby, interesting bike.
Rudi Dwi Hartanto By the looks of the space between the back tire and the seat stay i’d say i would never take a 32mm. Specs say otherwise off course
Good 34 that was quoted is a funny number. Quite a few good tyres come in 35 and 36.
@@ricky7396 prob only take up to 32 and newer wider internal rims will blow tire out to 34ish
Does anyone know if mechanical shift cables can also be hidden as well inside the stem and steerer tube?
oh, and 378/555 mm are figures for the 54 size.
But, wait a minute: cervelo has finally recognized that different sizes need to have different seat tube angles?! incredible
Thank you for calling it what it is. An endurance bike. This is simply their competitor to the Giant Defy, Specialized Roubaix, etc. Now the question is when will the R series get the long overdue update with integrated cables etc?
Still not getting it even when paired down, thus I opted for the Cal5
That's a lot of setback on that seatpost, enough that someone who likes a long and low setup still has the saddle slammed forward past the safety limit. Is there an optional zero setback or shorter setback?
No, thats why I got the regular Caledonia as it uses a normal 27.2
hi im a noob here, what's a setback?
@@lakeweed3463 Setback is the amount your seatpost is raked back from zero. A straight seatpost is zero setback, a typical seatpost has about 20mm of setback.
@@echtogammut im guessing the thought is if you want to have long and low setup, an endurance bike like caledonia may not be the right bike for you
That’s actually super pretty
Any updates on testing this bike out?
Looks amazing and pretty sure will ride as so. In defense of Cervelo, I've had 5 Cervelos R series in the past 10 years and never..... and I mean NEVER had an issue with their BBs. They really get a bad rep and that is very sad. Excellent manufacturing, outstanding quality and they deliver what they say they do on the spec sheet. Bikes are meant to be taken care of and most importantly to be put together by a good mechanic. If you do so, you won't have any issues with it. Starting to get the feel for longer and longer rides with age. This bike looks as it it will fit the bill.
Same here, 7 year old P2, still going strong
11 year old R3 here, also still going strong.
Looks very "RoadMachine" like - especially the cockpit. And I'm confused, how does having external brake lines make it less likely to kink a brake hose if you take the bars off to pack for a trip?
Is it unusual that the thru axle on the front wheel comes in from the right instead of the left?
Its how cervelo does it, i own the Cal5 and Aspero and both are setup the same
Focus uses the same concept on the Paralane for years (ok, without the total integration of cables).
The bike looks amazing,
56 frame, what is your height?
why did jumbo visma ride the Soloist this year at Parix-Roubaix rather than the Caledonia?
Very nice bike, similar to the tarmac sl7
Does the lowest priced version’s model have tubeless ready wheels?
Looks to me like a follow up of the C series but the Caledonia 5 frame seems slightly heavier than C5 and probably more expensive, so if someone has a 54cm C5 to sell I am interested.
Hi, for an Ironman I hesitate a lot between Van Rysel EDR 920 Ultegra and a Cervelo Caledonia 105.
Would you have a preference for one of the two bikes?
The course is slightly mountainous (1600m d+).
I need this in my life. Time to sell my S3... and probably a car.
What biggest difference between. This and aspero?
Seems like a bike to break ultra records.
You know what? That is a stunning looking bike.
Someday I can have you Cervelo
All right .... this is my new favorite bike.
What does it weigh?
Looks a lot like my 2019 Giant Defy Advanced Pro 0, but with a much better looking stem.
Why is the position of the bars/drops that much different in the non race version? The race version looks like you can get in the drops and stay there, nice wide platform for palms. What's up with the rotated up look on the non-race version?
The photos of the non-5 frame (the regular version) come from Cervelo. They just set it up differently than we set up our test bike. You could rotate the bars down if you want.
@@VeloVeloVeloTV Of course you can, except that I was under the impression the hoods come mounted to the bars out of the box. If you rotated the bar down they would be all out of position. Just a weird hood angle to come shipped with. maybe it's angle. thanks for a good review.
Looks outstanding on paper, but Cervelo's stubborn adherence to poorly engineered bottom brackets and absurdly sloppy manufacturing tolerences means I'll never give them any serious consideration, beyond some drool on my screen.
@@durianriders are u cool Durian? Sounds like you're a little low on sugar :-)

Where is cervelo manufactured?
Where do "Old" bikes go once the Journos Finish with them?
Back to the company that sent them to us, and then often sold to employees.
Nice graphics for the measurements.
What size tires

Just the tips
I think I can fit up to 32c tires on my canyon ultimate cf slx
Alex Sanzeni if it has an official clearance of 34mm, that means that there is clearance of 6mm in every direction. So you can ride a 37 on this no Problem.
No you cannot. 28mm max.
@@bluemystic7501 do you mean officially cannot or physically cannot?
oh, cf slx DISC
@@AlexSanzeni Are you sure there is enough clearance behind the bottom bracket?
Is this the replacement for C series?
Yes. C line has been retired.
Looks a lot better than the C series
I bet you £10.00 the bike will be fitted with the X35 Ebikemotion in the very near future. Not sure? Have a look at the Ribble Endurance Sle and Wilier Cento1.
What's your height?
their website says it's named after the Latin word for Scotland ?
Beautiful bike. Looks similar to the Asperó.
Came here to look for the hambini fanboys comments.
@@durianriders Norvegan has proven that you're a predator
Why are you comparing this to the Venge all the time? Wouldn’t it make sense to compare it to a classic race bike?
The Venge and the Tarmac have the same geometry. It is a classic race bike, when we're talking geometry.
Cool....
😍
Cervelo makes my dream bike, an S3, but I am digging this one.....But until I am a millionaire, they're going to have to wait.
It's a Giant Defy..........
I was just saying it looks exactly like my Giant Advanced 2. Frame, seat tube, bars, forks, almost everything.
"The New Caledonia". LOL. Can you be more Pacific?
Has anyone bought one of these yet? Looking for some real life opinion.
Yes, great bike. Comfortable but still great for fast rides with aero attributes. I am not a fan of disc brakes which add a full pound to the bike, but we're all screwed with disc brakes on road bikes.
Bikes around 3000 Euros
alabama slamma....
endurance bike but with an aero bar??? well count me in.
And girls on those are girls I should pickups
Integrated cockpit...another bike I won’t be buying.
Style trumps bike fit at the higher end these days. Down the line forget subtle mm perfect reach adjustment and there’s minimal stack height tinkering available also.
Shame though because the trend towards wider tyre clearances is a huge tick.
Uhm he mentioned the second model of this frame doesn't come with integrated wiring, so...
81caasi
Their top end models have integration. I’ll give it to Cervelo, they have more options than most. Unfortunately integration has become somewhat of a cancer in current bike design. Look at the Grail lineup....if you’re satisfied with a non carbon, non Di2 option go your hardest, otherwise look elsewhere.
$$$?
You do realize you are the only person on UA-cam using a hand held microphone right?
We kick it old school.
@@VeloVeloVeloTV I enjoy the handheld mic look. Makes Mr. Fretz look authoritative and like he knows what he is talking about.
Why would they move their offices to the state with one of the highest tax rates!?!?!
Perhaps there is more to California than high tax rates
As a dentist, I will consider this.
Nice bike, but way to expensive!
TYRE CLEARANCE FOR tHE WIN!!!
The bike seems pretty boring... I recall their C-series being a flop. Going to go on a limb and say this one is as well...
It was a flop because Cervelo aren't renowned for their endurance bikes, and of course the insane pricing didn't help at all. However, I managed to buy a new one when the bike shop had a clearance (since no one was buying them). A Cervelo C5 Dura-Ace with disc brakes for 3200aud! 😍 It rides so well and it is my first 'expensive' bike - I've been counting my lucky stars every day since... The only thing I don't like about it is the Fizik Antares Versus saddle, which can obviously be swapped out for your own favourite saddle.
It would be great if the cycling media would just once review a bike the majority of people can actually afford. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing these reviews, but they are useless for most people.
We hear you. They always send us the high-end stuff for these new bike launches. Check out the rest of our channel though. We've reviewed quite a lot of more affordable bikes. There are four gravel bikes under $2,000 from our last Field Test, for example.
i'll go with scott addict than caledonia. best value
Hello Hambini fans!
Cervelo sucks. Crappy build quality and tolerances and stupid 73 seat tube angle geometry on all bike sizes---makes not sense at all--smaller bikes need steeper seat tube angles.
Looks sick, fantastic name but until im Jeff Bezos gay lover I couldn't justify a Cervelo at the spec I'd want.
They whiffed at the chance to make this a much better bike by using a threaded BB standard.
Disappointing. A gap filler bike with only a small gap to fill. Cervelo - you are worthy of so much more, and Cyclingtips, you should have let James Huang review this - I doubt he would have 'compensated' quite so much.
This is very much not a review. Keep an eye out for that later on.
It is a shame that disc brakes ruined the look and the aerodynamic of the bicycles. 😞 The biggest marketing scam in the history of bicycles.
Please review rim brakes bicycles.
