    this is “the” sound to me. I know some people have a specific sound they go for, and for clean sounds, this is as good as it gets for me. Love that you can run them into effects and they work really well (being the shoegaze nerd I am). Runs in the family too, I got into them through the basses, casually mentioned them to my dad and he said “oh yeah, i used to have a 330 12 string”. Lost my mind!

    I tip my hat hugely to Peter Buck from R.E.M. I've own a few 360's and one 330 in the past. I do own a 360 Mapleglo that has immense character and chime. Wouldn't truly know what I'd do without it. Great video!

    Glorious classic Ricko tone, Joe. Thank you for sharing quite a labour of love. Congrats. This shows what a difference well thought mods can do to an already fine instrument. We all have a story of a great guitar that we had to sell; don't let this one go!

    I have a color of the year Burgundy 360vp, the sheer amount of clarity I get from the toasters, easily makes it one of my favorite instruments I've ever played. They're bright, yet never harsh, and they sound great with any sort of pedals I run it through. Ricks and compressors toghether are life bringing, but through any sort of gain you get to hear every note, which cannot be said for every guitar. It's also super light, and the neck profile just suits me perfectly, plus I always love the added harmonics of any sort of trapeze style bridges.

    Stock Ric 330 or 360 with hi-gain pick-ups is my preference. The chime is there for days, with the level of brightness / bite controlled by the 5th knob. Nice video. Good to see people still discovering the joy of owning a Rickenbacker guitar.

    Wow! What a great video on the Ric 330. Very informative and extremely interesting. You did a professional job on what you were doing regarding subtle mods. I love the sounds you get. I have always loved Rickenbackers. I have had four of them over the years. I still have my 1990 350 JL commemorative edition. Like John Lennon's but full scale. Jet I also have a beautiful Ric 620 in Mapleglo I love to death! I regret letting go of 2 360's Fireglo. One standard, the other was a slant fret. I have 5 Strats, 1 Tele, a Mustang. I have an assortment of acoustics too. Ibenez, Takemine, a Yamaha 12 string, and my lovely Gibson J185 ec sunburst. Not bragging I too broke! But my Ricky's are the love of my life. They look great, sound great and theyre are built like a battleship.
    Thank you Joe for your video. I enjoyed it so much. Jerry, PA-USA

    I couldn't afford the guitar but I got the scatterwound pickup straight from Rickenbacker. I had it put in my Duo Sonic along with a '55 Tele at the bridge.
    Roger Mcguinn put Tom Petty onto using a 1966 Vox V-806 treble booster. They only ever made the booster for one year so they are impossible to find. I worked with Pedro Garcia of Ananashead in Spain. It took a year to find and get a schematic. We got one sent out to Vox dealers for the repair dept complete with letterhead. The parts list not only has the values but the brandnames of the parts. The short story is I got my booster and Pedro released it as the 'Byrd Song' pedal. At $100.00 USD it's steal and has been a good seller for a few years. Yes all to Ric owners.
    It is not just a great guitar you got ...it is an investment. You get all the enjoyment from it and it's value increases yearly. Christie's views old Rics as fine art. It sounds total killer.

    This is my next project and final guitar frontier. I'm firmly seated in Strat land after decades of fuss and this will hopefully be the perfect complement. I'm obsessed with chintz, chime, twang, etc.
    Your Wreck settings are essentially the same settings I run on AC30s (yes, even taking into consideration Z's backward application of the Cut control) so it should integrate seamlessly.
    Now to sell a bunch of stuff while hunting for the right 330. I had considered a 325, but I am afraid of that scale length.

  • @Glicksman1

    You do, of course, know that Tom Petty and Mike Campbell were/are tremendous Byrds and Beatles worshipers ("fans" does not go far enough). Their sound was primarily based upon those bands. Accordingly, whether you admit it or not, if you like TP and the HBs, you are a Byrds an Beatles fan by proxy.
    I always thought a Rick 360 looked like a 21st-century guitar, but now that we're here, it looks like a 23rd -century guitar. I love my '66 360/12. It's Fireglow, and the vermillion stain has mellowed to a fiery red/orange on the top. It does glow and it's one of the most beautiful looking and sounding guitars I have even seen and played.
    The "toaster" pickups from the '60s are low-output single coils, even though they look to many to be humbuckers with two coils. This, of course is the main source of the Rick sound, all mids to upper mids. The Rick's all-maple body, solid or hollow, imparts a brightness to the sound, acoustically, anyway. But once you've got your amp turned up, the body wood gets less and less important to the sound until it soon makes no difference.
    Rick's low-output pickups (low-output adds more harmonic quality and string/note definition) are super-clear. Hi-fi quality. A Rickenbacker guitar is an acuate mirror of what you're playing. It doesn't cover for you. The upshot of this that the note separation of chords and arpeggios is outstanding, and clarity is there at all times. The Rick sound cuts cleanly through a mix, the audience will hear you clearly (for better or worse) and the strings' harmonics will shine on brightly, quite insane.
    If I had to describe the Rick sound in one word, I'd say, "shimmering". Nothing sounds like a Rick.
    The compromise with the above and, for some, the downside of the Rick low-output pickups is that they produce little sustain, particularly on their 12 string guitars. McGuinn called the unmodified sound of his Rick 360/12 "thuddy".
    So, what to do? Well, McGuinn taught us what to do - Compress the shit out of them (two stacked compressors in series, set moderately), set your high-headroom amp super clean, or straight into the recording desk or P.A. board, and "take some time and learn how to play."

    Very nice sounding mod there Joe. You know… back when everybody started sampling from “‘older” music because “‘they couldn’t get that tone/sound anymore.”, I wondered why somebody who could figure out how to get “that sound.” Now I don’t know if this could be a new business for you (‘or anybody else who’s reading this) but isn’t there a huge desire for achieving that sound again? Considering how popular the jangle is… or any of the best, isn’t that a business opportunity for those who have your kind of knowledge base? The Creamery makes great pickups… but as you said, there are further modifications/parts that are needed. That could be a service someone could get into. :)

    Wow this is exactly the video I was looking for! I got my 330 a couple of years back and I really want to switch to toasters. I’ve also been looking at creamery pickups and I’m curious why you picked the mid 63 over the low 57. From what I’ve gathered online it seems the lower the pickup output, the more it chimes. Amazing stuff!!

    • @JoePerkinsMusic
      @JoePerkinsMusic  Рік тому

      I answered this Q in the August Q&A video yesterday :-) But I went with the Mid '63s as a) my favourite Ricky sounds are those of the 60s, and b) I wanted the low-cut capacitor to have more effect, and the 63s are a touch thicker than the 57s. But from what I've heard, there really isn't much difference between the two sets, sonically.

  • @enricopallazzo8510

    Cool guitar and sounded amazing through the Orange.
    I would love to own a 381v69 (the regular 6 strings, not the 12). I remember seeing in Martin Gore from Depeche Mode playing one in Nashvile one the "101" dvd and always been interested in those guitars.
    I see that a lot of people use the Janglebox compressor with Rickenbaker, such a cool pedal.
    I like the mods you made especially the toggle switch for the capacitor but i would have put a 3 way switch so i can have 3 tones: one bypassed, one the classic capacitor, one with a different value.
    Rickenbaker are always associated with Beatles for a good reason BUT they, at least, seems to be really flexible guitars.
    Oh, i was forgetting to ask you a question: how is the neck? comfortable?

    • @JoePerkinsMusic
      @JoePerkinsMusic  2 роки тому +2

      Yep, the Orange really thickened it out in a great way :-) Would love to get a Janglebox to go with it - believe Analogman do a version of their CompROSSor with a 'RYCK' switch for a similar effect. Neck feels lovely - definitely thinner than most, but not hard to play at all :-)
