    A couple of tips to make the leaves turn fully yellow/brown while hanging:
    -Don't fertilize after mid-July, some of the old guides I've read suggested that fertilizing too late in the season keeps the leaves green permanently. In these guides mid-July appeared as the absolute latest point at which any fertilizer should be used, I stop fertilizing around midsummer and have had nicely cured leaves with plenty of nicotine (in northern Finland)
    -Wait for the leaves to start turning yellow until harvesting, picking the bottom leaves first. They should start maturing easier if you follow the previous step.
    -Hang them outside under an outdoors canopy, this way the air circulates (preventing mould) while still letting some indirect sun on them (curing them but not too much). The moisture difference between night/day might also play a part in this, at least it prevents the leaves from drying too soon. If it's really damp and cold though (like it is for the last leaves) you shouldn't leave them hanging for more than 1-2 weeks because of the mould risk.

    I pick it green all the time , tie it in bunches and hang it upside down in 1 of my sheds till yellow / brown then heat cure it , rehydrate it with sugar water and shred it . tastes great . some times I will then put some in a mason jar and put it in the steamer for 4-6 hours to get a more cavendish style tobacco. Heat curing after color curing helps caramelize the natural sugars in the leaf , making for a sweeter tasting smoke and takes away the harshness too

      So after drying and browning rehydrate with sugar water do you stick in a steamer with sugar water maybe speed up the process

    Best way to get rid of snails and slugs. Put half a jar of beer in random places. They love it so much they will do anything to get it. They get drunk on it and fall in it and drowned. I had loads of slugs and put about 6 half full jars of beer down. In 2 days every jar was full of dead slugs and snails.

    Also the reason why they dried green , was because you harvested the leaves too early... when the leaves start to turn yellow and almost cure on the plant , then you pick and hang the leaves up... you picked all those leaves and they were dark green... you interrupted the process of letting the chlorophyll , natural start to fade out of the leaves , and hence , the leaves would of turned yellow , and then would go golden brown/dark brown
    ..
    so you harvested them prematurely... and also the cutting of the stems on the leaves ???.... not supposed to do that too... as again your interrupting the natural curing/fermentation, it needs to juice in those stems , on the leaves .. to do its work , and dry naturally.
    Sad to see all that go to waste. Hope you take my advice and try again. watch Larry Hall's videos on Growing and Harvesting tobacco. I grow Tobacco aswell. Its a shame because your plants looked nice and healthy etc...
    Sam.

      even at that he could have salvaged the crop by allowing those green leaves to cure and ferment in a pilon. this does of course have to be done before the drying process.... and the oils and nasty harsh chemicals break down, including the chlorophyll. I have a vid about a very small scale version of this i did in a paper towel and actually the finished product is not at all that bad. :( really sucks. wish they had done more research.

      Yes, the flowers are really beautiful. But if you only let one or two plants flower you will see the difference in leaf quality. The one without flowers gets bigger leaves. If you let one set flowers you have seeds for the next season.

    I grow a variety of tobacco(LA Perique) which never yellows on the plant. They did cure well in stacks. It’s Feb. (Louisiana), they’re almost a year old. The plants never quit flowering. The bees are on them now. The Burley I grew (Ky21) yellowed on the stalk and cured beautifully with no issues. Good video.

    I'm in the UK - I harvest my leaves green; there's not the heat and the sun here for them to ripen yellow on the plant. I think your leaves dried out too quickly once you harvested them. I take the green leaves and hang each one individually with a paperclip. If they dry out slowly enough they still do turn yellow and then brown. I think your leaves dried too quickly before the changes could take place! :) Don't bind leaves together, hang them individually!! Just my opinion!!

  • @brandondarrin1408
    @brandondarrin1408 7 років тому +10

    You did so well then harvested premature. :( You wanna cut most of the flowers off the top save a few big ones for next seasons seeds, then wait for them to be yellow moist and almost browning. Once harvested hang in a more humid area where not so dry. You'll get it next time. My first time I tried taking my sprouts outside in 90 degree sunny weather and burned them up. Now got new sprouts and it's almost August.

  • @TheFredkent

    It is NOT necessary to wait for your leaves to turn yellow or brown on the plant , possibly desireable but not set in concrete .The commercial growers don't work that way (especially when the conditions are not favorable for the tobacco) and so when the decision is made to harvest many acres of tobacco they harvest the lot regardless of color. They do this because they know that when the leaves are taken from the fields and placed into their heated fermenters ALL leaves turn Brown in a few days anyway. This method is good for most virginia varieties used for cigarettes. The heated fermenter sheds remove the ammonia from the leaves and color the leaves brown. Futher darkening is usually the result of keeping the tobacco in a sealed dry environment after fermentation . Anyone can make their own fermenter using any old retired Fridge or vertical freezer with a crockpot in the bottom as the heat source. 42 days at 50 C will cure most tobacco to give a very pleasant sweet smelling , ammonia free smoke that doesn't burn your throat or give you a cough or send your head into a spin.

    Let the leaves turn gold with almost no green at all left on the leaf. I harvested some of my leaves at pale yellow with the edges of the leaves already brown. You want the plant to be green up until a certain age then stop fertilizalizing it and allow it to start going pale green to yellow. I stack the leaves in a pile of 30 stem to stem in pairs with the leaves facing out and place the stack wrapped in a bath towel. Every so many hours i take the leaves out and wave them air them out in small spread stacks of 7 and shuffle and spread them let them sit in piles in the open air for 15 -30 minutes than put them in one stack again and wrap them back in a towel. I leave them in the towel from 2 to 4 to 8 hours and air them out in intervals.

  • @cjudith465
    @cjudith465 8 років тому +4

    Have you tried wrapping them in towels and leaving them in a warm place, turning each pile twice a day for 3-4 days? This technique helps to yellow the leave before hanging ( 'twas something I saw on a UA-cam video) and is quite effective!! I am just a novice like yourself, this being my first harvest, I have tried a fair few different methods and this one was by far the most effective.

    • @creatinkercom
      @creatinkercom  8 років тому +1

      Yes, I tried that last season without success. This season I grow other types where Burley is one that started to turn yellow first. Due to the climate where I live I started the seeds six weeks earlier this season so the plants has more time to mature. I have read on other forums that green tobacco leaves is a problem also for experienced growers, not just me.
      If the leaves is near yellowing I think the piling method will work. But if they are to far off, they just dry green or get mold in the process.

    keep at it, this happened to me the first time. What i got wrong is that i didnt let the leaves yellow completely on the plant before i picked them. it was very disheartening to see all of that time spent wasted. Second season I did way better 80% of everything grew. What i did different is I picked bottom ones that yellowed first then I waited 2 weeks for the top ones the yellow before I pick also got a dehumidifier to prevent the mold =) hope this helps

    If you cut the flower off you tend to get bigger leaves as the plant uses energy to grow them instead of the flower. You’ll always get a greater quantity of tobacco that way. Also you harvested them way to early bro, need to wait till they start to turn golden.

    Hi, thanks for sharing. Now july 2019 but it might assist some. In uk, west mids, my 1st attempt at growing baccy. Phenominal results so far. Growing at allotment, in greenhouse and in raised bed at home. Greenhouse lost 2 huge plants, allotment lost 2 plants, raised bed lost one plant.No yellowing so far in greenhouse, 7 feet tall, all green, allotment,3 to 4 feet tall, nice harvests, raised bed, great harvests,put a roof over raised bed after huge amounts of rain,,,plastic sheets for free, good step, all thriving with air and heat but no rain,but obviously have to water. shoe box full of dried baccy so far,,,,,so i think around 2 percent of potential end product. Burley and virginia,,,,,,,,,,,turkish variety all failed,but 3 plants growing after another sowing. Oh, leaves of green plants over 30 inches,,,,,,,if they yellow!!!! I don't think baccy is meant to grow in greenhouses? From my meagre findings. Outside protected and staked,from winds seems to be my findings. I am amazed at their characteristics.. Interested to speak to other growers at home.

      Hello Terry
      I have not grown any tobacco for some years. But next season I think of giving it a try again. But for my last try, the tobacco outside the greenhouse did grow better than those inside the greenhouse. I will probably try your method with a raised bed. That and quick-growing tobacco I think will do the trick.

    the problem is twofold. as suggested by most people you picked too early. secondly you should never use a fan to dry the leaves. the leaves must cure not dry. keep them moist and at a higher temperature than room temperature... put a panel heater and a humidifier in the room and try keep some basic air flow not a gale force wind or fan. hope 2016 was better...

    • @creatinkercom
      @creatinkercom  5 років тому +1

      And I should have used a type that has a faster grow cycle. I did try the humidifier but then I got mold on the leaves. Only the one that got yellow before I picked them was ok in the end. But if you don't try, you don't learn anything.

And what's with brushing the leaves? I use to spray the leaves off but don't do that because any bugs or debree will fall off when they dry out.
