  • Harmonic Hatchery Productions presents a trio rendition of the famous Japanese children's song "Shojoji no Tanuki Bayashi" 証城寺の狸囃子 by Shinpei Nakamura and Ujo Noguchi. The song is about a group of tanuki (often translated as "raccoon-dog" but best left untranslated and easily searched using the original term) who often appear to dance and drum on their bellies in the moonlight at Shojoji Temple in the city of Kisarazu in Chiba Prefecture.
The taiko drumming tanuki is Kazuo Ebisuya, a professional taiko drummer from Nagasaki Prefecture. The pianist is Ron Hadley (Vancouver), and the tenor saxophonist is Jim Cameron (Boston). The tanuki mask was created by Yayoi Hirano, a superb mime/dance artist who lives in Vancouver, BC, and the costume was created by Naoko Shimada, also of Vancouver. The video was recorded on November 19, 2010 in the town of Togitsu, just outside of the city of Nagasaki, as another trailer for Ron Hadley's in-progress musical about a man who turns into a tanuki.
